Guyana Woman Accused As Vampire Lynched
A crowd of Guyanese villagers lynched an elderly woman they accused of being an evil spirit who drinks the blood of human babies, police said Monday. Authorities in the South American country said the woman raised suspicions with unusual behavior and was set upon by villagers who apparently believed she was an “Old Higue”—the equivalent of a vampire in the local Obeah religion that blends folk magic and African rituals.
Some expressed surprise at the persistence of belief in Higues, a creature said to take the shape of an old woman who can shrink herself to enter victims’ homes through a keyhole.
Apparently the logic is lost on the superstitious local dummies that if the old lady could actually shrink herself to go through a keyhole that she’d be a little harder to catch and beat to death.

What! Nothing from the Bible?

J/P=?
Logic ? What logic ?
Brainless local bumpkins.

If she weighs the same as a duck…..
Do you think these ppl would vote for Bush jr?
Superstition is an international plague.
Makes perfect sense to me…
#4, Then she’s ah, ah, er, ah … a witch !!
And what do we do with witches?
(What floats in water, besides very small rocks?)
They aren’t maroons. They are just people and there are more of them than there are of you.
More people on this planet believe in a magical universe than in a
rational one. Even here in America. I think the current Administration amply demonstrates this.
The logical response would be to try to understand why this is so instead of falling back on ridicule.
Stupid people everybody knows you can not kill a vampire by hanging. A stake to the heart if I remember. She was probebly back by dark.
What happened to that woman was a trajedy. Folklore in Guyana is widely celebrated as part of our rich culture in Guyana. But it certainly came as a shock that in these modern times people beleive that such things exist and worst were willing to murder an innocent woman.
On the issue of being able to shrink to the size on a key hole, if the writer had done some reserach then he/she would have noticed that the Ol Higue according to popular culture is powerless after the sun rises.
As for those who wish to make this discussion about logic and stupidity. That is one problem that is not restricted to the developing world. Afterall President Bush was able to fool Americans into beleiving that Iraq has WMDs to justify his war.
Patty & Lloyda both made great comments. + Look at some Pagan & Wiccan beliefs and both of thos are growing rapidly esp in the US.
