Kevin Johnson (D), the NBA star turned Sacramento mayor, was involved in an altercation with a protester at a charity dinner on Wednesday night – which reportedly left the other man bloodied and in need of stitches around his eye.

Sean Thompson, 32, threw a pie in Johnson’s face at the event at Sacramento high school – and witnesses say Johnson responded by “repeatedly” punching the man in the face. Police confirmed Johnson did hit Thompson.

The mayor did strike the suspect after he was assaulted,” police spokesman Bryce Heinlein said. Johnson’s chief of staff, Crystal Strait, said the man came up, pulled the pie from a bag, grabbed Johnson and shoved in in his face. She said the mayor defended himself. Witnesses told the East Bay Express that after Thompson threw the pie, he said something to the mayor. Johnson, they said, tackled him and punched him in the face repeatedly, more than half a dozen times, landing five to 10 blows. One witness described it as a “bloody pulp”.

Har. Actually this sounds like something only the Donald could be accused of.

so this guy who assulted the mayor got “pie eyed”

  3. Imagine if a white politician responded to a cream pie thrown by a black protester with “five to 10 blows” beating the protester “to a bloody pulp” as the article describes.

I doubt the Hurahs of approval would ring so loud across the land.

  5. MikeN says:

Pie thrower was upset that the mayor spent all the money for an arena for the Sacramento Kings instead of spending on people who needed the money.

Kevin Johnson should have been in jail for embezzling money 7 years ago. The Inspector General reported on it, but instead Obama fired the IG.

    • Ah_Yea says:

If Johnson hadn’t embezzled, he wouldn’t be a California Democrat!

  6. Hmeyers says:

    Are they arresting the mayor?

        • McCullough says:

Yep, as true with Liberals as it is with Conservatives. Civil court however, doesn’t have the same bite. Getting a judgement is one thing, getting paid is another.

          • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

Most judgements aga Rich people not that hard to enforce. The penalties aren’t really “that” big to spend an equal amount to avoid. Just steady persistence. Still true re judgements against poor people…who aren’t sued for that very reason.

Of note…it does help to be rich yourself when collecting a judgement…thinking of Gawker just being sued out of existence. Ha, ha…a story of our times…all the conflicting interests coming together.

  7. bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

A sports star over reacts to a personal insult?

    ………………… say it ain’t so!!

You know boys..the acts of those in leadership has consequences. How many “inner city youths” are going to act the same way now in response to petty or minor infractions? Is that what you really want……..or like Oh NO!==do you support the action and laugh at it while you clutch your guns for safety behind your locked front door? You see no connection at all?……. No…… you never do.

I get the urge to respond as the Mayor did. I give him: one punch. He should be charged for the extra points.

I agree he won’t be. Hope and assume he will get his ass sued off which is why most people don’t engage in such activities. Such bald stupidity is reserved for the poorly uneducated and grinning goons like Oh NO!

    • NewFormatSux says:

If the mayor is locked up, how many people will start throwing pies thinking they have a seal of approval?

      • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

Fair point. I said and mean “charged.” Punishment, in a vacuum…probably probation.

Assault and Battery is still a crime. I ASSUME -?- the pie thrower was arrested and charged as well?

Revealing a gap in my reading….what does happen to most pie throwers???? I assume arrested and charged dropped by most Public Figures not wanting the bad press?…………whatever. Its what such civil disobedience (sic) is all about: do the action, go to jail, draw attention/conscience to the issue.

sic: pie throwing is NOT civil disobedience but rather a low level crime.

        • Hmeyers says:

I agree with the 1 punch thing.

          I don’t agree with the 6 punches.

A pie in the face isn’t license to beat the shit out of someone.

          • NewFormatSux says:

Sure it is. It justifies a whole lot more. Pies can cause allergic reactions.

      • jpfitz says:

@ nfs, allergic reaction to pie? Ha ha ha. Next time the citizen who is upset at lying politicians will throw rotten vegetables and fruit. The good old days.

  9. Likes2LOL says:

Well, at least Mayor Johnson didn’t get a switch and whip the pie-thrower in the testicles, as Vikings running back Adrian Peterson did to his 4 year old son for using naughty words….

P.S. Gotta cut Kevin some slack, he’s been married to Michelle Rhee for 5 years (the former Bad Witch chancellor of D.C. Public Schools, just Google the Time Magazine cover http://i.huffpost.com/gen/2214320/original.jpg) and that’s got to be taking its toll on him.

    Nothing that a few court-ordered “anger management” classes can’t ameliorate… 😉

  10. moss says:

Like most bullies, I’d wouldn’t expect Trump to have the balls to. actually punch someone’s grannie without his bodyguards to hold her down.

  11. Vonster says:

    Consequence. Pure and simple.

