I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and simply request he provide a few examples of really intelligent people founding a religion speaking metaphorically who were taken literally.
He’s just trying to be kind, but he’s wrong. Like everything else, it took all kinds. Many not even knowing they were founding a religion, that work being done by their admirers and followers, then later by tyrants expressly imposing their own versions as dogma to control the adherents.
Same as it ever was.
I think most founding religious leaders were astute. To me it appears they wanted their words to be taken at face value. They said what they meant and meant what they said.
On the other hand I once perturbed a minister by pointing out that a specific piece of text written by Paul clearly said that while the guide lines he was providing seemed good to him he did not wish anyone to claim that these were commands. That more than enough of those already existed. In other words there were other ways of doing it that were acceptable. Since the minister claimed these were the inerrant words of God he had an issue.
So the central message of Buddhism isn’t “kill or be killed”?
I love the guy, and he is still hilarious today, but I think he is kind of gotten drunk on his own celebrity worshipers. The first way to show your own ignorance is to claim whoever disagrees with you is stupid.
Now, Derek! I won’t watch it again to confirm, but seems to me he was quite specific about who he thought was stupid,
And so can you.
Who the hell is Derek Bobo? Are you still not able to find the “Reply” button at the end of each and every comment?! I definitely remember you complaining about your inability to comment on other postings a while ago. But now that it’s back and once again available (not that it ever really left) you seem unwilling or unable to use it.
Talk about STUPID!
This is stupid.
Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!
Wise and very funny!
Ahhhhh, the Brits…..
yeuhhhhhhh..
They had it all (the world) and was able to pizzzzz everyone off enough to lose it all , most importantly the fine folks that created the states of America.
Cleese is entitled to his little island and opinions.
He had to take a swipe at FOX. Cleese, I fart in your general direction!
Yeah, you’re right, it was too easy. Saying fox news is a news show is like calling the Muppets dangerous propaganda… oh wait, fox did actually do that.
Honestly I did not think the Parrot Sketch was half as funy as this one:

Ah, Is this the right Website for an argument?
I’ve told you once.
always look on the bright side
Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse
When you’re chewing on life’s gristle
Don’t grumble, give a whistle
And this’ll help things turn out for the best
And always look on the bright side of life
Always look on the light side of life
If life seems jolly rotten
There’s something you’ve forgotten
And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing
When you’re feeling in the dumps
Don’t be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle, that’s the thing
And always look on the bright side of life
Come on!
Always look on the right side of life
For life is quite absurd
And death’s the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow
Forget about your sin
Give the audience a grin
Enjoy it, it’s your last chance anyhow
So, always look on the bright side of death
A-just before you draw your terminal breath
Life’s a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life’s a laugh and death’s a joke, it’s true
You’ll see it’s all a show
Keep ’em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you
And always look on the bright side of life
Always look on the right side of life
C’mon Brian, cheer up!
Always look on the bright side of life
Always look on the bright side of life
Worse things happen at sea, you know
Always look on the bright side of life
I mean, what have you got to lose
You know, you come from nothing, you’re going back to nothing
What have you lost? Nothing!
Always look on the right side of life….
Nothing will come from nothing, you know what they say?
Cheer up you old bugger, c’mon give us a grin!
There you are, see, it’s the end of the film
Incidentally, this record is available in the foyer
Some of us have to got live as well, you know
Who do you think pays for all this rubbish
They’re not gonna make their money back, you know
I told them, I said to them, Bernie, I said they’ll never make their money back
Post o’ the Day (brought to you by those fine folks at Quaker Oats) goes to msbpodcast.
The rest of you? Let’s not bicker and argue over who killed who.
For heaven’s sake, people. He’s a comedian not a philosopher. But if you like his humor, see his recent “Alimony Tour.”
Off topic, I know, but I think worth looking at.
A recent link took me to the 18 Feb edition of the OnLine Mail (I know, I know) and, what I find to be, a disturbing image of our Commander-in-Chief.
Toward the end of a series of, frankly, adoring images of Mr O’Bama is a shot of him descending the steps from Marine One in Los Angeles. Two Marine guards, standing at rigid attention, salute their C-in-C who appears to be returning their salute. But look: Is he saluting with a single finger? Is he saluting with his pinky???
We all know how Barry feels about the military but that seems a bit disrespectful even for him.
In fact, after hearing how he wants to gut the Marine manpower levels, I’m surprised the soldiers are not giving him a one-fingered salute. And I don’t mean the pinky.

