Example of unbiased, US media coverage in the middle of the action

On one side (the one the Obama supports wholeheartedly) are the Israelis who say they are just protecting themselves from terrorists wanting to destroy them.

Israel bombed dozens of targets in Gaza on Monday and said that while it was prepared to step up its offensive by sending in troops, it preferred a diplomatic solution that would end Palestinian rocket fire from the enclave. Mediator Egypt said a deal for a truce to end the fighting could be close. The leader of Hamas said it was up to Israel to end the new conflict it had started. Israel says its strikes are to halt Palestinian missile attacks.

On the other are the Palestinians who see Israel as oppressing them.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip erdogan described Israel on Monday as a “terrorist state” in carrying out its bombardment of Gaza, underlining hostility for Ankara’s former ally since relations between them collapsed in 2010.

His comments came after nearly a week of Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel and Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip. An Israeli missile killed at least 11 Palestinian civilians including four children in Gaza on Sunday.

Given how the Israelis treat the Palestinians, one has to wonder who has the better case.

“They are now not allowing desalination plants in and water purification plants in and without water you cannot live and the UN report stated that by 2016 that the water in Gaza will be undrinkable and by 2020 the aquifer will be beyond repair,” said Derek Graham a pro-Palestine Irish activist in a Wednesday interview with Press TV.

The Israeli regime denies about 1.7 million people in Gaza their basic rights, such as freedom of movement, jobs that pay proper wages, and adequate healthcare and education.

This is interesting.

If you and your family have lived in a land for generations and you are attacked and occupied by a foreign nation – and you fight back by any means – you are not the terrorist.

  2. Nate says:

But but but but but but…..there was a kingdom called Israel there 3500 years ago, and God said that the Jews could have it forever, but they haven’t had it for 3500 years, but but but but but but but but but….

    • Charlie Primero says:

In the Torah the God Yahweh demands that the Israelites invade neighbors and murder them. In exchange for the fresh blood, the Israelites get their neighbors’ stuff.

Consequently, it doesn’t matter who lived on the land first. When God says kill, you obey.

  3. Ouriel Ohayon says:

this is what happens when a tech review blogger tries to make a post on politics…Did you even try to understand the history of this conflict? Did you know there was a war, won by Israel? Did you know Israel is providing to palestinians (who by the way receives hundreds of millions of dollars of aid every where) tones of food, water, medical supplies every week?

Oh yes,..i am taking shortcuts…but so are you…

    • What? says:

Ariel, do you understand the history of the conflict, or are you a brainwashed puppet from a communist state that has been trained to support the oligarchy who grow fat bellies from your blood?

      I thought so.

  5. deowll says:

Hamas wants to destroy the Jewish state and kill all the Jews. If they ever achieve that I suppose they will move on to killing all the rest of the infidels.

Since the Jews strenuously object to dying I’m not sure when the war will end. Please understand that Hamas has never signed a peace treaty it didn’t intend to break. It just wants cease fires to rebuild for the next round. If Hamas had wanted peace and prosperity it could have had that 30 years ago.

    • Blarf says:

…and if Israel stopped giving Hamas all the arguments they ever needed to continue their war against the illegal occupants, Hamas might actually lose the power base they need to keep up that campaign.

Instead, Israel continues an unrepentant near-apartheit policy of discrimination, stoked on by large groups based on institutionalised racism and aggressive expansion and even more illegal occupation.

A history of being a victim never entitles you to do the same to others once you’re in power, and bullying the smaller kid is never a good way of making him hate you less.

    • shooff says:

      Dave,

Who do you think will win, China and India vs. Terrorists?

The infidels 50% of the world (India and China) could care less.

I’ll take the money line on the non-muslim asians vs. these hopeless uneducated losers.

  6. fred says:

The biggest mistake of the 20th century was the establishment of the state of Israel – and that is not intended to be, nor is it, an anti-semitic statement. Without that politically questionable act, none of this trouble would exist.

      Too true.

