Error in Ark. Law Allows Kids to Marry

A law passed this year allows Arkansans of any age – even infants – to marry if their parents agree, and the governor may have to call a special session to fix the mistake, lawmakers said Friday.

The legislation was intended to establish 18 as the minimum age to marry but also allow pregnant teenagers to marry with parental consent, bill sponsor Rep. Will Bond said. An extraneous “not” in the bill, however, allows anyone who is not pregnant to marry at any age if the parents allow it.

And, the quote of the day:

“You’re either pregnant or you’re not pregnant,” Sen. Dave Bisbee said. “Rarely will that be a typographical error.”

  1. James Hill says:

    Well, it is Arkansas…

  2. TIHZ_HO says:

#1 LOL! Hey, I was going to say that!!

    Cheers!

  3. chuck says:

So a 12-year-old female who is pregnant can marry an adult (hopefully the father of the baby) can marry with the consent of the parent.

But a 12-year-old male, who has knocked up his 38-year-old teacher cannot get married.

  4. Angel H. Wong says:

Does that mean that Arkansa’s Playgirl magazine has girls?

  5. Jägermeister says:

Surreal. Aren’t these people getting paid to actually read through the proposed laws or at least have someone knowledgeable do it for them, before they pass it?

  6. Noname says:

If you really want to piss off dumb ass liberals, just tell them the Military won’t allow these young kids in love to serve.

The liberals to be consistent with all their definitions of family (MAN on MAN, WOMEN on WOMEN) have to accept this variation.

But, they are hypocrites, so they argue against it.

  7. Mister Mustard says:

    >>MAN on MAN, WOMEN on WOMEN

Seems as though you’re protesting a little too vigorously there, Noname.

    Anything we should know about?

  8. doug says:

#6. that’s not even particularly a convincing straw-man argument. show me a ‘liberal’ who advocates the use of child soldiers – there are lots of those in various countries, you know.

I am a ‘liberal’ and I confine my advocacy to allowing marriage for consenting adults.

Interestingly, it is the conservative religious who advocate marriage at young age, which is why one sees frequent divorces among certain denominations.

  9. Cinaedh says:

#6 – Noname – You need to go to school and take a course called ‘Logic and Methodology’.

  10. Gary Marks says:

You’d never guess it from Uncle Dave’s photo, but that young groom used to be a holy terror, totally unfit for marriage. But ever since he got his tonsils out, family and friends say he’s been such a sweet young boy, and he’ll make a fine husband and father. Hooray for Arkansas!

  11. JoaoPT says:

Isn’t it Arkansas where they have the best Wh**ehouses in the business?

Pardon my french but I’m not local and I vaguely remember a funny article about it in a magazine… Not sure it was Arkansas or some other Southern/Westtern state… really…

  12. Angel H. Wong says:

    #11

Arkansas is where Bill Clinton was governor, it figures.

  13. Mr. Fusion says:

The fact there is an error in the wording isn’t unusual nor unique. Many times what the lawmakers want and what is actually written into the bill don’t match and is only caught later.

    #6, Noname,

If you really want to piss off dumb ass liberals, just tell them the Military won’t allow these young kids in love to serve.

Uummm, would you like to rethink that comment?

The military doesn’t discriminate and will take volunteers from any State, Arkansas included. All branches want good recruits. They are tightening up on the delusional psychotic individuals though. Sorry.

  14. Noname says:

    #13 Mr Fusion

What was your crazy excuse for not serving? It amazing, it’s always the liberal hypocrites, the people who never served that have all the self righteous opinions on what the military does and should do.

Are you sure you and George aren’t family? Didn’t Barbra spend time in Canada, about 50 yrs ago?

  15. Mister Mustard says:

    >>What was your crazy excuse for not serving?

    What was yours, Noname?

  16. Cinaedh says:

    #14 – Noname,

You ought not to make uninformed assumptions.

While a few Americans went to Canada during Viet Nam, a few Canadians went to Viet Nam after enlisting in the U.S. Army.

  17. Noname says:

    #15 and #16, Yes please no ass-umption.

#15 Yes I served, and you?

#16 What assumption? Read Mr Fuzions previous postings. You seem to be making the assumption here, why?

  18. Cinaedh says:

    #17 – Noname

What assumption? Read Mr Fuzions previous postings. You seem to be making the assumption here, why?

If you mean I should read his posts in this thread, I did and I don’t know what you’re talking about. I must be a little slow today or maybe you should re-read entry #9.

If you mean I should read all his previous posts in all threads, forget about it! He posts a lot!!!!

  19. Mr. Fusion says:

#14, Sorry nonuts, I did enlist. I was medically discharged for an allergic reaction after a few weeks. And I would do it again if I was younger.

No, I am not a member of the Bush family or even related in any way that I know about. I have no knowledge of Barbara (I assume) Bush being in Canada 50 years ago. It would have been to her benefit to have visited though. Canada is a very beautiful, diverse country.

  20. Ralph the School Bus Driver says:

    Noname,
They are tightening up on the delusional psychotic individuals though. Sorry.

It appears you are living up to Mr Fusion’s comment. Slow down on the meth a little.

  21. Noname says:

    #19 Mr Fusion,

“Medically discharged … after a few weeks”, sounds about right for the Canadian Armed Forces; I was implicitly referring to the USA Armed Forces. In the States we tend to do a better health pre-screens. Just the intelligence test alone would likely have halted the process.

There you go again resorting to name calling (“nonuts”, ooh that hurts coming from you). I know you can’t make your lame arguments any other way.

#20 Sounds like advice from your vast personal experience. However; I would have to disappoint you. I now have a D.A. in the family and I don’t think she would approve. I can only hope your not doing your meth while driving that bus.

You really should seek help; “meth-ing” and typing is also dangerous.
