Red Orbit – August 12, 2007:

Little T.J. was a monster. There’s no other way to say it.

Extremely hyperactive, the toddler ran around in circles, destroying everything in his path. He choked the cat and dragged it by its tail. He bit the teacher and hit other kids. He got kicked out of day care and banned from friends’ homes.

His own grandmother called the 2-year-old a “monster.” Friends told his family that T.J. _ short for Terence Johnson _ was destined to be “the next serial killer.”

Today, as T.J. gets ready to turn 3, he is a changed boy. Lively, to be sure, but affectionate instead of mean and aggressive.

“It’s a total turnaround _ this is a different child,” his mother said. “He’s a normal, active toddler now. He responds to punishment for the first time. He gives us hugs. He says, ‘I love you.’ He’s learning to share. Everybody notices the difference.”

A frontal lobotomy? Electroshock therapy? Powerful drugs? No.

T.J. had his tonsils out.

As medical studies are beginning to confirm, the removal of a child’s tonsils can, in some cases, significantly improve, even cure, severe hyperactivity often diagnosed as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD.

  1. jlm says:

the only “cure” for this is better parenting.

  2. Undissembled says:

So did he get better cause he wasn’t allowed to have sugar after the surgery?

  3. Jerk-Face says:

Heck, wouldn’t having any major surgery calm a kid down, at least temporarily?!

  4. V says:

Severe physical discomfort (hunger, dehydration, exhaustion, etc) makes people irritable. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if swollen tonsils could drive a little kid to that kind of behavior.

But that’s not ADHD as we typically think of it, and labeling it as such is the equivalent of designating a complicated and hard-to-treat syndrome to describe “ear pain” when the real problem is an infection.

  5. Mr. Fusion says:

    #1, jim,

Ya don’t have any kids, do you?

  6. edwinrogers says:

Cause and effect. The kid snored, they removed tonsils. Bonus, the kid sleeps better and is a nicer person. My own experiences concur, nose broken three times, at 46 my doctor recommended surgery to remove the junk – for the first time in 40 years I can smell and taste, sleep a whole night, blow my nose, breath with my mouth shut. It’s great. Anyone with unspecified irritability with ear, nose or throat congestion will benefit from visiting a good otolaryngologist.

  7. igor says:

i bet if u circumsize him and tell him next step is castration he’d behave too ^^

ADHD is a fabricated disorder diagnosed when a patient shows various “symptoms” which are actually behavior patters.

The function of tonsils and adenoids in the human immune system isn’t fully understood. Our “advanced” Western medical practitioners aren’t infallible. This reminds me of the medical practice of trepanation (drilling holes in the patients skull) which was used to treat insanity and demonic possesion by accredited western doctors not so long ago.

Correlation doesn’t show cause. Tonsilectomy for ADHD is akin to amputating a foot to treat an ingrown toenail. Sure it works… but at what cost.

  9. JoaoPT says:

    Hear hear..
Fortunately my kid is a sleeper… He’s difficult to get to bed, but impossible to wake up in the morning (except Saturdays…).
And also I can see the different behavior pattern in the holidays, he goes to bed later and becomes an impossible prick…

Come to think of it, I have a colleague at my company. He is a bit obese, and he’s got, obviously, sleep apnea. He’s the nicest of fellows, but grumpy in the morning and slow as hell all day long. He continually ignores our advices to seek help.
Sleep disorders are one of the most influential “modern” diseases that nobody talks about.

  10. joshua says:

#9…..having a tonsilectomy is hardly akin to amputating a foot……
and trepanation was done in Egypt about 3500 years ago…..though some HMO’s still recommend it.

  11. Angel H. Wong says:

Sleep disorder? that’s that those pastel coloured sleeping pills are for.

  12. ArianeB says:

“ADHD is a fabricated disorder diagnosed when a patient shows various “symptoms” which are actually behavior patters.”

As a former teacher, I can assure you this statement is false. ADHD is a very real disease, though often misdiagnosed / overdiagnosed in many cases.

  13. BIG RICH says:

The medication is probably still in his system also hes on a restricted diet…
    Food is corelatated with ADHD
Why is so bad when a child is agressive?
People that Are agressive are winners.