  8. spsffan says:

Once again, all this could be avoided if we had taken my advise years ago an neutron bombed the entire Middle East. And once again, sure, you will kill a few hundred decent innocent people, but you will rid the world of millions of evil freaks.

Now, why aren’t we discussing important things, like the end of Twinkies??????

  9. Uncle Patso says:

What a Gordian Knot! The resentments of dozens of groups going back almost as far as all of recorded history tie this area of the world into knots of daunting complexity, from the movements of various populations chronicled in the Old Testament, to the predations of the Roman Empire, up to the two World Wars and into the 21st Century.

The case can even be made that the illness that struck Woodrow Wilson in 1918 (possibly a case of the influenza that killed 25 to 50 million around the world), leading to the differences between his famous Fourteen Points and the Treaty of Versailles had an effect, in that the onerous terms of retribution imposed on Germany led to the second World War, which allowed the heinous Nazi “Final Solution,” which led to such worldwide guilt that the partition of Palestine and the founding of the State of Israel seemed like a good idea to the Allies and the United Nations.

Not being a big student of history, I don’t know what ought to be done about it all, other than this: bombing and killing populations, by any group, is evil, and should be minimized to the greatest extent possible.

  10. dave 1001 1001 1001 says:

It just goes on and on and on. Both sides are responsible and neither side appears to want peace.

  11. MikeN says:

I thought this type of Left Jew-hating was Eideard’s domain, and Uncle Dave limited himself to making excuses for criminals and bashing cops?

At least you didn’t run with the picture of a Palestinian kid hurt by Israeli bombs, which turned out to be an Israeli kid hurt by Hamas rockets.

Principles of Geneva Convention and general rules of war, are that you differentiate your targets, civilian and military, and that you differentiate yourself from your civilian population. Israel tries to hit military targets, while Hamas launches rockets and actually prefers to hit civilians. Also, Hamas makes no attempt to distinguish itself from civilian population, placing weapons in mosques for example. This is also a desired goal, as it restrains Israel in its counterattacks, and gives them propaganda weapons for their media war, in which Uncle Dave has now enlisted this blog on the side of Hamas.

    • shooff says:

Where are drone attacks addressed in the Geneva Convention…..how about Gitmo?

Smoke your Geneva Convention it’s not worth anything today.

  12. MikeN says:

By the way, Palestine historically refers to Israel. The modern Palestinian is no different from Jordanians. For some reason, Hamas is not attacking Jordan for occupying Palestinian lands that it seized in 1947-48.

    • What? says:

Oh, so you’re saying “Palestinians” are actually “Jews”, and “Jews” are “Palestinians”??

Now that we have bases all over the Arabian Peninsula, thank you Bahrain, Iraq…We don’t need to blow 3 billion a month on Jewish Welfare State.

Conservatives want government to be our lives. That’s why they are losing and will continue to lose.

Bomb our hospitals with money, not poor Gaza residents that the Jews drove into the see. Thank god the Najavo are unmotivated. They would have loved to have had some long range rockets.

      • McCullough says:

“Not really. Liberals are about less government in peoples lives and surely the lives of others.”

  18. Ah_Yea says:

I am always surprised by the number of imbecilic comments on this blog, with a few scattered sentient thoughts.

The state of Palestine doesn’t exist because it shouldn’t.

The “Palestinians” joined with the Central Powers in WWI and lost. They repeated this foolishness and joined the Axis powers in WWII and lost.

These fools then again tried to kill their host, the king of Jordan and take over and lost.

They don’t deserve a country. They are losers in every sense of the word. The only reason they exist is for the other Arab countries to have a political football.

They don’t deserve to have their own country any more than Austria-Hungary, Prussia, the Ottoman Empire, or any other country that dissolved through war.

They were and are the perpetual losers. They have lost every war the entered into. End of story.

  21. bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

On one side (the one the Obama supports wholeheartedly) are the Israelis who say they are just protecting themselves from terrorists wanting to destroy them. //// Too simple, but more true than false. Each new rocket is a fresh justification to bomb the shit out of who sent it including the collateral damage for 500 yards around the target. Jews are too christian in their care for their violent attackers.

