NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s biggest wireless operator, on Monday unveiled a new mobile phone equipped with a motion sensor that lets users play games like the popular Nintendo Wii console.

With DoCoMo’s D904i, made by Mitsubishi Electric Corp., users can swing the handset like a tennis racket or wield it like sword to control game play, instead of punching on the keypad.

Games are among the most popular contents downloaded onto mobile phones in Japan, where most of the users are signed up to so-called third-generation (3G) networks that allow fast and interactive data communications.

Will we have geeks dueling with their cell phones whilst commuting?

Earlier this year, DoCoMo, which caters to 54 percent of Japan’s mobile phone users, introduced a phone that features a touch-sensitive screen and a model that gives off a relaxing scent.

I’ll skip this last comment altogether. We could be banned in Boston – if I offered my thoughts on this last technical advance.

  1. FrisbeePhone says:

So, will these phones initially work like WII remotes — being thrown through TVs, windows, at people, etc….

If it breaks because your hands are sweaty from a wicked (literal) game of “Phone Tag”, will the company replace it for free?

Is the company liable for any injuries sustained through repetitive stress injury?

  2. mark says:

Who’s the chick? She looks anorexic.

  3. sdf says:

#2, well statistically you probably know someone who has slept with her so ask around

  4. Angel H. Wong says:

    #3

And if that chick gets seen with an iPhone, they will be outsold in Japan.

  5. Bruce IV says:

    Copycats.

  6. stew says:

Looks like Ms Hilton to me.

  7. Pfkad says:

“Will we have geeks dueling with their cell phones whilst commuting?” Not until our telecommunications get as good what the Japanese have.
