It’s been 10 long years…

The mastermind of the worst terrorist attack on American soil is dead, almost 10 years after the attacks that killed more than 3,000 people.

President Obama announced the stunning development during an address to the nation late Sunday night from the White House. “Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of Al Qaeda.”

Osama bin Laden — the longtime leader of al Qaeda — was killed by U.S. forces in a mansion outside the Pakistani capital of Islamabad along with other family members, a senior U.S. official told CNN.

U.S. officials have taken custody of bin Laden’s body, Obama said. No Americans were harmed in the operation, he added.

Hundreds of people arrived at the White House late Sunday night and chanted, “USA! USA!” They then chanted, “Hey, hey, goodbye!” in reference to the demise of bin Laden and then spontaneously sang the national anthem.

“This welcome news is a credit to our intelligence efforts and brings to justice the architect of the attacks on our country that killed nearly 3,000 people on September 11, 2001,” said Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, the ranking Republican on the Homeland Security Committee, in a statement issued Sunday night.

Do you remember where you were September 11, 2001? May 1, 2011 is another day we’ll not likely forget.

It remains to be seen what effects this will have on relations with Pakistan and other Middle Eastern countries. Up-to-the-minute updates from CNN can be found here.

These jerks attacked my hometown. I live in a suburb of Washington D.C., and have family and friends who work in the government in different jobs.

I was in still in school when this happened, but on an off day. My mom called saying that people in her office were freaking out. I flipped on the TV a few min before the second tower went down.

After that it was like an airshow in the sky everyday. That is what hit me the most. I have never seen so many jets. Then and in the months afterword when an idiot private pilot would violate the numerous restricted flying zones around the city.

Especially in DC, where all the pols are live during the week, the Air Force WAS NOT going to miss an opportunity to put up planes. The first night Bush II went to Camp David I could see maybe 50 helicopters and could hear lots of jets from my front yard. Then as the his copters came through the coverage peeled off so they could station themselves up ahead.

I’m sure it sounds stupid, lots of helicopters and jets…

  2. Glenn E. says:

Yes I remember 9-11. And I thought it was a little strange that Bush II was as far south as one could possible be in the US, visiting a grade school. Then so guy whispered something in his ear, and he continued on the charade of caring what the children were learning that day. And only a few minutes later, left the school to an undisclosed locale. But it seemed to me like it was planned in advance, that he should be out of harms way, that morning. As if they were aware that some attack was planned that day.

And I’m still not 100% convinced that it was the passengers trying to take back control of the 4th plane, that caused it’s terrorists to crash it. There was fighters up at that time. And the take down order was a little fuzzy. Maybe they were, and maybe they weren’t given the go ahead. How fortunate some of the passengers decided to fight back at the moment. But was that good cover for a missile strike? We may never know?

Oddly enough, some time after this crash, airlines were going ahead with policy to prevent people from using their cell phones, during flights. Apparently for safety. But their use in that case, apparently didn’t effect the navigation of the plane. And tipped the passengers off as to their fate, if they did nothing. So why change the policy now, when it was a very good thing back then? Did the passengers “mess things up”, too soon?

Maybe the powers that be preferred that the plane had been taken down, by force, a few miles shy of the White House. Rather than in some remote northern woods. So now they’re making sure passengers don’t mess things up in the future.

Anyway. Bin Laden is dead. That’s gonna fix everything, right? Don’t think so. We’ll still be funding the military with hundreds of billions, every year, to battle somewhere else in the world, over control of the mineral wealth they’re sitting on top of. Whether it’s oil, coal, gold, diamonds, uranium, whatever.

Nations like Nepal were allowed to fall, to the Chinese or Russia, without us even lifting a finger to protest. Nepal had no material wealth. Just one of the world’s oldest and respected religions. But nobody in power politics gave a hoot about them. We only defend our oil laden friends, and Israel. So the Reds were allowed to swallow up Nepal. And the Dali Lama now lives in exile. Now we hear more about extremist Muslims. And hardly ever anything about Buddhism. Just not enough militarism in that belief system, to suit us?

I guess we only respect religions that like to blow things up, in their spare time. And who build expensive temples all over the world. And destroy those made by others, who they don’t like.

  4. Special Ed says:

We have obviously lost a major buyer of sheets and table cloths.

  5. ggore says:

OK, time for the conspiracy theory-makers to get busy. Where is the body? Have we seen a body? What/who does the body look like? Bin Laden? Was it really his body? Why will the body be buried at sea where no one can/has/will ever be able to see it? And on and on and on…….I’m sure Adam Curry, Republicans, and others will deny this ever happened.

  6. JohnnyBGoode says:

Can we please bring the troops home now? Or are the demoncats vying for top hawk against the repugnicans?

  7. jescott418 says:

Too bad we could only kill him once! I give credit to all the service men and woman who have fought for this day and those that have died trying.
This should be a day to put away Political views and rejoice as American’s that 9-11 has been revenged. But I think its far too early to say Terrorism is dead. This may only enrage Muslims to come forward and join terrorist groups. This is closure for many but it is not the last chapter on the war on terror.

