Troops? What troops?

The U.S. may consider sending troops into Libya with a possible international ground force that could aid the rebels, the former U.S. commander of the military mission said Thursday, describing the ongoing operation as a stalemate that is more likely to go on now that America has handed control to NATO.

The use of an international ground force is a possible plan to bolster the Libyan rebels, Ham said at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

Asked whether the U.S. would provide troops, Ham said, “I suspect there might be some consideration of that. My personal view at this point would be that that’s probably not the ideal circumstance, again for the regional reaction that having American boots on the ground would entail.”

Ham also disclosed that the U.S. is providing some strike aircraft to the NATO operation that do not need to go through the special approval process recently established. The powerful side-firing AC-130 gunship is available to NATO commanders, he said.

The civil war has cut Libyan oil output by 80 percent, a senior government official said on Thursday, as rebels and Gadhafi’s forces traded charges over who had attacked oil fields vital to both sides.

Wed Mar 23, 11:44 am ET
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama Wednesday categorically ruled out a land invasion to oust Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi as coalition forces launched a fifth day of air strikes against government military targets in the North African nation.

I’m not interest in “I’ve got mine” mentality.

The interest on the debt is going to kill any and all lofty ideas.

Considering we live in country of fat people driving gas guzzlers that neglect their health … I figure they all could go on a diet and make a few sacrifices and we’ll go along fine.

No one wants to make these sacrifices and there just isn’t a bad place to start. I’m sick of seeing 450 pound people that eat themselves to death and sit in motorized roller-carts at Walmart.

Any environment that produces that kind of waste that 60% of Americans are obese is due for diet. And no, I won’t be paying for their healthcare.

It is time for people to get their shit together. And if everyone gets a bit of trim, property prices and inflation all even out. Rich people are few and far between and act as a diversion. They will beat the system anyway, it is the rank and file that matter.

  2. HMeyers says:

The Chinese officials when talking with Mexican government officials refer to us as “your well-fed neighbors up north” … well you and I both know what that means.

And other countries view the American worker as lazy.

We do not have to be that way. Most of us were descended from grandparents that worked hard for a living.

And we can be those people again.

The soft and pompous “I can’t do it” American mentality of helplessness will not pave the road to a better tomorrow.

And it isn’t “I can’t do it” — it is “I’m afraid to try”.

You don’t get out of this mess until people realize they can adapt. Adaption is what humans do best and is why we are the top of the food chain.

R and D voters have been destroying our country now for decades. Adults with the wisdom of decades of observation arguing about how the deck chairs should be rearranged only make themselves appear to be idiots. Young people may be excused.

Logically, the only potential solution is voting for a third party. A third party may break the status quo. Voting for the same two parties obviously won’t and therefore is idiocy.

Pull the handle for D or R at the national level at the next election and YOU are the problem.

HMyers==I was off googling and refreshing my memory. I even recalled a few posts of my own lambasting a few retards who posted just as you did: “I don’t have the answers, but the Democrats had a super-majority (60 senators) and the House and the Presidency and didn’t even pass a budget last year.”/// YOU HMEYERS ARE VERY MUCH MOST OF THE PROBLEM: you see our politics as breaking down/controlled by: PARTY POLITICS! As I intimated, it was indeed the record breaking/setting FILIBUSTERS of the Senate Republicans that stops all the Dem Budgets. The Pukes voted as a unified block, the Dems had a few members voting with the Pukes because they were in red voting districts. HOW DISINGENUOUS of you on both counts: to blame the Dems for not walking lock step according to party politics and then to blame party politics for what ails America. You see your FAIL and the total HYPOCRISY?

Same process as right now: Obama caving right at the start giving the Pukes everything they want, then the Pukes asking for more, Obama caving some more, and the Pukes pulling back some more. Ok, I agree. Obama should fight more—I agree.

HMYERS–are you forgetful, lying, or of the opinion that every party member should vote party line on all issues?

Your two most recent posts above are all irrelevant. Why did you post them? Got a weight problem? Ha, ha. Foolish. You are a better man. Please correct your trajectory and post according to your better angels?

If we took the net worth of the 200 richest Americans and top 10 companies in the United States and gave all that money to the US government … it still wouldn’t even cover the deficit we’ve got for 2011 through April.

That’s a pretty damn sad state of things.

  7. bobbo, Republicans are Killing America says:

HMyers–weak, fail, incorrect, ad hominem. Lets Parse:

Bobbo, everyone who isn’t sincere /// BS self adoration on your part. Childish. I am totally sincere.

looks away from what I say and starts into the name-calling when I start mentioning some of the quagmire this country is in. /// How is that relevant at all to what I posted? What “names” did I call you? Disengenuous when you are, hyocritical when you are? Ha, ha. Very weak to call these JUDGMENTS backed by analysis with a weak baby whine of “don’t call me names.” Why not address the substance of what generated these VALID JUDGMENTS? You post the Dems should have passed a budget because they had a “super majority.” Yes they did and could have passed if every single Dem had voted lock step with the party line======BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT CONGRESS CREEPS ARE SUPPOSED TO DO. They are supposed to represent their districts. How should a creep vote who is from a heavily red district? There is your abyss HMyers. Keep staring.

