Here are some of his famous quotes:
If you’re not a born-again Christian, you’re a failure as a human being.
This is probably as bad a day as the court has had on social issues since “Roe v Wade.” I had a student ask me, “Could the savior you believe in save Osama bin Laden?” Of course, we know the blood of Jesus Christ can save him, and then he must be executed. I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won’t have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be! AIDS is not just God’s punishment for homosexuals; it is God’s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals. The Bible is the inerrant … word of the living God. It is absolutely infallible, without error in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as well as in areas such as geography, science, history, etc. Grown men should not be having sex with prostitutes unless they are married to them.
Amazing – Googling must have brought a small steaming pile of
excre…xhristians here to continue apologizing for their fearless leader.Blowflies still settle on blowhards. Especially the dead ones.
#59 – Larry Flynt has more grace than the posters on this blog. That should tell you something.

It tell me that you don’t know how to use the words “some of” in a sentence.
People who preach HATE (and their hate-filled followers) should expect a crowd dancing on their grave(s). You cannot say that this formerly alive, now deceased buffoon was anything other than a media clown, intent on spewing whatever he could spew to keep the press cameras rolling. He wasn’t a “man of god” but an ego with a body attached.
I’m sure we’ll all miss the annoyances of the outrageous, homophobic, irrational rantings of a silly old man. I’m sorry his life was so miserable and perverted that his glee was in condemning others. His vile should have never been televised. His “followers” need serious counseling and help. They are as far from the definition of “religious” as one can get. They followed a false prophet and may they suffer if they continue down that evil path.
I can only hope that the new leader of the mindless ants in Falwell’s congregation is someone with some moral fiber, rational thought, and the talent to undo the damage Falwell (and his ilk) have created.
Turn up the music! It’s time to dance. The dead we mourn get respect. The dead that don’t, should be pounded well into the ground, and forgotten.
Maybe I’m a bit jaded, but I know people who are in positions where they are addressing crowds on a regular basis (mostly musicians, but this applies to anyone whose job requires addressing a crowd) and depend on positive reactions from that crowd to continue to exist in this state. Some are very down to earth and will talk to anyone who comes up to them. Others are only nice to people because they want people to keep coming to their shows and forking over the cover. It’s usually easy enough to tell the difference, often by the way they act on stage compared to off stage (with the exception of those who intentionally over the top for entertainment’s sake and openly admit it). From my experience, anyone who would rant the intolerant shit this guy did and then turn around and act all down-to-earth is probably full of shit. Sure, maybe that isn’t the case, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
^ that was hardly eloquent… I’m tired and want beer. Anyway, Dan, I’m not getting on you for your fond memories of this man. I just have a difficult time believing that this guy was some down-to-earth, nice guy. I’m sure it was a big act. Yes, I’m being judgmental.. I’m evil, so don’t expect much. 😉
I hear what you are saying. I guess you would have had to have met him to understand.
There was a good article in the press recently (can’t remember the source) about how Hustler’s Larry Flynt got to know Jerry Falwell in later years and they became good friends, even though they were both selling different things.
Jerry was a really big, funny, articulate, intelligent, imperfect, and sincere person. My only point was that he wasn’t a hypocrite like a lot of his peers.
“a bit of a hate monger” How milquetoast! Are you really THAT spineless and wimped out? Geez, man, you must have some tiny balls.
You can’t be a bit of a hate monger any more than you can be a bit pregnant. You either ARE or you AREN’T.
And, you now, there were people who thought Hitler was a pretty groovy guy, and artistic. He did create the Autobahn…what a concept! Oh, and there was Idi Amin (you know, that whacky guy, known as a jovial but brutal tyrant known as the `Butcher of Uganda’). I hear that he could tell a wicked joke, and be downright charming. What about Caligula? He sure liked his horse, and horse people all say that there can’t be all bad in any horse person. Ivan the Terrible was a cute kid. Papa Doc Duvalier (Haiti) was quite the card. What a joker…I mean, he had a way with words, and really seemed sincere. Quite the showman. After all, it’s hard to scare the masses into believing that you’re an incarnate VooDoo spirit. Mussolini could make a mean Alfredo sauce…
I’m sorry, dude, but your little misty eyed remembrances of Falwell and him driving through MacDonalds…just make me want to laugh at you. Quit being a weenie.
#68 – My only point was that he wasn’t a hypocrite like a lot of his peers.
Except that he extolled the virtues of Jesus Christ, his personal lord and saviour, and preached that Jesus was a model by which we should all live.
Then blamed lesbians and the ACLU for 9/11… Then expressed contempt for all viewpoints other than the Evangelical viewpoint… Then went on a campaign of gay-bashing (I admit, he was more polite about it than Fred Phelps)…
Yes. He was a hypocrit. There is no otherway to see the man other than the way that he was. He was a hypocrit.
Maybe he was a nice guy. Maybe he really whipped up a tasty apple pie. Maybe he’d be happy to come over on Saturday and help you move. I don’t know. But he was a hypocrit.
#69 – Mussolini could make a mean Alfredo sauce…
Dude… I’m gonna have to ask you to cite your sources 🙂
#69 – Yeah, and the defining characteristic of all of those individuals would be genocide and murder. It’s quite a stretch to apply that to a man who’s views happened to clash with your own.
Interesting observation:
There are about two and a half times the number of posts on this thread as there are on the Pope thread.
Do we care more about the nonsensical ravings of the lunatic mind than we do about really despicable comments from a truly mainstream leader of the oldest flavor of Christianity?
Or, should we draw the obvious parallel that religion gives yet another reason for humans to hate each other and justify killing each other?
I’m not saying that humans wouldn’t kill each other without religion. I’m just saying that people with normal morals processing units in their brains (OK, maybe Falwell didn’t really fall into that category) can suddenly be seen to truly justify or ignore hatred and violence and even genocide when seen through the twisted morals of religion.
And, yes, at least some of Falwell’s horrific beliefs really are in line with a literal interpretation of the Bible. Perhaps it’s time to ask the bigger questions about whether religion is really consistent with the type of society in which we want to live.
Do you think religion doesn’t really divide people up into Us and Them where followers get their ideas of Them from the similarity of the way in which they worship an imaginary friend?
Check for the definitions and root of the word sectarian.
An interesting critique of Falwell:

#38 FranIBC….funny you should say that Frank….I just read a bit on another blog earlier today….the good Rev. Phelps has announced his group WILL be picketing Falwell’s funeral. He considered Falwell a sellout and traitor to Christians and the word of God….so he gets picketed to.
#74 – hhopper,
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
I think for the most part he was an honest man, who really believed his words. Whether you agreed with him or not. A rare person in public life.
Just like Hitler, Pol Pot, Saddam, & Idi Amin.

The only problem is that there are a lot more people in this world that think as he did. How it is that a man can stand up in the name of one of the most loving enlightened beings in the universe and claim to be one of his followers is completely beyond me. No matter what rumors he has chosen to spread about Jesus, Jesus loves everyone unconditionaly and deeply. No matter what this horrible man has said during his life, the worst thing he has done is to make millions of gay men and women feel as though their God hates them for simply being who they are. It’s a shame.
At the very least, another voice of hatred and prejudice has finally been silenced.