  12. Martin says:

What did he expect would happen?

If you approach a stranger (much taller / bigger than you) and unexpectedly push something (in this case a pie) in his face do you expect a friendly handshake and a “thank you?” I think not. I think you might get the kink of reaction that Mayor Johnson demonstrated.

The “pie in the face” incidents are classless, childish, ineffective and inappropriate.

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

How do you judge an assault and battery much more violent and excessive than required to meet the threat?

      • Martin says:

Think about it. You’re concerned with the victims response. The problem is not with the victim the responsibility squarely rests with the attacker (pie thrower). The victim did kill the the attacker. Killing him would have been excessive, but there would not have been any response if the pie hadn’t been thrown.

Responsibility for this issue is completely the responsibility of the pie thrower. And, just in case of concerned, none of the responsibility belongs to the person who made the pie.

        • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

          No.

Self defense is allowed to stop the attack. Most pie throwings are over with the thrown pie.

If you go after the pie thrower….in reality that is a new and different series of actions.

You say the victim was motivated by the thrown pie……..well the pie thrower was motivated by the malfeasance if not criminal acitivity of the Mayor while in office. Which is worse????

further—you speak out of both sides of your mouth. If you look at me cross eyed….can I kill you as you started it? Or throw a pie??? If not……where do you draw the line? The LAW draws it at defending yourself…not attacking the other guy when his offense has been completed and he is running away.

          Please think better.

          • Martin says:

The entire problem began when the pie was thrown…it is an immature action.

If, and I repeat “if”, there are/were problems with how the mayor performed his official duties there are other courses of action that can be taken through the legal system.

Throwing a pie in the face of anyone, including a public official, is simply WRONG.

          • Hmeyers says:

I insist that if Martin throws a pie in my face and then tries to run away,

I have the right to catch Martin, tackle him and beat him until he’s brain dead.

            Because he started it.

  13. Mr Diesel - says:

    Battery is when:

Someone Intentionally makes physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with another persone.

    Assault is when:

The intentional use of force or violence against another, such as punching a person or striking the victim with an object.

The pie throwing dirtbag clearly did both. The mayor merely protected himself and when you must use force to protect yourself you use enough to eliminate the threat.

Simple really. Hit me with anything and I am justified in beating you until you are unconscious and I’m satisfied the threat no longer exists. Then I call for an ambulance to show I care.

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

Mr D: admirable that you start by defining your terms. Next step: actually use a dictionary rather than your faulty memory or making it up.

Did you not feel in your bones that both of your definitions were the same?

Download “Wordweb” for free and you can hot key the definition of most words and find:

Assault: A threatened or attempted physical attack by someone who appears to be able to cause bodily harm if not stopped

My favorite example: a sleeping person cannot be assaulted. ain’t that slicing it pretty thin????

Actually know the English language. What a trip.

      • NewFormatSux says:

Could you explain with your glorious reading comprehension how a sleeping person cannot be assaulted?

        • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

Hmmm…. see just above or Editors: repost for the flow?

          • NewFormatSux says:

Can’t tell if you copied the definition properly, but your examples are not right, and the definition you give doesn’t mean what you think.

          • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

            How so?

What definition can you link to that has any other import?

          • NewFormatSux says:

Try Websters, http://m-w.com. This ‘you have to observe it’ to be an assault, I think is your or someone else’s misunderstanding that an assault need not be physical.
So it can be a perceived threat OR a physical attack, which has been turned by someone into an AND.

Battery appears to be a repeated physical assault.

          • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

No Fucking Sense: why do you prove it by NOT linking to any definition..just the dictionary website…and then you don’t copy and paste what you think applies?

Its almost like you and Pedro are roommates and Pedro is using your account? Why do you allow yourself to look so incredibly stoopid?

Battery: can be a single touch including areas just close to you…ie: not even a touch.

            Words.

Buy a dictionary…. and have a friend with a high school diploma explain it to you.

          • NewFormatSux says:

You whine about how people don’t use google, then you can’t bother to click on a link and type ‘assault’ or ‘battery’?

          • NewFormatSux says:

OK, the legal definitions of the crimes line up with what you were trying to explain. Those are not the definitions given by Websters.

      • Hmeyers says:

Bobbo should have said something like …

“Chasing a guy who is trying to get away and tackling him and then punching him in the face 6 times is not self-defense.”

Mr. Diesel’s seems to think that because of a pie, the mayor is now free to stab, shoot or run that guy over with a car.

        • jpfitz says:

He, he, he. Funny but not for the activist. Um, Johnson wasn’t the only one to throw punches, others joined in with a few punches just for “good” measure.

        • Mr Diesel - Libertarian Deplorable says:

Actually I don’t think he is free to stab, shoot or run over the dipshit with a car.

