Surprise!

No one will receive the $25 million reward for the capture of Osama bin Laden, say U.S. officials, because the raid that killed the al Qaeda leader in Pakistan on May 2 was the result of electronic intelligence, not human informants.

The reason is simple, say officials involved in or knowledgeable about the hunt for the world’s most wanted man: the CIA and the military never had an al Qaeda operative as an informer willing to give him up. Instead, what killed bin Laden was electronic surveillance, and an operational mistake by one of his closest associates.

In previous manhunts, such as the capture of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein or the killing of his two sons, U.S. intelligence and military commandos had the help of insiders and human sources. In each case, someone received millions of dollars in reward money for their efforts.

During all the years the trail went cold, the CIA had been unable to develop a human source inside al Qaeda or inside their support network. Several former intelligence officials involved in the hunt for bin Laden said developing a spy inside bin Laden’s inner circle was never very likely because of the level of commitment his followers possessed.

No informants? Sure you don’t want to step forward and claim that prize? OK, great! We need to make that down payment on a new chopper anyway. According to CNN, the Reward for Justice program has paid out more than $100 million to over 60 people since its creation in 1984.

My linked article is just too good.

Cornell West and I had the EXACT same epiphany. “But it became very clear when I looked at the neoliberal economic team. The first announcement of Summers and Geithner I went ballistic. I said, ‘Oh, my God, I have really been misled at a very deep level.”

    Amen.

  2. morris says:

No one here beyond Hoover economics, I see.

Oh well, the topic was interesting; but, since no one knows anything about that, either – you may as well return to whining.

  3. Animby - just phoning it in says:

The part I like is that we supposedly had a CIA observation post on his Paki compound for NINE months.

Yet, in his “60 Minutes” softball interview, Poor Barry complained he was very tense when he ordered the Seals in because he wasn’t certain bin Laden was in there! Has there EVER been another prez so disrespectful of his intelligence sources?

He should be careful. They took care of Kennedy, they can take care of him. Of course, even the CIA would probably fear a Biden administration…

  4. two to the head says:

Wait. I thought TORTURE got us the information. So the guy who administered the water boarding should get the 25 mil. Or maybe Rumsfeld should get it since he approved it. Or maybe Bush should get it, or Cheney… or Condi…or…

  5. plarsen says:

Something with better odds than the lottery:
    1) Find out about rewards still being offered (“rewards for justice” website)
    2) Use google earth/maps to look up somewhat isolated villas around Pakistan
    3) Send in guesses in the form of names and addresses to the authorities

I reckon the odds are good… You can improve them by looking close to main cities and government installations

  6. Ah_Yea says:

Yes, two to the head, you are right!!

“The WikiLeaks documents provide still additional evidence that intelligence gained from CIA detainees not only helped lead us to Osama bin Laden, it helped us disrupt a number of follow-on attacks that had been set in motion after 9/11,” … “The files show that prisoner Abu Farajal al-Libi, al Qaeda’s No. 3 and a close aide to bin Laden, first disclosed the terrorist master’s special courier to the CIA. It was the agency’s ability to find and track the messenger that ultimately led a team of Navy SEALs to bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where he was killed early on May 2.” … “We learned a tremendous amount about the operation, not only in Afghanistan but the organizational structure and how they were operating outside the immediate combat area, for example in Europe,” said retired Brig. Gen. Thomas L. Hemingway” … “There was a lot of actionable intelligence that was developed down there for a long time,” Gen. Hemingway said.”

  7. Buzz says:

How much of the downed helicopter will the saved reward pay for?

  8. Dallas says:

Congressional Puke’s credit Cheney for bamboo shoved under fingernail and 24×7 barrage of Barry Manilow songs technique.

I dispute their claim the money should be distributed to the top 1% of Americans.

    # 5 ReadyKilowatt said, on May 20th,
“Off topic: Why can’t we post with HTML anymore? Instead we get broken links. Surely there’s a better comment system (not Discuss) out there.”

You’re correct. Even the <a href src=” code is changed. How annoying.

  10. bobbo, how do you know what you know and how do you change your mind says:

#6–Animby===what you sayin’ Willis? The report I saw said the CIA had the compound under observation and saw shadows of a tall man but never saw OBL. You got anything different? Why all the hatin?

#15–Pedro==”I really don’t know who’s worse: Dumbya or Obamessiah.” /// Now why is that? Who is worse–the person who initiates a dumb ass program, or the person who continues it? Well, on second thought, I guess that is a puzzler.

    Who stopped Torture?
    Who wants Universal Healthcare?
Who wants to keep MediCare and Soc Sec?
Who wants to tax the super rich?
Who want to control Wallstreet—(OK, that one is questionable.)

Its remarkable so many people can’t think past the fact that both Parties are corrupt, inept, and self dealing and can’t get to which one is still worse than the other.

Its remarkable so many people can’t recognize the Dumbo’s are remarkably the same over the past 20-30 years==not an organized party but a tent so large it cannot be managed or led. The PUKES however have gone TeaParty: out to destroy the New Deal Safety Net.

    Reality.

xxxxxxx Now bobo: Its remarkable that YOU ……….

  11. Animby - just phoning it in says:

    # 16 bobbo, “The report I saw said…”
Isn’t that part of the point, Bob? They’ve had weeks to consolidate their stories and they still can’t agree on one version!

    Jeb Bush for Prez!

  12. bobbo, err is human, to admit it is devine says:

Animby–have you got anything different? Looks to me like you heard the report that the compound had been under surveillance for 6-9 months and YOU JUST ASSUMED they saw OBL. Obama said they were not sure OBL was there but took a risk. That is consistent with what I’ve seen reported from 3-4 different outlets, probably all from the same AP wire report, as I posted. In a vacuum, hard to believe someone would live in a house for 9 months and never get in front of a window. Easier to believe he really wasn’t under 24/7 observation and that he was pretty careful.

So–what is your source for this supposed conflicted story other than your loose thinking and refusal to own up to it?
