Been thinking about that since it came up. I think the question re Confederate Heroes is open and shut a “black and white” case. There is no justification/excuse for those Slavers to be honored in any way. But to W&J: why the adulation? Why the need for statues raising these conflicted humans to the status of demi-gods? That is the basis for my consideration….not so much what they did in their time and place.
So “right now” I would vote for and be upset if all the Confederate Statues were not taken down. I would vote for but not be upset if the W&J were not taken down. Let the Majority Rule. To me…W&J is very much the same as Columbus. He was a hero when I was a kiddie…..but not today…… and I think all for good valid reasons. As stated, the Columbus review and concerns do all seem to fit with W&J with perhaps W&J having a bit more redeeming aspirations if not character?
Nice counterfactual on which the question perhaps should hang: if in counseling revolution, would W&J done so if they would have given up their slaves? I don’t think anyone knows, can best guess, that answer.
SLAVES: the basis for early American wealth. Its one thing to give up your mastery over another group of people, quite another to give up your own wealth.