Editors: How about giving us a way to post/suggest these things without going off topic?

I think most founding religious leaders were astute. /// I agree, with note following.
To me it appears they wanted their words to be taken at face value. They said what they meant and meant what they said. // Yes, I agree as a beginning bias, “but” I’d like to see a matrix of founding leaders and what they said with an analysis of whether or not it was to be taken literally or not. I again from a general bias not a concluding thought think that most of what strikes us as not to be taken literally is from the followers and institutions arising after the “founders” and as corrupt as any other human institution. Again, I’d like to see it all charted out.
Whole lot of stuff in the bible (Old Testiment?) that if metaphorical doesn’t make any sense at all? But even Jebus quotes, while kinder, kinda like the day after a horrendous drunk, are hard to take literally. Turn my cheek?==who ya kidding? Feed the poor?==I’m a Republican! and so forth.
AGAIN, I think Cleese was just trying to be kind. If you don’t agree with a basic tenet, call it a metaphor.
/// Yeah, many people will apply the words/intent of any founder in their own way for their own reasons. But your minister was not a founder of whatever voodoo you were engaged in. People of independent mind will always draw the ire of those in charge. So like Gods they are.
Should I watch the video again to confirm just what it was/who it was that Cleese was calling stupid? Parse the comedy from the honest thought? Nah. I’ll go look at that other video Cursor linked to, I’m sure its good.
What is my favorite sketch? There are so many. The Spanish Inquisition is near the top for everyone. I do like the Weasel Brothers in Court. Every time they visited John Paul Sartre’s House. Every fight between the Ladies Groups? Time to watch the series again.
Bla. Bla. Bla.
Man! I just hate stupid.
Before you start rambling on about biblical crap (or your own personal political hero), maybe you’d like to find a dictionary and look up the word: COMEDY!
I saw that skit. Linked to it last month so I wont here.
Keep your eyes on your balls.
I can remember back when Cleese was actually funny.
Apparently, a lot of people who are extremely lacking in humor watched this video, which is pretty funny to me.
If I were John Cleese, I wouldn’t be famous.
Amazing how some of these debates rage on. It’s really very simple: anyone who actually says there is something so important that American need to reduce their quality of life is either uninformed, stupid or evil. They’re denying the unarguable purpose of this universe. There truly is no counterpoint.
Like John Cleese says, you can’t take even HIM literally. Years ago was an invited speaker at a large event for our company, a data storage company. He started by saying, “I’m not sure why you invited me. I know less about storage than anyone else in this room.”
I loved the answer to the last query. It would also explain Pauly Shore. I recently saw several minutes of “Bio-Dome” on This-Tv network. Several minutes of it, was all I could take, of a horrible ripoff of “Dumb And Dumber”. Shore is nowhere near to actor that Jim Carey is. But having connections in Hollywood, he gets to act no matter how bad he is. And probably doesn’t have the brains to realize how bad he is at it. And it’s easy to be a standup comic, when your mother owns the club you start out in. So in spite of all the box office flops. he continues to get opportunities to fall harder. He won the Razzies twice, as worst actor.
Thank god, he didn’t get the part on the Tv series “Big Bang Theory” of Leonard. Fortunately, someone on the show had some sense. Pauly Shore could never play a “nerd”. He’s just not smart enough to learn all that scientific dialog.
