Daily Mail – August 14, 2007:

A teenage waitress overdosed on caffeine after drinking 14 shots of espresso.

Jasmine Willis, 17, could hardly breathe and was taken to hospital with a high temperature and heart palpitations.

She had drunk almost three times the recommended daily amount of caffeine in just four hours.

She began her coffee binge last Wednesday after getting only five hours’ sleep the previous night.

“I decided to have a double espresso to perk me up,” she said. “It did the trick so I had one after another and they seemed to be working. I felt great – as if I could take on the world.”

By noon she was feeling unwell and crying and laughing uncontrollably in front of bewildered customers.

Her father sent her home but by the following morning she could not feel her lips and was struggling to breathe.

Miss Willis, from Stanley, County Durham, spent several hours under observation at the University Hospital of North Durham, where the caffeine overdose was diagnosed.

reminds me of the Futurama where Fry drinks 100 cups of coffee & becomes known as “that orange blur”

  4. John Scott says:

Coffee is not replacement for sleep. In fact I have cut my intake in half and feel much better. What is disturbing is how caffeine amounts have increased in drinks! People drink so much in soft drinks and coffee that I think is going to become another health issue for people.

  5. morram says:

Ha! Kids can’t handle their caffeine.
Coffee is great, I drink 35 to 45 cups a day.
It would be more but I stop around 1PM after lunch when I switch to tea. I don’t drink sodas unless is as a dessert

  6. Misanthropic Scott says:

    #6 – Morram,

You count cups? I count pots. I’m somewhat surprised this hasn’t happened to me … yet.

  10. joshua says:

What got me was the **only 5 hours sleep** bit. I wish I got 5 hours sleep.

  11. ECA says:

    PS…
    It isnt only the Caffeine..
Iv seen energy VITAMINS, that have 8,333% of your Daily B-12 + 4,000 of your B-6 PER PILL…
And many of these POWER drinks have the B12-B6 , AND the caffeine…
Think about what that WILL do to you.. ALONG with Mahong, Ginsing, and a few other things, that work as Natural Speed…

Anyone that has QUIT coffee, knows the affects…THINk about getting USED to these concoctions….AFTEr your matabilism has gotten USED TO THEM. This is NO hang over…ITS WORSE…probably ens up in bed for AT LEAST 1 week.

Is your typing a function of coffee toxicity or coffee withdrawal?

  15. 17 espressos seems quite low to me.

I am struggling to quit diet pepsi. The best is d.p. in a large glass w/ice and the secret is a 1/4 lemon squeezed. I am sorry but that is the ultimate. DO NOT TRY THIS! I was doing 10 cans a day. My wife looks me in the eyes and asks have you?? wish me luck.

Well I sort of divided since the story had cups and I didn’t want to confuse anyone with pots. My local machine has 12 cups but I only seems to get 10 mug loads. Usually I fill the pot 4 or five times and sometimes I’ll toss a bit of cold mug prior to a refill. After the coffee I start the water about 3 liters before riding home. This is only during my 4 day work week. I may or may not do a pot on the other 3 days maybe Saturday if I’m in the garage with bikes. I drink a lot of Orange, mango and other juices during the day. Beers and wines at night. Scotch with company. Like #10 mentioned I didn’t do coffee until I was near 25 and I was an 0600 to 1300 or 1400 guy for years. I’m thinking not feeling her lips and was struggling to breathe is her girl thing to leave work or get out of sex with her BF.

    #24 Mr Fusion,

It’s good to see you care about life.

    Your Buddy, noname.

  26. jdm says:

#20 – diet drink addiction is both a chemical and mental addiction, but not to caffeine. If it were so, you could easily switch to another caffeinated drink, such as green tea. The physical addiction to caffeine disappears within a few days after you stop ingesting it, just as the physical addiction to nicotine does with smokers. What you are left with is the mental addiction to the behavioral use and the substance.

However, it has been suggested that diet drinks may contain other, non-FDA-required-to-label substances which are very chemically addictive. I count myself fortunate that all diet drinks taste like pure crap to me.
