A Republican Senate hopeful sparked outrage on Sunday by suggesting that “legitimate rape” rarely results in pregnancy due to a woman’s biological defences. Todd Akin, a member of the House of Representatives and recently appointed Senate nominee for Missouri, made the claim during an interview in which he attempted to explain his no-exceptions policy in regards to abortion.

In reference to pregnancy resulting from rape, Akin told KTVI-TV: “First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that is really rare.

“If it is a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try and shut that whole thing down.”

    So to follow his logic:

“If it is a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try and shut that whole thing down.”

    ******and so******

If the female gets pregnant, the rape was legitimate therefore it’s the female responsibility/fault for getting pregnant.

I can see he really thought “long and hard” about this one.

I agree. Politicians should stay completely away from medical matters, as all of them are just talking out of their asses…to wit:

“[L]et’s take the example of something like diabetes, one of — a disease that’s skyrocketing, partly because of obesity, partly because it’s not treated as effectively as it could be. Right now if we paid a family — if a family care physician works with his or her patient to help them lose weight, modify diet, monitors whether they’re taking their medications in a timely fashion, they might get reimbursed a pittance. But if that same diabetic ends up getting their foot amputated, that’s $30,000, $40,000, $50,000 — immediately the surgeon is reimbursed. ” –Obama

And with that said, I still say California has Missouri beat for crazy ass dumb shit heads. And I only have to give one name to prove it – Nancy Pelosi! (Who, by the way, could probably use a little “legitimate rape” for what she’s done to America.)

Missouri, my home state….never good when it’s in the news. Anyway, this is the Church of the Pentecost and Baptist Union bible belt here, and every Sunday there are evangelical preachers telling people that rape can’t cause pregnancy and that doctors who provide abortions are guilty of first degree murder… Sometimes the politicians who pander to this crowd forget they really can’t say that kind of thing on T.V. As another regular poster frequently quotes, “same as it ever was” –Talking Heads

  15. NewformatSux says:

So he is willing to support not killing a child because his father is a rapist. Most people are not comfortable with this formulation, so he says it is a rare situation. Compare this to the current president, when asked why he would support killing babies even after they survive an abortion, he says it is above his pay grade to determine whether such a child is alive.

  16. steve says:

I wish everyone was a democrat and smart. It would be such a better world.

  17. orchidcup says:

The position of Todd Akin on this subject is in line with the pro-life agenda of right-wing evangelicals.

Here is a reference to a study which claims that pregnancy from rape is very uncommon:

Concerning this, Dr. Stephen Krason writes: “A number of studies have shown that pregnancy resulting from rape is very uncommon. One, looking at 2190 victims, reported pregnancy in only 0.6 percent.” (Abortion: Politics, Morality, and the Constitution [Lanham, MD: University Press of America, 1984], p. 283.)

This reference is cited on this web site: ChristianAnsweres.Net

Is abortion justifiable in cases of rape or incest?

I find it difficult to believe that any study confirms that women who are raped rarely get pregnant. I would have to see that study.

Ain’t that the truth. Texas thanks California for all those tech companies that came to Texas out of California’s stupidity and greed.

        • NewformatSux says:

Why do you say that? California politicians merely feel that they are the reason for companies’ and people’s successes, and should be able to take as much of their income as they feel they need.

          • Guyver says:

It’s a shame. The government couldn’t maintain their entitlement programs as they noticed their tax revenue shrinking.

What did they do? They just raised taxes instead of killing off entitlement programs. California is the U.S.A’s “Greece”.

  19. NewformatSux says:

Pregnancy from a single act of sex is probably rare anyway, so studies that show a low percentage of pregnancy may actually be proving the opposite of what Akin is saying.

This is not too different from Obama and other liberals saying their policies only affect a small percentage of the population, so you shouldn’t worry. Tax cuts on 2%, your health care plan will not be affected, etc.

    A. Restrict the Vote policies under cover of anti-fraud to remove a disproportionate amount of Democratic Voters–currently underway if not alreay in place in about 15 states, most of them swing states.

    B. Democrats helping to fund legitimate Republican candidates they think would be easier to beat? I think I heard this happened in Missouri with McCaskill funding Akin assuming his ultra-retarded positions would come out.

Is it partisan bias on my part I think A is Heinous, and B doesn’t count?

    Silly Voters.

  23. NewformatSux says:

awhile back, a conservative columnist was on a TV show defending gun ownership, saying it is very useful to protect from rape. The liberal on the show said that the chance of the middleaged to old columnist’s being raped was very low. This did not lead to outrage from liberals as it advanced a liberal policy position.

    • bobbo, atheists in charge could not make the church look any worse says:

You are quoting an accurate statement whereas this thread is about Akin’s INACCURATE statement.

