We’ve written previously of the abysmal launch of the PS3 in Europe here. Now the sales are getting even worse. But what really sucks, I still can’t find a Wii for my son’s birthday!

Games Industry Biz – April 3, 2007:

Sales of the PlayStation 3 have dropped dramatically on the second week of release in the UK, with official Chart Track figures revealing a fall of 82 per cent.

Chart Track data is gathered from 7000 UK retail outlets representing 90 per cent of the software market, including GAME, Gamestation, Play.com, Asda and HMV.

A spokesperson for Chart Track confirmed the figure to GamesIndustry.biz this afternoon, stating: “Yes, sales of PS3 hardware have dropped by 82 per cent.”

  1. Steve S says:

Gee at a starting price of only £425 ($840 USD) each. You would have thought that they would have flown off the shelves. Go figure!

  2. KagatoAMV says:

Sony doesn’t have a “killer” game (or blue-ray title) out yet that demands the purchase of a PS3. The PS3 reminds me a lot of Atari’s Jaguar, high-priced console without any games really worth playing.

If I remember correctly, both the PS and PS2 releases were followed quickly by games that were in high demand, FF8 and Soul Calibur.

  3. SN says:

    1. “A typical blogger who only knows how to report negative news and a wannabe spin doctor at best.”

First you accuse me of only reporting negative news but then you accuse me of wanting to be a spin doctor?! That doesn’t even make any sense. Do you even know what a spin doctor is? It’s someone who puts a positive spin on negative news. So I can’t really be both. God, have you ever considered thinking before you mash your fingers on the keyboard?!

And to set the record straight, I actually consider myself more of a distortionist.

And as to your accusation that I don’t “really know much about consoles or gaming in general,” exactly what is there to know? People use consoles to play games and access content. Sales data is sales data. Exactly what else should I know. Do you have a Ph.D in game consoleology? What exactly makes you an expert in consoles more than anyone else who can read?

  4. RuralRob says:

I want a PS3 just to run Folding@Home 24/7. When I can pick one up in the bargain bin for $149 I’ll go for it.

  5. BubblegumRod says:

“Do you even know what a spin doctor is? It’s someone who puts a positive spin on negative news.”

Since when does a “spin doctor” have to spin something negative to make it positive? A spin doctor is someone who spins words to assure that they match their own opinions. So I do believe that Jeff had you on that one. Although I disagree with him, he did in fact use it correctly.

  6. Angel H. Wong says:

Look at the bright side, at least the PS3 sold more than Apple’s version of a game console.

  7. Dustin says:

Oh my god. I can’t believe people are making such a big deal about this. Of course sales are going to be down. After selling out at launch, people who really wanted a PS3 got it. Thats where your major sales are are at launch and holidays. Sales will steadily go up when more units are available and prices drop. Stop b*tching.

  8. Brian says:

haha people think the PS3 is relevant? That the sales figures dropping off so dramatically isn’t that big a deal?

You sony apologists need to wake up and realize the ps3 is a dead console.

  9. Simple says:

Well, the formerly-Sony-exclusive title, Ace Combat, that I want will be available on XBOX360.

I think Sony is unable to exploit their proprietary products, and push those products’ capabilities with software.

The PS3 (and PS2) should be a computer/Apple TV/game system/media hub – video recorder/everything and very hackable. I mean, the hardware cost (while on par with the Atari 2600 at launch – adjusted for inflation) is on the order of a low end computer. Yet the thing is marketed as an expensive games console, and that’s it (I have no idea if it does anything other than play games).

I only bought my PS2 12-18 months ago. I like it quite a bit. Currently I am not interested in upgrading because there is no compelling reason for me. It is more likely I’ll buy a 360 at the end of ’07.

It would be nice if PSP2 became something compelling… but lately the news indicates it will be slightly incremental improvement from the first generation.

  10. OmarThe Alien says:

What’s up with all these little green links? I wonder how much John gets for click throughs? And why, wondering even further, would anyone drill down any further than the first level?
    Just wondering.

  11. Puss says:

I’d go out and get a PS3, except I’m saving for a house that’s also priced at 3 TIMES what the market will bear. Oh yeah, except there are a LOT of non-gamers (perhaps they’re Mac owners that can’t handle more than 1 button?) that will pay 3 TIMES more than a house is worth, and FUCK the whole housing market up.

A house is NOT intended to be a investment vehicle, it’s merely supposed to by someplace to live in.

Whoops, was the topic something new and interesting, like the WII ?

    I’m a cowboy!

  12. Marc says:

John – send me the money and I will send you a WII.
Here in Switzerland you will find plenty of them in stores.

  13. Dr.Funbags says:

Jeff (poster numero uno) is just a member of the SDF (Sony Defense Force) an extremist wing known for its rabid Fanboyism. He really should know a thing about Spin Doctoring – all of his favorite PS3 sites are spewing it.

The links he shows are “legit” nonpartisan sites that spew info from both fanbases camps – seems there is alot of money to be made at these “news” sites from fanboy wars – they keep refreshing and checking the comments which reload the ads.

  15. ECA says:

    Sony is playing catchup.
the Xbox(not the 360) made a world for MS to play in.
When the 360 came out they had an Existing world to play in, IF you want to pay the money for it.
The PS3, is still strugling in that area. I am hoping Sony made the environment Easy enough to program 3rd party material, WHICH has been their PAIN for many years. Making the Hardware totally Alien to any decent programmer, has Worked against Sony and restricted Game makers in the past.

  16. James Hill says:

Sony continues to fail, and Angel and ECA continue to make some of the dumbest posts ever.

    Some things never change.

  17. tallwookie says:

#18 – LOL are you serious? Thats like mixing oil & water

  18. #17

Have you ever heard of Apple’s Pippin? Apple licensed the technology to Bandai 3DO style. It only sold 5000 units worldwide.
