A newly emerged “fish spa” is becoming fashionable in many hot spring resorts, and has attracted even more customers, all curious about this peculiar treatment.

At such a spa, many Garra Rufa, a type of small tropical fish, also nicknamed Chinchin Yu, nibble fish or simply doctor fish, are put in hot springs. As they can live and swim freely in at least 43-degree-hot [°C] waters, they are naturally used for the treatment of skin diseases in such spas.

When placed in the spa, these fish can feed themselves on the dead cells of the human body, since they only consume such cells, leaving the healthy skin of the human body to grow. The whole process is reportedly free of pain. It won’t hurt and the bather might feel a pleasant tingling on his or her skin.

Sounds fun, as long as no one slips in a few piranha.

I actually did this at a resort called Yunnison on my trip to Japan. They had a little pool that you could stick your feet in. It was fun to listen to people scream!

  2. Phillep says:

    Shave your body first.

I’ve had small bluegill try to pluck leg hairs. Startling and it tickles.

    Old news…but weird for sure…

  4. Misanthropic Scott says:

Great idea!!! Think I’ll wait ’til all of my cells are dead though.

  5. Mac Guy says:

Morbid thought: what happens when you throw a dead body in?

  6. Angel H. Wong says:

Actually there are fish native to such conditions, they live in Turkey and people with Psoriasis go to those spas to get some relief.

  7. Mike says:

This certainly isn’t new by any means. At least 15 years ago I saw such a health spa on a science show (now canceled) called Quantum on Australian TV.

    Angel you medical bastard!

  9. tallwookie says:

  13. Simon says:

baby Sharks can get some practice here, teething so to speak.

  14. John says:

Meh, go into any lake where there are minnows and they’ll do the same thing.

I notice that the girl in the picture has her legs very tightly closed. She may be missing out on the full benefits of the icthyo-exfoliation process.

I doubt she wants a stronger fish like smell down there.

Oh yes, this actually work. I’ve known a friend of mine who had some kind of skin disease (not sure what the disease was called) and one of his friends suggested this; and it actually worked she said.