  24. Glenn E. says:

This Akin clown must be quoting “doctors” of theology. Not doctors of medicine. I’m sure the former believe this nonsense about a “legitimate rape”. What the hell does that even mean? Is there a “legitimate bank holdup”? Where no money is actually stolen, but the robbers still get away with a bag of loot? That neat little trick only worked for Lehman Brothers. But perhaps not for very long.

  27. NewformatSux says:

I have some sympathy for Mr. Akin. His use of the term legitimate rape means he is aware of how the left is spreading propaganda. They tell tales of how women are more likely to beaten the day of the Super Bowl, or any other football Sunday. Then they put out studies of how so many women are raped. The key point in these studies that is often buried, is how they define rape. A quick google search on rape stats finds one report that 7% of men have engaged in behavior that legally meets the definition of rape, 27% of women have experienced it.

    • Cap'nKangaroo says:

I strongly disagree. I have conversed with people who hold his belief that pregnancy cannot result from rape. Their logic goes as follows: rape cannot result in pregnancy so if the woman is pregnant it could not have been rape, i.e. “legitimate rape”.

This is usually followed by the assertion that there is far less rape because the numbers are skewed by women making false claims to get sympathy or deny a one-night fling or such. Again usually followed by the hint that the woman did not show enough physical injuries to back up her story that she was “forced”.

      • ECA says:

DO YOU KNOW THE RULES FOR WOMEN IN A RAPE SITUATION??
        Go find them..PLEASE..
if nothing else go ASK a WOMEN..

the IDEA to fight BACK HARDER..is STUPID.

HOw would you feel if a person 50+ lbs more then you , started BEATING YOU?? to rape you..
        OK, lets add to THIS..
        IF you are a GUY…
SOME HOMO, that out weighs you by 50+ lbs, and know HOW TO HIT…is slamming you against a wall/floor..and ripping your clothes off.
every time you TRY to move, he SLAMS your head/face into the FLOOR..
What are you going to DO??
also, this is 1 room and has 1 DOOR..and HE LOCKED IT..
BEND OVER take it like a MAN..( i think is the saying??)

        • Cap'nKangaroo says:

I am sorry ECA if I was not clear in my thoughts. I will try again.

Representative Akin reminds me of a number of people (usually conservative and religious) who I have dealt with who deny that rape can result in pregnancy. They also deny that many of the claims of rape are actually rape, but are actually the woman having second-thoughts about a sexual encounter. They also sometimes claim that the lack of injuries invalidates the claim of rape.

I do not have these beliefs. I recoil from the people who expound on these beliefs. And I despair that in this day and age, such ridiculous beliefs can still exist and how these idiots will actually speak these beliefs aloud in the presence of another human, much less speak them in front of a microphone.

          • jpfitz says:

-He can, within bounds, say whatever he wants to.
-He has the absolute right to expose his ignorance by speaking, which he did.

I too have come across people who believe as part of their religious world view that women’s bodies somehow sense rape and somehow does not get pregnant. Idiots.

      • NewformatSux says:

The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry for “Feminist Perspectives on Rape,” for example, states that “we must recognize that, in some cases, ‘yes’ also means no. . . . The man may threaten to sue for custody of their children, to derail her green card application, to evict her, or simply to sulk and make her life miserable for days should she refuse to have sex. Which (if any) such nonviolent coercive pressures should be regarded as rape, either morally or legally, is a matter of some controversy.”

        From Dennis Prager

  28. If a woman miscarries the fetus, that’s a sign that her claim of rape is legitimate. Otherwise, she probably consented at the time and is lying after being overwhelmed with shame and regret.

And it’s true that witches do float. Always burn them.

  29. So what says:

Thanks todd, we were ahead of Mississippi until you had to go and open your mouth.

  30. Glenn E. says:

Thinking just a little bit outside the box, for a moment. I suspect what Akin was asked to do by the GOP, was to “fall on his sword”, so to speak. So Romney won’t have to come up with his economic plan to save the US. Temporarily diverting attention away from this subject and Romney’s failure to disclose all his tax filings, for more than one year. Things were just getting a little too much, “put up or shut up” for Romney, at this stage. Time to call in a scapegoat. And William Todd Akin drew the short straw. So he makes this rather obvious verbal blunder. Or is allowed to. Calling rape either “legitimate” (aka, not consensual sex), or (by extension of his logic) “non-legitimate” (consensual sex). In other words. Akin somehow pretended to confuse rape with normal procreation. Which is kind of like confusing robbing a bank, as working in a bank.

I think Akin could simply be a patsy for the GOP. Because we’ve never heard from him before. But out of the blue, they give him a soap box to embarrass himself on. And while he has a Masters in Divinity. He has neither a medical or legal background. So he shouldn’t be called on to interpret what “rape” means. So I think they put him up to explaining why he believes all abortions are bad. Just to have him crash and burn, to take the heat off Romney. Or maybe make Obama look good. If the GOP really wants to lose this election.
