A Florida teen with an exemplary record is facing federal charges after conducting what a classmate calls “a science project gone bad.”
16-year-old Kiera Wilmot is accused of mixing housing chemicals in a small water bottle at Bartow High School, causing the cap to fly off and produce a bit of smoke. The experiment was conducted outdoors, no property was damaged, and no one was injured.
Not long after Wilmot’s experiment, authorities arrested her and charged her with “possession/discharge of a weapon on school property and discharging a destructive device,” according to WTSP-TV. The school district proceeded to expel Wilmot for handling the “dangerous weapon,” also known as a water bottle. She will have to complete her high school education through an expulsion program.

“She just wanted to see what happened to those chemicals in the bottle,” a classmate added. “Now, look what happened.”Polk County Schools stands by its decision to expel Wilmot, asserting in a statement, “there are consequences to actions,” and calling Wilmot’s experiment a “serious breach of conduct.”
Oh, well. Another potential career as a chemist thwarted by the man.
The idiots from this school who allowed this arrest to happen should be in jail instead of the poor girl. And you think it’s ok these kind of morons teach your children?
Someone needs to complain to the school administrators that the state of Florida is shaped like a gun, and thus they need to leave the state, zero tolerance you know.
Ever watch that old B&W Disney movie “The Absent-Minded Professor”? Not the Robin Williams remake. But the Fred McMurray version? In the early minutes of the movie, right after the lead in credits. The Proff blows up his own science classroom, demonstrating some chemical experiment. And naturally, nothing administrative happens to him. That was back in the 1960s. So nowadays, if some kid mixes vinegar and baking soda, in a water bottle, outside the school. They get expelled! Kids just can’t imitate the things you see the groups doing, without getting their heads handed to them.
Meanwhile the US has far more serious breaches of the law. Like bank and Wall Street executes sending the economy into ruin. And not getting any jail time for it. They ought to have been caught exploding a water bottle in school. So they could at least get some time out, for their bad behavior.
Schools are notoriously touchy on the subject of students contriving chemical or biological weapons in lunch break.
The last thing they want is for some kid to do something different, innovative, out of the box. We all know that great advances in science and technology are the result of purposeful, directive study. Nothing new comes from someone playing with things they don’t understand. How dare she…..