  8. Dallas says:

Congrats to Chief of Armed Force and Pirate Hunter extraordinaire , President Barack Hussein Obama !

  9. Luc says:

    “Up-to-the-minute updates from CNN”

So, like, they’re going to report on his body’s putrefaction state?

The guy is officially dead, end of story.

  10. Alan B says:

    #3 Glenn E.,

Nepal fell to China? Are you talking about Tibet?

  11. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

A black guy finishing off a lazy rich white guy’s job. Again.

…9/11/01 I was at work, and started receiving email to get to a TV. A couple hours later I dug up the WTC websites, trying to figure out how many people worked there, and freaked out to learn it was about 25,000. Went home at 1pm, loaded the cars up with gas, and stayed glued to the TV until late into the night…with a lot of beer. Found out later a relative (pilot for major airline) was in the air at the time, ended up landing a full plane in some shithole city somewhere.

  12. Animal Mother says:

    Show me Osama’s death certificate!!

  13. chuck says:

So apparently Osama was hiding in Pakistan the whole time. I guess we invaded the wrong country.

  14. Marc Perkel says:

I want to see the long form death certificate.

  15. Mr. Fusion says:

I was working on some papers at home while the 2 y/o was watching Barney. My wife called to ask if we were in a war, it appeared we were under attack. I turned the TV over to a news channel to see NY burning and no one with a clear picture.

I put the kid on the computer and let her play her game for a while. After a bit I looked at her, engrossed in counting the bubbles and knew this would work out OK.

  16. Hmeyers says:

This is a chance for a clean break.

We don’t need to be in Afghanistan any longer and since US troops are set to withdraw from Iraq at the end of this year, we can bring them all home.

[Withdraw from Germany, South Korea, Japan and the Phillipines too. Time to stop being world police.]

  17. Hmeyers says:

Another clean break: scrap the TSA and eliminate the Department of Homeland Security. We don’t need an expensive police state at home either. [Keep the metal detectors, the do not fly list and some of the effective security procedures, but get rid of the rest.]

  18. chuck says:

Ok, so what will they do with the body?

If they release a photograph, the picture will be used forever by Muslim terrorists as the image of their martyred leader.

Will the body be disposed of in strict accordance with Muslim funeral rites?

Or will they just drop it in an incinerator and discard the ashes?

Or better still, announce that his body has been fed to pigs.

  19. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

    Chuck, go to CNN.com.

  20. whatsit says:

    #21
    out of touch or what?

  21. Rabble Rouser says:

The real way that they got him was with an iPhone, which tracked his location, then BOOM!

  22. JimD says:

I figured Osama wasn’t in any cave !!! And the “Trusted Courier” was probably bringing his dialysis supplies. I always wondered how hard it was to find a 6’6” arab that needed dialysis two or three times a week. Seemed to be Gumshoe 101, so why was “W” and his Keystone Torturers unable to do the deed ? Or perhaps they didn’t want to “Pull the Trigger” …

  23. Skeptic says:

The only way you’ll see the death certificate is if Donald Duck demands it.

  24. JimD says:

Wait to see the Repuke Midgets line up to shake the Troops hands (for the Photo-op), while the other hand is STABBING VETERANS IN THE BACK !!!

    NEVER FORGET !!!

  25. Skeptic says:

    This just in:
Due to budget cuts, the death certificate of Osama Bin Laden will be posted on the government website as 27 individual scans, complete with instructions on how to assemble it in Adobe Illustrator yourself.

  26. Mextli says:

#14 “A black guy finishing off a lazy rich white guy’s job. Again.”

Thanks for the little touch of racism.

  27. Mextli says:

    #28 “NEVER FORGET !!!”

That’s right JimD, I will never forget the Democrats during the Vietnam conflict.

  28. Norman Speight says:

Congress should immediately pass a bill giving 240 years of Solitary hard labour for any journalistic rat-head revealing the name of the man firing the gun which corrected this accident of birth. Knowing what scribblers often are (i.e. hiding behind the claim of ‘integrity’ or some other invented patheticism), we should expect some cretin to reveal this “…in the public interest” as the spurious claim usually goes.
BTW. Will the government now keep the $25 million offered for the deed?
Would seem that either under-the-counter or otherwise this would be a suitable payment for service over and beyond the call of duty.

  29. TThor says:

Hah! Show me the guy as you did Ernesto “Che” Guevara in Bolivia.
This is an attempt of a diversion of the century. Bluff, lies and deception by crocks, liars and scumbags. It is so appalling and so stupid that even CIA could not come up with this crap. Maybe Lucy though….

  30. Smith says:

I am not convinced that any high-ranking Pakistani official knew bin Laden was in this compound. The best place to hide is where you are not expected to be. US intel suspected for four years that he might be there, yet it took this long to confirm.

With no internet or phone to trace and high walls to shield the inside from view, confirmation of who is inside becomes a huge problem. Now it could very well be that some Pakistani minister did know where OBL was, but I think it is a bit premature for some of the TV talking heads to be claiming that the Pakistan government had to know.
