Michael Powell stepping down as head of FCC –Listen to this quote from Powell.

“I’m a big believer in the First Amendment, but often I’m incredibly uneasy about lines we have to draw. No one takes pleasure in trying to decide whether this potty-mouth word or that potty-mouth word is a violation of the law.”

What? Is this guy still in the 5th grade? Potty mouth? Oh, brother.

  1. Ed Campbell says:

While it was a change to have an FCC head who actually new which button to push on his remote to run his TiVo, “bold and aggressive” had nothing to do with his tenure in office.

He made it clear, time and again, that “the marketplace” would rule his decisions. The marketplace being defined by the RIAA and the MPAA. Fair Use has continued to be squashed. And the Christian Right gets listened to with a hell of a lot more accuity than any other portion of the nation. Certainly, no one ever peeps at the Bill of Rights.

Saying all that, the function of the office should give at least lip service to leadership. That never existed under Powell. Frankly, I doubt if anything other than marching back towards the 19th Century is conceivable under the present administration. It just shows up a bit sharper where technology provides the battleground.

  2. Shawn Morrell says:

Bill of Rights? First Amendment? We are lucky that This man knew that these even existed.

Of course, I wouldnt blame him, having to stop all these potty-mouths from saying words that might corrupt the kids of this country. Although, the only way children can be truly protected from “potty-mouth” is to lock them in soundproof boxes, for society will surely let people develop “potty-mouths”

I must agree with Mr. Campbell on the fact that the only conceivable idea of the present administration is going back in time… but as long as they dont use their potty-mouth words.. they are fine with the FCC.
