NEW YORK — New York state has the most segregated public schools in the nation, with many black and Latino students attending schools with virtually no white classmates, according to a report released Wednesday.
The report by the Civil Rights Project at the University of California at Los Angeles looks at enrollment trends from 1989 to 2010.
In New York City, the largest school system in the U.S. with 1.1 million pupils, the study notes that many of the charter schools created over the last dozen years are among the least diverse of all, with less than 1 percent white enrollment at 73 percent of charter schools.
“To create a whole new system that’s even worse than what you’ve got really takes some effort,” said Gary Orfield, co-director of the Civil Rights Project and an author of the report. “In the 30 years I have been researching schools, New York state has consistently been one of the most segregated states in the nation — no Southern state comes close to New York,” Orfield said.
Other states with highly segregated schools include Illinois, Michigan and California, according to the Civil Rights Project. The report, which used U.S. Department of Education statistics, also noted increasing segregation in upstate cities including Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse.

That is what happened in many school districts. Some of those southern districts are diverse as a direct result. Not saying I agree with it, but this model has enforced diversity in schools where they do this.
Look up Orfield’s history, he is a support of this specific model.
Wait, are these schools segregated, meaning it’s done by the government, or are they self-segregating, meaning it’s done by the people in the school district? While I find it unfortunate, it’s a reality that many people do segregate themselves by skin color, they want to live in black neighborhoods or white neighborhoods or Asian neighborhoods. My schools were all white except for high school with one black guy who was on the Ice Hockey team along with me and some other pond players. His Dad was the Hockey coach and a hell of a good coach and man. I’m unfortunate to have been segregated so severely.
I believe it’s all about the cabbage. Here on Long Island there are actual pockets south of the tracks where the population is mostly of color and lower middle class households. I live now in a town with a nick name of White Islip.

My example: 1972….I went to a Catholic parochial school in the South, 350 students grades 8 – 12, totally integrated, rich white kids, middle and lower class white and black kids, black local ghetto kids, a handful of Jews, a handful of Catholic Arabs, with an Catholic orphanage attached, all mixed up.

I had somewhat the same experience…went to an International School for diplomats kiddies. All kinds of kiddies there, many learning English as they went along. We got report cards including our class standing/ranking every week.
Ma and Pa sent me to the Place run by Jesuits because I was flunking out of Gubment schools==bored out of my mind. It cost them extra money, but they did it.
I started out being ranked like 57 or 58 out of 60 class size. I still remember the pride I felt as I advanced through the ranks. Don’t even remember where I wound up===maybe around No8?, but all I remember is “getting better.”
