Spanish police have arrested a Canadian man suspected of helping finance Islamist terrorist activities, authorities said Monday.

Brian David Anderson, 61, is wanted by U.S. authorities for fraud and is believed to have helped finance a training camp in Afghanistan, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. He was arrested in a Madrid hotel thanks to joint collaboration with the FBI, the ministry said.

It said Anderson is thought to be linked to a New York businessman, Abdul Tawala Ibn Ali Alishtari, 53, who was charged last month with terrorism financing, material support of terrorism and money laundering. Alishtari has pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

Alishtari donated $20,000 in 2003 to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the campaign arm for Republican senators, and more than $15,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee, the campaign arm for Republican House members.

The Republicans will now be donating the bucks to charity. The usual thing they do with embarrassing money.

  1. Mr. Fusion says:

And if he gets off on a technicality, will the Republicans keep the money?

  2. god says:

After a while, you have to wonder if leading Republican politicians ever donate to charity except for tax breaks – or to cover their butts.

Does the Republican or Democratic party have ANY money that is not embarrassing? Be honest now!

By the way, I hear that Canada may be hiding WMDs. I am forwarding an email with these facts (OK, rumors) to the White House. I can hear the rally cry now!
    Blame Canada!

    Different day, same dependable Eideard.

  5. MikeN says:

This has happened before. There was the guy who held the rally,’ Here that Mr. Clinton, we are all supporters of Hamas here, and I am a supporter of Hezbollah too.’ He gave money to W and Hillary so it wasn’t much of a campaign issue.

Different day, same dependable Republicans — and their sycophants.

  7. alger non says:

#6 – don’t dump on poor mike – after all he may just be another simple republican who’s making a buck off the war. And isn’t that the amurican way of conducting pretend-foreign policy, after all?

  8. James Hill says:

This isn’t a very good hack thread, but nice try.

Heh. All the stupid “if I were al-Qaeda I’d pray for the Democrats to win,” and here we see, once again, the obvious. Bush and his corrupto friends have been the biggest recruiters and fund-raisers the extremist Muslims have ever known. Of COURSE they want more Republicrats in office.
