Even for someone as gaffe-prone as U.S. President George W. Bush, he was in rare form on Friday, confusing APEC with OPEC and transforming Australian troops into Austrians.

Bush’s tongue started slipping almost as soon as he started talking at a business forum on the eve of an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Sydney.

“Mr. Prime Minister, thank you for your introduction,” he told Prime Minister John Howard. “Thank you for being such a fine host for the OPEC summit.”

Later in his speech, Bush recounted how Howard had gone to visit “Austrian troops” last year in Iraq. There are, in fact, no Austrian troops there. But Australia has about 1,500 Australian military personnel in and around the country.

Upon finishing his speech, Bush took the wrong way off-stage and, looking slightly perplexed, had to be re-directed by Howard to a centre-stage exit.

Remember – there are ignoramuses who voted for this dork twice!

If by folksy they mean ignorant and by Middle America they mean those rednecks that think a six pack and a bug zapper is a good time then yes I would agree with that.

Gee, if those Aussie Lagers are taking their toll, imagine if Pres. Chucklenuts went to Belgium, and had one of their Tripels!

Dumbasses all over the world have been offended by your remark.

  10. MikeN says:

Oh my, he makes verbal gaffes. By that standard, everyone in 2000 should have voted for Ralph Nader, and then reelected him in 2004. Gore’s greatest hits include not being able to identify Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin, and saying a leopard changes its stripes. Though Bush is a little more incoherent than most.

  17. ‘ Remember – there are ignoramuses who voted for this dork twice! ‘

The fact, as proven by their voting record, that this
‘ dork ‘ actually, not virtually, controls al-Usa’s Senate and Congress is lamentable yet obvious.

Unless, of course, you believe that have done and are doing his bidding by some imagined concept of shear coincidence.

When I was living in Australia I was told how ignorant Yanks are with geography. I was told time and time again from Australians who visited the US that Americans thought Australia was next door to Germany. I didn’t believe it until after 9 years straight in Australia I visited the US for the first time and as I evidently picked up an Aussie accent as I was asked many times where I was from.

I finally said “Australia” once when asked where I was from for the unpteenth time and sure enough this was the reply:

“Oh it must be nice being so close to Germany”.

“Yeah” I said “but keeping the kangaroos out of Munich is a real a problem” 😉

“Oh, I can see that with those autobahns you have”

    Cheers

  19. TIHZ_HO says:

    This just occurred to me.

If Bush does send the air strike planes to Iran I hope he doesn’t send them to Ireland by mistake. 😆

But (Bush) aides say his folksy style has helped endear him to Middle America. That says it all doesn’t it?

    Cheers

Americans just don’t seem have a clue about the world – and even their own country for that matter.

I’ve often thought the U.S. would be more popular with Iraqis if the President ever learned how to pronounce the name of their country.

It’s been four or five years now, an invasion, victory and an occupation and Mr. Bush still can’t pronounce Iraq. You’d think, of all the countries in the world, he’d pronounce the name of at least this one correctly.

    Mr. Bush, it’s not nuke-ooo-lar and it’s not Eye-rack.

  26. iGlobalWarmer says:

Just to fan the flames because its fun: Those who voted for him twice got exactly what they were voting for: An America that’s a better place to be than the mess it would have become under Gore or Kerry.

  27. TIHZ_HO says:

#25 “I’ve often thought the U.S. would be more popular with Iraqis if the President ever learned how to pronounce the name of their country.”

I thought the same way myself.

When I see personal videos taken by soldiers in Iraq posted on the Internet I cringe on how often little regard is given to the local Iraqis. I can’t help but think how would Americans react if the tables were turned around.

Sure its tough and dangerous in Iraq, but when soldiers who are doing searches just show some basic understanding and respect of their culture this would go a long way to strengthen the relationship then give less creditability to Mullahs who cite many reasons to hate Americans.

No one hears what the US is saying because their actions speak much louder than words. In other words just ‘be more Christian’, right?

When I was living in Indonesia (Muslim country) the locals usually very friendly anyway but if you show just a little respect like placing your hand on your heart like a salute when you greet them they really beam and become very warm.

Like everything in life there are more than one side of the story.

    Cheers
