The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was released today so I went to my local Verizon store to check it out. Unlike some cell phone users I actually use it for a phone and I like a phone with high speaker volume. Don’t bother with this phone. The Galaxy Nexus has really low volume. It’s so low in fact that it has to be some sort of bug. So it might be fixable. But I wouldn’t bother to look until it’s fixed.
Phone had 4.02 on it so it is today’s release of the OS.
I was also interested in the bigger screen. The screen is longer but not wider than my Droid X. The extra length however is mostly used to draw buttons on the screen. Some apps make the buttons go away using the extra space. I was expecting the screen to seem bigger than my droid X but it seemed the same size. It was a pretty screen.
Android 4 seems a little awkward to use. I think it needs to mature, say 2 more releases to get it right.
I did however get to play with the droid Razr which had the loudest volume of any of the phones. I like being hands free without bluetooth. Just using the speaker phone.
Of course the government wants to take that away too now.
I won’t bother.
What is this supposed to be. Humor? A lesson in how not to right a product review/commentary? A 12 year old reviewing a phone? I’m sorry, but I have to wonder if the person who wrote this actually graduated from elementary school.
At least the spelling isn’t horrendous.
Gods… and I misspelled ‘write’… I’ll just blame it on autocorrect and crawl into a corner now.
You must be new here. Marc Perkel wrote the review. Never expect wisdom from him whenever he writes about technology.
Ironically, he is the webmaster of Dvorak.org.
A post by Marc Perkel is almost always complaining about something and at least half the time he is wrong about that thing and refuses to admit it.
This is a blog, a blog where I can reply/vent with short comments. It isn’t even like other blogs where I have paragraphs of comments and data to support my ideas. This place doesn’t seem to care so why bother? 🙂
As for the reviews I go elsewhere for them. Most times DU is late anyways 🙂 It’s great they bring it up and add their opinions on it but it’s baseless as it’s usually from a single, personal use/observation. Anything more detail and technical and you’ll be regretting you’re here.
Get an iPhone. Apple still has 12-18 months lead over anything Android.
Maybe in 2013 will the Android camp have as polished. I tested android and Apple at the store and while android is functionally equivalent for practical purposes, it clearly doesn’t have the polish and smoothness of the iPhone
Note. To Marc Perkel. There is a key. It is on your keyboard. You need to find this key. It is between two keys. On the lower row of keys. Between the M and the “.” keys. You need this key. What was the name? Of your middle school English teacher? Did you pay attention long enough? To even find out?
“Phone calls are crisp, and the speaker phone is fairly loud.”

I’ve had one for a couple of weeks and the volume is fine.
Just got the GNex today. The volume level issue is not related to the volume rocker bug that was recently discovered and patched. I am also surprised that the volume levels that the GNex produces are so low. My very used and very loved Moto Droid is very loud and clear. This is an issue that I’m sure will also be addressed soon. If not officially, then by third party developers. Not an issue that I would pass over this fantastic phone for. It’s about the only flaw I can find. And Dallas… You’re a bloody moron.
We all thank you for helping to debug Android. Let’s see how it’s coming along about this time next year.
Ice cream sandwich needs work. Maybe JellyBean or Krispy Treats ?
I hear tell that the Jitterbug is loud.
Might want to switch to that Marc.

Anyone ever think this guy might be old and deaf?
…on the other hand. Many iPhone 4S phones suffer from “staticgate”. Mine included.
The 1st thing I noticed is that the GNex speaker is very weak – YouTube, GTalk Video Chat, playing an MP3, ring tones, – all are very low, so low yes – maybe it is a bug, hopefully that’s the case and not just a really weak speaker for which there won’t be a cure.
The Galaxy II has a decent speaker (not an OG Droid by any means but ok, this thing is super low).
If you want a phone with a great big screen and nice loud volume, just get an HTC Titan.
At 4.7″ its the largest one out there and the quality is really nice (better than the nexus pentile OLED) and it doesn’t have the Carrier IQ spyware/rootkit installed for your (lack of) privacy.
Volume of its speaker is very loud, and the earpiece speaker volume is high also.
Whats more, a removable battery and wide range of cases and accessories make the Titan a no brainer if you want a great phone.
The only issue I have with the speakerphone so far is that Youtube videos aren’t loud enough. Talking using the speaker and listening to music with the speaker are plenty loud.
The speaker volume is low on it. In the apps market there is a free app called Volume+ which works to enhance the volume a bit. I’ll be using that until they release a bug fix. Overall the phone is fast, very responsive and a nice phone. A little bit bigger than what a I was expecting. The screen is nice.
