I’m just about ready to stop watching Judge Napolitano on Fox Business. Its getting tiresome the arguments that tax = slavery. I guess as a “true libertarian” he must necessarily contest the concept of the social contract. Yes, I’ll just take my “income” and give nothing back for it. Actually, its too bad there was not a choice: the unregulated frontier. Imagine if we all did have a real choice? Don’t like paying taxes: fine saddle up and mosey on west.
All these theories and schools of thought are beneficial as TOUCHING STONES to keep in mind as one addresses the freedom of individuals and the needs of society. When ONE any philosophy is embraced to the exclusion of all other concerns: you got stupid on the hoof.
I’ve never studied flat tax. I can see graduated flat tax. It does make sense for “the working poor” to pay “something” so that idiot LIEberTARDS will stop braying about people with nothing paying nothing. A minimum amount and that assumes ALL TAXES are rolled into the notion. It does all come back to theories of social justice and social good and social utility.
You know, the Laffer Curve posits the maximum efficiency of tax at 70%.

#44, Start your own business and find out for yourself. Each one purchased, if over 6,000 lbs, can be depreciated (sometimes fully depending on the final cost). On top of the regular depreciation, you get a bonus depreciation of $25,000 for the heavy vehicles.
That depreciated value comes off of my taxable income. If you reduce your taxable income to 0, you pay no taxes.
This is what happens when they teach consumerism in school instead of economics and free enterprise.

Funny, but it’ll never fly. Flat taxes and VAT are all regressive taxes. They do not consider the economic engineering that budgeting allows with income taxes. For example, 401(k)s lose their appeal to consumers, stock brokers and fund managers lose the customers, and companies lose the investors.

#43–jonesy==Thanks for the link. Not too quick on the uptake: calling one program “true” is a false distinction as if other programs are false or defective whereas the truth is all programs have a set of characteristics and results. Its the results that matter, not how true something is.
I think libs want a graduated income tax because higher taxes are more able to be paid by folks who have higher disposable income. One thing that should be the same is capital gains. No reason for passive income to be taxed at lower rates than working income==just more class warfare already won by the rich by the illiterate poor voting against their own self interests.
The bottom line will always be to match expenses to revenue or vice versa. This simple rule was violated by Bush drug program and two wars. Go to war: raise taxes to pay for it. Obama violated it via stimulus that was mostly tax cuts and pork and no stimulus at all.

My data says that taking everything from the top 10% isn’t going to be enough to balance the budget. You can only do that once anyway because the ones that survive are going to do something to keep on surviving.
That means we either make massive cuts, and even the GOP is not trying to make enough cuts to actually balance the budget, or we all find out what it’s like to go over Niagara without a barrel. Considering the wisdom shown among the posters I’d lay money on the later happening.

I seen lots of commentary that says program cuts and a return to Clinton era tax policy ((and I’ll add with a heavy dash of tax enforcement and loophole closings)) would return us to solvency fairly easily.
I would also consider changing the entitlements but also note there is value in getting old folks retired as young as possible: it opens up the work force for younger people for instance.
