How to become a mad scientist for DARPA
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is approaching its golden anniversary, and there’s reason to celebrate. If we can trust the commemorative deck of cards they’re handing out at the DARPATech conference, the Pentagon’s most radical, forward-thinking scientists have accounted for no fewer than 52 major technical innovations since 1958. Check out the high-energy lasers on the four of diamonds, the night-vision goggles on the six of clubs, and the whizzing stealth fighter aircraft on the queen of hearts. And let’s not forget the agency’s trump card, here assigned to the jack of spades: Thirty-five years ago, DARPA helped create the earliest version of the Internet.
Well, there is a huge back log for prosthetic limbs. The prosthetic limb market has simply exploded in the last 5 years, no pun intended.
#1 – You bring up a good question: Does DARPA research things that can help veterans, or only war tools?
God points #1 and 2.
Since I miss seeing battlebots on TV, I’ve got to content myself with the Darpa version. Again, this year my favorite is Team TerraMax’s entry, since it seems to be the one that can do the most damage if there’s an interesting bug in the code.
