This video, from the WSJ, provides a short and concise explanation about the recent closure of the most popular TV station in Venezuela. Imagine if most of the population in the U.S. could only receive over the air broadcasts and the government decided to close one of the networks. How would you feel about it? The implications of such a move are terrible.

#37, rantsh, Rich, wealthy gringo? You don’t know me at all. I have no money, the doctors and lawyers got it all years ago. I’ll be lucky to live long enough to see the major bucks I poured into SS. All my wealth is my family and the few living lifelong friends I have (and a cat). Sorry to disappoint you, and now I know I won’t visit Venezuela.

  3. BubbaRay says:

#44, pedro, Educational. Thanks for the reply. I’m a very wealthy man with no money — my father is still alive, my wife still loves me (go figure), I’ve one living beautiful daughter, and (some) aunts and uncles. When you lose a parent, child or lifelong friend, you realize what’s actually important in life. It sure ain’t money. But I guess that’s just me, the rich imperialistic gringo pig. I didn’t realize how things are in Venezuela.

#44 Thanks pedro, could’n have said it better.

As for BubbaRay, Pedro has said better than I could ever do. Listen it doen’t matter if you’re rich or no (economically). As long as you speak english “you’ll be Bush’s CIA dog and the only reason you’re here is to kill Chavez”.

Either way, this has gone for long enough, I hope you enjoy your wealth (the real one) wish you become wealthy (economically) and things get better down here so you get to come visit us safely.

    Enjoy,

    Roderick

#46, Roderick, Thanks for the help and info about Venezuela. I’ve only seen photos about your beautiful country, but I admit I’m totally ignorant about the politics there. Must do more research, I hate it when I’m uninformed. Could you provide some informative links for us gringos about your situation?

  6. @$tr0Gh0$t says:

Well, there’s The Devil’s Excrement. This is a good site that also provides links in the left side of the page.
There’s also the CIA World Factbook – Venezuela (just to annoy the extreme paranoid leftists on the site).

  7. BubbaRay says:

#48, @$tr0Gh0$t . thanks for the links, very informative and worth an hour to review. This quote may help Gasparrini’s article:

“Venevisión and Televen, for economic reasons, realizing that Chávez will be around for a long time, re-accommodated their political line after the coup. RCTV and Globovisión didn’t. They forgot that their existence depends on Chávez. I am sure that when the Globovisión concession expires, Chávez will not renew it…”

Good Grief !! But some great photos of your country. I guess Chávez is really as bad as the fictional Kuzco.

  8. @$tr0Gh0$t says:

Yep, that page is updated almost every day. It allows you to get a feel of the local flavour of the crazy policies in kuzcoland.

  9. BH says:

“Fueled by higher oil prices, record government spending helped to boost GDP growth in 2004 and 2005 to approximately 18% and 11%, respectively. Economic growth in 2006 reached about 9%. This spending, combined with recent minimum wage hikes and improved access to domestic credit, has fueled a consumption boom – car sales in 2006 increased by around 70%”

    The economy in Venezuela SUCKS!

    from the CIA worldfactbook.

  10. @$tr0Gh0$t says:

#51, Yes it does indeed suck. With the currency exchange controls the internal inflation levels have reached 20%. This creates a situation where it’s no longer profitable to produce in Venezuela when it’s much cheaper to import goods. This creates unemployment and destroys private enterprise. If the price of oil goes down, the jig is up. The dependency on oil is so large that price fluctuations can cause financial earthquakes in the country.
Keeping your savings in Venezuela will only erode its value. Any person that can convert their savings into US$ has done so already. Local currency is becoming more worthless by the day.
Did you know that now you cannot find meat at supermarkets? Wonderful Economy indeed! 🙁
