Let the Tsunami Fraud Begin
While we’ve seen a dribbling of frauds come through the OnlyMyEmail anti-spam network based on the Dec 26th. tragedy over the past weeks, the Tsunami fraud campaigns are now certifiably in full swing.
Based on a number of factors, we believe both frauds originate from same team of spammers. While minor variations exist, generally speaking the following characteristics apply.
The two most popular versions have subject lines consisting of:
Subject: TSUNAMI VICTIMS PLEASE HELP, TSUNAMI VICTIMS PLEASE HELP.
Subject: sorry for that
The Senders:
One of these campaigns purports to come from a child victim who has lost his mother an uncle.
The other claims to be a request from the RED CROSS INTERNATIONAL.
Interesting Details:
In order to attempt to gain credibility, the Red Cross email links to an actual article on CNN.com and while the article is legitimate, the email itself is a fraud.
In both emails, the perpetrator is hoping to actually have you send funds via Western Union.
Both emails also direct the recipient to reply to an address different from the one that the email claims to originate from, which i spoofed.
For you research, copies of both campaigns follow, but remember, while the basic characteristics remain, there are many minor variations within these two popular frauds.
Additionally, we have stripped the actual spoofed domains as these are randomized and they likely are from legitimate (but spoofed) addresses and we would not want to further the victimization of the innocent owners of such addresses.
