Bush Anoints Himself as the Insurer of Constitutional Government in Emergency | The Progressive — It’s interesting how all these weird provisos are added to a governmental system that Republicans are supposed to hold sacred. And, of course, nobody in the supposed liberal media (all owned by large corporations) says anything about any of this. No analysis, nothing.
With scarcely a mention in the mainstream media, President Bush has ordered up a plan for responding to a catastrophic attack. In a new National Security Presidential Directive, Bush lays out his plans for dealing with a “catastrophic emergency.”
Under that plan, he entrusts himself with leading the entire federal government, not just the Executive Branch. And he gives himself the responsibility “for ensuring constitutional government.”
He laid this all out in a document entitled “National Security Presidential Directive/NSPD 51” and “Homeland Security Presidential Directive/HSPD-20.”
The White House released it on May 9.
Other than a discussion on Daily Kos led off by a posting by Leo Fender, and a pro-forma notice in a couple of mainstream newspapers, this document has gone unremarked upon.

It could be worse. They included the phrase: “…for ensuring constitutional government.”
Also, why would the oligarchy get everyone upset by nakedly seizing total power when they can continue to play the game, allowing everyone to vote for one party or another party – when actually both parties are run by pretty much the same wealthy people?
This is why I’m always amused at the almost insane hatred of Cons and Dems. You haven’t figured out that when you’re a little mouse, it doesn’t matter which cat you vote to elect. You’re gonna get eaten anyway!
I’ve never hated either side, and frankly feel sorry for those that base their emotional well being on the political fortunes of one side of the coin or the other. I vote either way, as the people and issues call me to, and I guess that makes me a bit of a blue rose in these United States. But I must say that the measures this administration have taken, often contrary to logic and the most deeply held beliefs of the nation, has me willing to believe he might use power like this to, essentially, appoint a puppet congress. The text of the order is quite clear; the president is the only one with power to choose representatives and justices (“continuity of government functions”), and this power arises after -any- catastrophe, on any scale. Further, the president and his cronies have repeatedly voiced the opinion that the “war president” is essentially all-powerful to begin with, so adding this on makes him, well, more a dictator that the English King every was for nearly a thousand years prior!
For the record, while there may be politics, there are no politicians, there all businessmen. You must be a wealthy person to ‘run’ this country. period. no exceptions, no provisos. wealths is the only thing that will get you support.
Continuity is a business concern. ‘the spice must flow’ (oh no, intended copyright infringement!)
#17, I’d hate to be right, but I’d bet that the first President to use this will be a Democrat.
Well, I would have a lot more faith in the leading Democratic Presidential challengers, Clinton, Obama, Edwards, or even Gore, doing right, then the current crop of Republican Bush butt kissers like McCain, Giulliani, Romney, or Fred Thompson. Of course, Ron Paul is the exception.
But then, I would also think Bush is pushing the Iraq war so the terrorists will again attack America on his watch so he can steal dictatorial powers.
I see Beck on CNN last night did this item, also claiming to be the only one to run with the story.

I think Bush is the perfect person to lead the American people; he’s stupid, vapid, racist, inarticulate, ill-mannered, an alcoholic, anti-intellectual, a complete ass clown, and those are his good points.
#39…Li….the power to appoint interim members of congress or the courts is only available IF the congress or the courts are wiped out en masse or so many of them they can’t function. Not just because St Louis had a flood. Unless of course all of Congress was in St Louis and drowned. 🙂

Why am I not surprised you would pick the one Republican that is honestly and truely a complete whack job.
Because Paul is the only Republican candidate NOT pandering to the hyper frightened little right wing nut evangelicals choosing the Republican nominee.
If someone doesn’t impeach, very soon, someone may necessarily defenestrate. I don’t like promote this or violence in general but stuff like this makes me less upset by such actions. You can easily build a case that defenestration would save lives and be “good” for the world here. And, it would have more sound logic by far than torture.