The mayor is however, free to defend himself from anyone attacking him (assault and battery). Beat him until the assailant is no longer able to harm him.

        • Hmeyers says:

Why not stab the guy until he’s dead?

Or beat the guy until he’s dead?

Both of those result in the guy not being able to harm him too.

I think if a guy does a pie in the face — and that guy starts trying to get away —

I should be able to catch him and then tackle him and then hit him again and again until his skull cracks.

          • Mr Diesel - says:

            Now you’re talking.

          • jpfitz says:

Wow, rough talk from behind your keyboard, I bet you are an old fart, and that pie would have caused you to have an allergic reaction.

The guy who shot and killed 5 people in a mall in Seattle has been apprehended.

During the day, while they were still looking for the suspect they said showed a slightly blurry picture of the suspect and described the suspect as appearing to be “Hispanic”.

Reminded me of San Bernadino when it was like pulling teeth for the media them to accurately describe the suspect.

    • McCullough says:

Scott was also charged with assault with intent to kill in 1995.

The most shocking find in Scott’s record, however, is what occurred in Bexar County, Texas in 2005. In March of that year, Scott was sentenced to 15 months in state prison for evading arrest, and in July, he was consecutively sentenced to seven years on a conviction of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon…

One source, who asked CTN to refrain from using her name to protect her identity, told reporters that Scott fired a handgun at San Antonio police officers when they attempted to detain him in February 2005 after noticing that he was driving erratically.”

Apparently the WNBA is joining the national anthem protest …

          • NewFormatSux says:

Then you really haven’t been paying attention. ESPN is all about promoting women’s sports to people decidedly not interested. I remember one time they went on and on about a WNBA player who ‘dunked.’ They even added them to the men’s all-star game for awhile.

Bill Simmons complained that their sportsticker should run women’s scores in pink.

          • NewFormatSux says:

They’re still around because the league is basically owned by the NBA, and David Stern forced the NBA owners to own these teams as well.

          • Hmeyers says:

I stream. Netflix. Occasionally Google Play for video rentals. The occasional sporting event.

I believe you when you describe ESPN the channel. The only time I see ESPN the channel is if I am at a bar watching a game.

If you stream, anything you see has to be a deliberate action just by nature of how that works.

          • NewFormatSux says:

I think it was ESPN who was interviewing an owner, and they asked him about how happy he is with the wins his team has gotten, starting with the WNBA team he owns.

          • Hmeyers says:

I think they should merge the NBA + WNBA. Every NBA team has to be 50% women.

Why stop at National Athem protests, we can do better than that!

We can end segregation by gender in the NBA!!

            Merge the NBA + WNBA!

          • Hmeyers says:

And when they merge the NBA + WNBA together to end gender discrimination in the NBA …

They need to implement fairness in pay.

Can’t be paying Steph Curry more than the women players.

            Need to equalize the pay.

But if I were looking for a slick politician, I’d vote for her. It’s the one thing she does do successfully.

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

What specifically do you disagree with Hillary about?

I have never thought either of the Clintons were very “slick.” Seems to me they simply have the ego to lie until the press gives up. thats not slick…thats “got caught” and the short memory of the American voting public.

  23. I Surrender says:

Why would I waste my time trying to convince a lifelong Liberal to vote against this person? Her track record should be sufficient evidence to turn away. Nothing I say will change your mind.

She came off better which is to be expected…but it means nothing.

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

I’m not asking to be convinced of anything.

I’m curious as to your basis for what you post.

Its true I’m a life long liberal, most of the time, BECAUSE…the TRUTH has a liberal bias….so does pragmatism.

Pragmatism: what works. What normally doesn’t work? Thats right….Republicans and Conservatives in the current iteration.

So…..I’m curious. Have you got anything at all….or just BS?

      • I Surrender says:

Again, it’s her track record and lack of any accomplishments in govt over how many years?

I am not going to wast my time listing things so you can “parse it out”.

You’re just a troll, your opinion means nothing to me.

        • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

Yes, yes…. you are quite a man.

Sadly, the basis for your opinion means nothing to yourself as well. Thats why it reeks so.

          Sucks to be you.

News Update: the pie thrower “is planning” on suing the Mayor. No further details.

I hope he does and that he wins big. Can’t tell which I dislike most about the Mayor: that he is dishonest, or an ex-athlete. ….. good thing a choice is not required???

  25. Publius says:

The monopoly on violence is the property of the state, once again.

    No charges against the assailant?

    Proves my point.

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

Isn’t that exactly the way it should be? Who else other than gubment should have the right to use violence?

I assume for some reason neither on of us include the rights of self defense in its various forms….just violence? Hmmm…what about football, boxing….all sports? Thats violence too….

      Well….I tried my best.
