LOS ANGELES (CBS) — When you head down to the beach for a little fun this summer, county officials want you to leave the pigskin at home.

The Board of Supervisors this week agreed to raise fines to up to $1,000 for anyone who throws a football or a Frisbee on any beach in Los Angeles County.

In passing the 37-page ordinance on Tuesday, officials sought to outline responsibilities for law enforcement and other public agencies while also providing clarification on beach-goer activities that could potentially disrupt or even injure the public. The updated rules now prohibit “any person to cast, toss, throw, kick or roll” any object other than a beach ball or volleyball “upon or over any beach” between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Exceptions allow for ball-throwing in predesignated areas, when a person obtains a permit, or playing water polo “in or over the Pacific Ocean”.

However, during the winter off-season, the new rules will be relaxed.

Officials warned that any activities that could potentially harm “any person or property on or near the beach” should not be allowed during the peak summer season.

Permit=tax.

    I can’t say that I disagree with this fine. Footballs and Frisbees can really hurt, the way some a-holes throw them. They’d probably outlaw boomerangs too, if those were more plentifully sold in the US. The same likely goes for those Lawn Darts, that became notorious for impaling childrens’ heads. Very bad idea for a recreational toy. But they were sold for a time. Along with very dangerous 4th of July fireworks. Another bad idea, for total amateurs to play around with. So laws have to be passed to protect morons from themselves, and the rest of us from them. And still, every year I wonder if I should stand outside with a water hose? Just in case a neighbor’s illegal skyrocket comes down on my house or car. There’s always some fool nearby, who can’t live without being a fire bug. And no law against it, is going to stop their fun. And most of them don’t even know why they’re celebrating the 4th. Thanks to popular media, who hates to educate anyone about Colonial American history. Because they might realize how much of their rights, their government has taken back, since then. Never mind not be able to throw a damn football on a beach.

    Glen, football and frisbees are as dangerous as lawn darts? Have a clue.

    I’m sorry but I don’t see why sane people would want to go to this community to have fun or live. I can see goofy people going there to get wasted but that’s about it.

    Anyone actually read the article? It says they’re lifting the ban. Not imposing it.

      The original article is as written above, the link now takes you to a different article that states they have changed their position….

      When you shine a light on cockroaches, they tend to run.
