Harbin snow festival

A fatwa issued by Saudi religious scholar Mohammad Saleh Al Minjed bans the creation of snowmen, saying it is too western of a practice.

“It is not permitted to make a statue out of snow, even by way of play and fun,” said the fatwa.

After a snow storm on the Arabian Peninsula, children started building snow-camels — a rare incident that inspired the fatwa.

Supporters of the fatwa say the creation of snowmen or snow camels, rather, is a crude imitation of the West…

The camels, built in the northern part of the country, were a nod to the local culture.

“We have snow for fleeting days, maybe even hours, and there is always someone who wants to rob us of the joy and the fun,” said opposing blogger Mishaal.

It seems that the only thing left for us is to sit down and drink coffee.”

Be satisfied you can do that, Mishaal. We have fundamentalist religions in the US that say you shouldn’t drink coffee.

Oh lordy… cue the panicked wingnuts bleating about sharia in 3, 2, 1…

    • ± says:

Phydeau, what form of institutionalized repression and control is more odious than that exercised by Moslems?

    • NewFormatSux says:

Do you work for Oxford University? From International Business Times:

One of the biggest education publishers in the world has warned its authors not to mention pigs or sausages in their books to avoid causing offence.

Oxford University Press (OUP) said all books must take into consideration other cultures if they hope to sell copies in countries across the world.

As a result, the academic publisher has issued guidance advising writers to avoid mentioning pigs or “anything else which could be perceived as pork” so as not to offend Muslim or Jewish people.

    • Phydeau says:

Thanks guys, you didn’t disappoint me. Excellent wingnut bleating.

So let’s kick it up a notch. Let’s hear the wingnut “solutions” to this problem. I’d be disappointed if I didn’t hear at least a couple calls for Muslim genocide, mass deportation of funny looking furriner types with brown skin, nuke the Middle East, etc. Let your freak flag fly, wingnuts! No solution too outlandish. 🙂

      • NewFormatSux says:

We can start by deporting liberals who are so eager to cater to Islamic sensibility.

This one was more obvious than their usual lies…

    • Phydeau says:

My favorite #FoxNewsFact was a reference to the fact that the band Duran Duran came from Birmingham (the city in question):

In Birmingham, the local death squads go by the name of Quran Quran.

And, if reporting talent says actually enough times in a sentence, this amplifies credibility.

Hmmmm, maybe they should give “Reverend Al” a time slot.

      Pot, meet kettle.

    • NewFormatSux says:

CNN and MSNBC are not airing the new Charlie Hebdo cover, and you wish to comment on Fox lies?

Where does he live. Where is his mosque? Just outside those buildings sounds like a good place for a lot of durable Styrofoam snowmen. Maybe some inflatable ones would be good too.

Get with the program, man… It’s the 21’st century — Give ’em Frothy, the Aerogel Angel.

  6. JudgeHooker says:

OK you can tag this one as ‘religion’, although we need to recognize that this is really about international politics and culture clash, not really religion. Religion doesn’t cause this stuff, it gets abused by it.

  7. HUGSaLOT says:

how can anyone take anything seriously from someone titled as “fatwa?” LOLZ

  8. HUGSaLOT says:

Those “fundamentalist religions in the US that say you shouldn’t drink coffee.” don’t force it on people and kill you if you drink it. That said you *can* find Starbucks in Utah.

  9. Jerk says:

It would seem that these “fatheads” are the Islamic equivalent of our own Westboro Baptist Church. Only thing is, there does seem to be a lot more of them (probably because there is an almost near absence of any education system independent of it’s own bullshit religion).

In cast you forgot, Westboro Baptist Church and it’s jerk of a leader Fred Phelps (who is hardly any sort of “minister”), are the morons who protest U.S. soldier burials and hold picket signs saying “god hates fags.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church)

But really. Isn’t this just one more example of how one religion preys on ignorant (vulnerable) people who have not had any sort of chance to learn …anything?

    • NewFormatSux says:

No, they are not the same. I think the people at Charlie Hebdo would prefer the Islamic terrorists simply protested at their funerals. No went ever went into hiding because of Westboro Baptist Church, like Molly Norris after a fatwa was issued against her. Indeed, I’m surprised the entire ‘church’ doesn’t get taken out at one of these funerals.

  10. NewFormatSux says:

    ABOMINABLE.

  11. deowll says:

The author missed a lot of important points. The first is the people in America that say you shouldn’t do drugs including caffeine didn’t add in that they’ll kill you if you do.

On the other hand this mullah is in favor of terminating with extreme prejudice anyone that makes graven images including snowmen because the Koran forbids graven images.

  12. NewFormatSux says:

This is not an unreasonable action. There is not a lot of snow in Saudi Arabia, so having it used on snowmen might be considered a waste of resources. So this fatwa is similar to mandatory recycling.

  13. Jeremiah's Johnson says:

    Can they build snow erections?

The simple solution is to require ALL TV stations in this country to frequently show images of completely naked men and women. The fundamentalist whacks of all persuasions would have to leave the country to save the purity of their souls