On the other are the Palestinians who see Israel as oppressing them. /// It is amusing most of these types of comments arise from an assumption that the Palestinians “should be” allowed to rocket Israel and to invade and conquer it. Palestine standing unique in the history of any defeated peoples thinking this way. Most often, people are sane enough to know they lost and they justify their actions on different bases as in “its a continuing struggle” not “we have the right.”

Given how the Israelis treat the Palestinians, one has to wonder who has the better case. /// I can not find any confirmation of the anti-desalinization plant. In fact, just the opposite such as
    http://guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/aug/30/water-crisis-gaza

As always: there is no right or wrong to land “ownership” or more correctly land occupation. EVERYWHERE, at every time and place it is held as a result of power. Few nations would put up with crap from the losers as Israel has done. I have never read a good explanation for it. Most nations would MASSIVELY retaliate.

The growth of Israel over the years…//// Yep, after each war that Israel won, they advanced their borders. Less than anyone else would have done, but it is near worthless desert unless you have no other options.

We are are more alike one another than different regardless of the minor differences that cause strife. In fact, thats the very problem.

    Ha, ha. ………………………..

    • Bob73 says:

Holy CRAP!! Something I finally can agree with Bobbo on. Where’s the typical liberal stance of “the Palestinians and their Hamas leaders are righteous no matter how many rockets they unilaterally fire into Israel nor how many of their children they put up as shields”? And wonder of wonders, no name-calling. :-O
      I’m astounded!

  22. general betray U.S. says:

They tried to kill Anderson Cooper. That’s a hate crime now.
    USA should nuke em all!

  23. Homeshield says:

Gosh it’s such a mess over there. Israel is surrounded by many people and nations that want to destroy it… They walk a tightrope between pissing everyone off (which will at some point happen and then most likely lead to their destruction…) and getting pissed on. Tough spot to be in.

  24. MikeN says:

Someone says he wants you dead. He routinely fires this at your land, hoping to kill you.

    http://chicagoreader.com/binary/9082/1353108474-fajr-5.jpeg

    Do you

    A) strike a deal with the man to let him have some of your land

    or

    B) try to have him stop trying to kill you, by killing him if necessary?

    • Rick says:

Iran shipped heavy rockets to Hamas in pieces, then provided the technical expertise to help them re-assemble the rockets and launchers inside Gaza.

  25. MikeN says:

Between “Palestine” and Israel, where would you rather live? Which country is closer to civilization in your view?

  26. sargasso_c says:

One country in the middle east lets women drive, vote and stand for public office. And every other middle eastern nation wants to destroy it.

  27. bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

This has almost nothing to do with cultural and historical differences between Israel and the rest.

    Its all more basic.

Israel took land and did not kill all the inhabitants. The dispossessed inhabitants and their kiddies are not allowed to emigrate to surrounding Arab lands, so they want their old lands back.

Easy Peasy…… just as people everywhere do.

    Ain’t that a bitch?

  28. MikeN says:

The Koran says Israel belongs to the Jews.

  29. MikeN says:

Rockets have been going into Israel for months. Only when Israel fights back is the rest of the world interested in a ceasefire. Dvorak blog only posts when Israel tries to stop the rocket attacks. Does the blog believe Israel’s security fences should be torn down as well?

  30. MartinJJ says:

Gaza basically is an open air prison with about 1.5 million people under terrible conditions. Israel is still building a giant wall around it. After a few rockets they park a giant army around it also and just kill hundreds. If all that’s isn’t worse enough, Israel is calling for attacking Iran also. While they drown in nukes, Iran can’t have them. Talking about hypocrite. And they still want all the land between the Eufrat and the Tigres. The promised land. And lots of your tax dollars are going to Israel every year.

Maybe just flatten Israel and everyone on this planet would have a lot less problems.

    • MikeN says:

So why is Israel building the wall? Perhaps they should have thought of that before sending in people and cars with bombs?