As Frederich Nietzsche said, the strong don’t look away from the Abyss when the Abyss looks back at you. /// You did. I don’t.

I didn’t see a single constructive or factual element in your last comment …/// Well then put your bi-focals on and read it again as emphasized just above.

you just started into name calling. /// Liar.

Anyone can devolve into mud-slinging, it isn’t the mark of a higher primate. /// I agree. Thats why there is a whole lot of substance that you try to ignore and the “name calling” is none of the sort. Foolish, you are capable of doing better. Stop being lazy. Address the issues I raised or be doubly guilty: of the charges I make and the applies to yourself criticisms you made. I don’t think you can do it. Vanquished. Ha. Ha.

  12. Publius says:

These points are the keys to understanding the interest in Libya:

    – Libya has oil.

    – Libya has significant unexplored land, likely to contain still more oil.

    – Gaddafi is an uncooperative/unpredictable ruler, with regard to continuing good deals to access his oil to the 3 traditional empires of Italy, France, USA.

    – The uncooperative ruler would increase his power, and increase his ability to annoy the 3 empires, further if he is successful in squashing the insurrections.

    – The Libyan insurrections are seen by the 3 empires as the opportunity to “repair” the uncooperative leadership of Libya

    Last but not least:

    – U.S and British internal documents stress that the “virus of nationalism” is the greatest fear, since independent leadership of Libya might breed disobedience to the 3 empires. Talk about ironic! Nationalism means independence.

The 3 empires disapprove of independence strongly! Now is the time to show the strong pimp hand.

  13. Rick says:

They have oil, send in the troops!

  14. bobbo, Republicans are Killing America says:

Publius–your borrowed analysis is muddled. Aiding the removal of dictators to any populist movement is aiding nationalist movements and is a DIRECT THREAT to the stability throughout the Middle East. The US action in Libya puts pressure on the US to take the same action everywhere else.

No, the analysis “must” take into account America still pays lip service to preventing genocide and that lip service pulls us into conflicts we would rather avoid.

I thought US should have stayed back “teaching” the Arab League and Nato to pick up the Bill for these adventures. Should have waited even more to get Egypt to send in the ground troops needed to have the whole thing over in one week instead of the stalemate that could result?

Powell Doctrine still not being followed to our great disadvantage.

  15. Buzz Mega says:

Couldn’t we just LOAN the rebels an aircraft carrier?

  16. David says:

The latest news says that Libyan rebels have accused NATO of being too slow to act – and asked them to suspend operations unless they “do the job properly”. There seems to be another conflict waiting to happen even within the alliance forces.

  17. Mr. Fusion says:

When it is about disposing a dictator and restoring democracy it will always be a good cause. When it becomes about oil, then it becomes a bad cause.

  18. Mr. Fusion says:

    #72, Meters,

I’m not even done. Most of the TARP $$$ went to foreign banks. More than 50%.

    http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/42944/20100812/tarp-bailout-banks.htm

First, I wish you were done. Most of the TARP money did NOT go to foreign banks. A lot did, which was all in the interest of rescuing AIG. No foreign bank received any direct money.

While I disagree with bailing out AIG, I do recognize that they had way overextended themselves insuring those “credit swaps”. The foreign held bonds were jumbled up with the American and there was no way to split them up. If the TARP funds only paid for the American “credit swaps” then the results would have been much worse, financially and politically.

Second, your link says nothing of the source. It points out that the only money that went to foreign banks went through the AIG. That means you didn’t even read your link and directly lied.

  19. G2 says:

#82->See #18 and #37 above. You support Obama’s war in Libya against its sovereign government without congressional approval as per Section 1, Article 8?

  20. G2 says:

    #84->Make that Article 1, Section 8.

  21. Mr. Fusion says:

    #84, G2

Where in that post did I mention anything about going to war? I’m sorry reading isn’t your strong point.

  22. G2 says:

#86->Exactly my point and thanks for confirming it. We haven’t gone to war.

We’ve bombed a country that was no threat to us. That makes Obama a war criminal.

  23. Mr. Fusion says:

    #87,
I see comprehension is also one of your weak points. There is a United Nations mandate that the US is required, by treaty, to uphold.

Coincidentally, that is more than the invaders of Iraq, Panama, and Grenada had.

  24. G2 says:

#88->Treaties do not override law. The president took an oath to uphold the US Constitution, not the UN charter.

And I don’t defend Iraq, Panama, or Grenada either. Illegal, all of them, too.

Obama is a hypocrite and a liar. In 2007 he knew it was wrong. Now it’s not? What’s the difference between now and then? Do the ends justify the means? How can you seriously defend one but not the others?

  25. G2 says:

Neoconservatism in the United States is a branch of American Conservatism that focuses on foreign policy, where it defines national interests to include ideological interests e.g. the defense of other nations with similar ideologies for geopolitical purposes, proposing to use American economic and military power to bring democracy and freedom to other countries.