  14. bill says:

He could be President of the US some day!

  15. Mike says:

What the hell do this kid’s parents think. Hes turning 3 for christs sake, any parent how stupid they are (except these jerks it would seem) know that the 2-3 period is going to be bad.
Its not called the Terrible Twos for no reason!!

  16. tkane says:

A little suffering is good for the soul.

A lot of suffering is called parenthood.

  17. OvenMaster says:

The resemblance of that kid to Bat Boy is remarkable.

  18. MrSilicon says:

    #1: Please, don’t even

Nothing like watching you own flesh and blood *STOP BREATHING* while he sleeps. Get the tonsilectomy/adnoidectomy. Nevermind the risks, you, and most importantly you will sleep better.

Who will ever know if ADHD is either real or just normal. Speaking as one who could be classified such, you can succeed if you have good parenting and a will to succeed.

  19. MrSilicon says:

    Whoopsies. See ADHD Is real.

I meant to say that the child and parents will *BOTH* sleep better once the surgery has taken place. It’s a miracle. Our son sleep through the night following his gland removal.

  20. Cinaedh says:

“He never slept through the night, since he was a baby,” his mother said.

What kind of lousy doctor misdiagnoses the results of no sleep as ADHD? Sadly, if this is common there ought to be a lot of lawsuits forthcoming.

I’ve seen sleep apnea misdiagnosed as ‘major depression’ and people’s live ruined by anti-depression drugs. There may even have been some suicides due to the drugs.

The thought process was; you can’t sleep because of the depression.

The doctors never considered the exact opposite could be true because that didn’t involve prescribing drugs in a five minute session.

  21. What next?
Hope that they give them ice cream to piece the kids off
I am sure they said the sane things about lobtomies as a treatment plan.
Why don’t they try it out first on the researchers
First the kid cannot keep still , next he will colds and infections all the time
    Its a con industry
At Chuckey Cheese ” A kid can be a kd”
Only problem was that my kid was scared to death of the giant mouse

  22. JoaoPT says:

#21 What, Doctors don’t prescribe drugs??? And who else is paying all those “medical congresses” in Vegas or Hawai??? Where do you think the money comes from?

  23. BdgBill says:

ADHD is a gigantic load of bullshit.

Kids that can’t / won’t sit down and shut up are little assholes with asshole parents.

I wonder where all the kids “suffering” from ADHD were when I was in school? Was this “disease” delivered on an astroid sometime around 1989?

When I was in school ALL the kids shut up and sat down when they were told to. Kids that could not shut up and sit down were removed from the class never to be seen again. The rumor was that they had to ride the short bus to school and were only taught how to vacuum and mop floors.

  24. master_of_fm says:

#25 – your assertion that “asshole kids” are the result of “asshole parents” is naive at best. good example would be my brother in myself. growing up my parents never had any problems with him in regarding school, behavior, or even anything. I on the other hand threw a desk at a teacher in middle school among other things.

My problem turned out to be diet related, specifically artificial flavorings and colorings. It wasnt until my mom came across the book “The Feingold Diet” that we were able to bring my ADD/ADHD under control. Diet may not be a solution for everyone, but I think a biggest contributor to behavior problems in a majority of kids today.

If you have not seen “Super Size Me” then you should really check it out. There was a really interesting segment about “troubled kids” that had been shipped of to a special school for “troubled kids” where they removed all processed foods from the cafeteria. These kids went from behaving badly to model citizens. From the video that was shown you wouldnt believe these were “troubled kids”.

  25. adhd says:

I have adhd and I have had lose of eating and i am always irritable, anxious, sick, stressed, and I tend to… dig my finger nails into my skin, I go to counciling but it’s not helping, My medication is not helping me focus, then i don’t know what to do but hurt my self and it makes me feel stupid, I need some tips on how to help me.

  26. dflynn1 says:

i just want to say that ne one out there that blames the parents is so totaly wrong. I am a seventeen year old gurl who has struggled with severe ADHD all my life and i would not in any way shape or form be the person i am today without my parents. im sure the parents did not choose to have an ADHD child there fore they have to deal with the hand they are dealt. i have struggled everyday of my life and they help me to get through it everyday so i jus wanted to say dnt blame them its not their fault
