Explaining the Sopranos Finale
John C. Dvorak

Everyone is trying to get into the act about the miserable ending to the Sopranos with all sorts of theories. I can tell you what happened and perhaps the complaining will end. While I didn’t like the ending it didn’t completely surprise me since the entire series was filled with unresolved loose ends from the rape of the psychiatrist to the machinations with the Russian mob and the missing guy Paulie shot. An entire website could be devoted to loose ends. And the show, over the years, became very slow-moving so it was fitting that it ended in a boring café.

But what happened? We go to black then the credits roll silently.

It’s pretty obvious to me. It was the show that was killed. It was the end of the series, the show was killed – “whacked” in the parlance of the genre. Thus the abrupt black screen and the silent credit roll. The credit roll was the wake. The show is dead, over, done. Get it? And, yes, it is so corny that it was indeed lame. Argue all you want about it, but that’s the joke or the symbolism depending on your perspective. As for Tony being dead or alive. How funny. He is a fictional character! He was never alive to begin with.

You all got jobbed by David Chase.

San Jose Mercury News – McCollum: After `The Sopranos,’ a debate rages

What I didn’t expect (although perhaps, in hindsight, I should have) was how overwhelming the reaction would be and how passionate, both pro and con. The episode, particularly its final scene, generated more debate than I have seen in seven years on this job. Indeed, no other finale in TV history has come close to generating such an uproar.

  1. David says:

I agree with #7. The Sopranos ending, and actually the entire show, has always been way over-analyzed. Time for life to go on. Personally I think Chase just wanted to mess with all the people who sit around analyzing every word out of the characters’ mouths.

  2. Iamanassholetoo says:

heheheheh, I COULD care less about this crap, but that would take too much effort.

  3. Uncle Dave says:

#7: It’s 108 today in Vegas. Too hot to go biking. And I have enough drama in my life to add more.

I like the ending. Felt exactly right.

  4. mike says:

Now when the first trailer shows up on tv, everyone will just HAVE to see it.

  5. Berting Labra says:

Tony died in his sleep. The whole restaurant scene is a dream.

In the middle of his dream, he was whacked. That’s why the screen faded to black.

  6. bryan says:

There is no mystery. Earlier in the episode Phil was still talking with his wife when his brains where blown out. Lights Out!

Tony is sitting there surrounded by people who would kill him and then LIGHTS OUT.

    Brutal. Simple. Reality.

  7. Joe Dirt says:

    Actually, the ending was brilliant.

I got what I wanted…Phil Leotardo squashed by a big SUV.

  8. Anonymous Coward says:

I would have preferred the show ending with me getting a snarlin’ gnarlin’ from Meadow.

  9. Tony says:

Isn’t life filled with loose ends?

  10. Angel H. Wong says:

Thankfully the cast and crew is not loaded with bitter bitches like Sex & the City so I predict a Sopranos movie.

  11. Brian says:

36, and everyone else who thinks Tony was killed.

We never saw the show through his eyes, so why would we see his ‘death’ through his eyes? Why would our vision of him stop simply because he was killed?

If was killed, we would have seen it.

I agree, Chase simply did this to give the rabid sopranos fanbase something to drool about for the years leading up to the inevitable Sopranos movie that will be hitting theaters in 2009.

I wonder where all the clowns screaming ‘Tony’s dead!’ will be when he shows up for the movie.

  12. chris says:

So wasn’t there a scene where Tony and Bobby were fishing… discussing death and one of them said something to the effect, “when you die, you don’t hear anything, and everything just goes black”?

  13. Berting Labra says:

#41 Not if the perspective is from Tony while he is dreaming.

Think about it, the restaurant scene is “dreamish”, what with his choice of music and the choice of food and choice of restaurant.

If you were killed while dreaming, I guess your “vision” will fade to black.

  14. Berting Labra says:

The only question is who killed Tony while he was sleeping.

My bet would be Carmela because she’s a materialistic whore who stands to inherit millions, which would give her a cushy life with that Italian passing for a Samoan what’s his name.

  15. Myql says:

There never was a show called Sopranos. It was all just a dream.

    Myql

  16. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#41 – I wonder where all the clowns screaming ‘Tony’s dead!’ will be when he shows up for the movie.

In their mother’s basement, where they are now….

  17. Lauren the Ghoti says:

Never saw even 30s of the program. Surely I’ll download and watch the entire series at my own pace, maybe next year. I’m sure it’s worth watching – eventually – just like Lost.

But the only noteworthy TV news I’m aware of is the totally bogus cancellation of Veronica Mars. Now, that truly sucks dung.

  18. llseenm says:

It’s 5 days later and you’re still talking about it. Incredible! David Chase must be a genius.
