ScienceDaily: Scientists Isolate Chemical In Curry That May Help Immune System Clear Plaques Found In Alzheimers — It’s always about the food.
Researchers have isolated bisdemethoxycurcumin, the active ingredient of curcuminoids — a natural substance found in turmeric root — that may help boost the immune system in clearing amyloid beta, a peptide that forms the plaques found in Alzheimers disease. Using blood samples from Alzheimers disease patients, researchers found that bisdemethoxycurcumin boosted immune cells called macrophages to clear amyloid beta.
In addition, researchers identified the immune genes associated with this activity.
The study provides more insight into the role of the immune system in Alzheimers disease and points to a new treatment approach.
This was touted years ago in health food circles. I tried to incorporate more tumeric ((also used in many chili powder concoctions)) but pretty soon, when you start adding tumeric to scrambled eggs for instance, everything starts to taste the same?
I always wonder about what the real therapeutic dose is. Usually orders of magnitude above what any normal diet would give you- – -hence abstracts and pills.
Its all chemistry and you are what you eat and there are always interactions and tradeoffs. Learning more about what you put in your body is worth all the attention you can give to it.
Thank You.. Come Again
Is there any other empiric evidence that this might work, like for example the Hindus being considerably less affected by Alzheimers?
Epidemiological studies of this sort are sparse in India – #3. A few suggest there may be less Alzheimer’s. A few suggest no difference from the rest of the world.
The UK eats a lot of curry, much more than other western countries. The last I heard Alzheimer’s was a blight there also. Curry power varies greatly in ingredients, and quality. Also a powder that’s been sitting on a shelf for a while might lose it’s potency.
I hate curry.
Perhaps when I get old enough, I’ll forget that I hate curry.

Now we know why Apu is the smartest adult on the Simpsons.
It’s time to season the old farts.
Ahh crap…I forgot what I was going to say again.
