A story for the ages.

An award-winning sportswriter has pleaded guilty to running a prostitution operation, saying he needed the extra money to make up for a pay cut because of the downturn in the newspaper business.

Kevin Provencher, 52, Manchester, N. H., admitted in Salem, Mass., Superior Court Friday he recruited and received financial support from prostitutes working out of hotel rooms in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

He was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison and fined $5,000 on the prostitution charges and also for intimidating one of his hookers from testifying against him.

  1. Kent says:

Reporters have a lot of first hand knowledge on prostitution. They prostitute the truth to please their editors and publishers. I know, been there.

  2. Ah_Yea says:

    This is news?

MSNBC, CNN, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, etc. have been a’whorin for the Dems for years now!

  3. B. Dog says:

Dang. That wrongdoing violates the sportswriters creed.

  4. Anonymous says:

Now that’s dedication. He could have just got another job like everyone else, but no, he chose to risk it all so that he could continue writing for his paper. (Although he was a sports writer, and dumb enough to get caught doing this, so he might not have many transferable skills)

  5. Cursor_ says:

    Writers, prostitution, John C. Dvorak…

Say no more, nudge nudge wink wink!

  6. Guyver says:

So consensual sex between adults is legal… but if money is involved you go to jail. Hooray for the Nanny state.

  7. Nobody says:

#7 – I think the problem is that there is a contract, negotiations and a client ends up getting screwed – but no lawyer is involved (unless you are seriously kinky)

  8. Guyver says:

    8, Nobody,

    Ha! 🙂

  9. ray says:

    #7,

Not only that, but if you video tape it, it’s not prostitution, it’s now porn, which is legal. Cheers.

Almost right. In pron the actors don’t pay each other. Except Charlie Sheen.

  11. Cap'nKangaroo says:

#10 ray I believe LA county was pretty successful running the porn movies out of town by prosecuting for prostitution and pandering.

This does remind me of when I was in college in Raleigh, NC and a statehouse file clerk was arrested for prostitution, with the acts occurring in the statehouse. She said she did it to supplement her $12k a yr salary. This was back in the 80’s.

  12. MikeN says:

He looks just like another guy pictured on this site. Can’t remember who it was, but I remember I said he looked like Terry McAuliffe.

  13. admfubar says:

and now we know the rest of the story…

  14. 1873 Colt says:

Let’s see…. When somebody needs “extra money”, instead of selling some stuff on eBay, or selling your car, or cutting back on the restaurant meals, SOME people naturally start a brothel.
    Of course.
I work with “award winning journalists”, and most of them are stunningly stupid.

  15. Paul Gillin says:

The source story notes that the guy is “a four-time winner of the New Hampshire Sportswriter of the Year award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.” Surely he could have parlayed that kind of recognition into a more constructive form of business.

  16. JimD says:

“Creative Writing” Journalist no doubt !!!

  17. Talk about running a sinking operation
Reminds me of management in the auto industy proudly announcing “Boy Did I Get a Deal at X Newspaper” – were the tables over turned on the “experts’ in the negotiation process
Then again eBay just announced final value fees on shipping costs for eBay sellers so has the new industry really learned anything from its whole experience ?
