Those famous words are NOT from we the people or even our elected representatives but rather are from a fund raising group seeking money to erect the Statue of Liberty.
1. NOT CONNECTED TO USA immigration policy in any way.
2. The RICH (those who give money to erect monuments) always favor excessive immigration of “wretched masses” as they make for cheap labor. The wretched masses already slaving away at cheap labor always protest immigration as “they’re taking our jobs!”
3. SOL said hello to those from Europe arriving by boat. A step above the wretched masses walking across the desert to get here.
4. Any country not protecting its borders will eventually become lawless and a cess pool.

I have to agree with bobbo here on all points. Besides we have a legal immigration process in place now as we did back then. We are not stopping immigration, we are regulating it as any responsible country should and must do.

Ummm no. It was a schmaltzy poem on the base of a statue. Based on my understanding of US civics, a schmaltzy poem is not a governing document or even a policy memorandum.
Guess what the Constitution DOES say:
“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
Note the use of the phrase “our Posterity.” Go grab a dictionary and find out what it means.
