I’ve been intrigued by the various new controls in Photoshop that allow me to exaggerate photos in new ways to make them oddly compelling. Over the next few days I’ll be posting a few of these creations.

I feel…..oddly compelled. Kind of a video game vib, maybe Fallout Madrid.

Rich textures with vibrant colours. A subject which is powerful yet not imposing. It brings to mind an updated reimagining of…… Nahhh just kidding. PS filters are like your dick, fun to play with but few others see the beauty.

  4. jamesfritz says:

    Nice Photo.

I recommend that you use the vibrance adjustment layer. Bump up the vibrance, but don’t mess with the saturation too much.

I use Lightroom. Also have Elements. What I find is that I don’t have enough time and often I can’t decide what I want to do to the images. I have over a hundred presets, and do enjoy the results.
Still dreaming of a 5D. Got almost all the L series lenses I need for a while.
Also don’t have time for my Amateur Radio hobby, and building several QRP CW kits I have here.
    That’s what retirement is for.

  7. bobbo, what's the point here says:

Worse than a tease. I don’t see anything in that picture that could not be achieved since PS 1.0? Maybe a shortcut in a drop down menu?

But every photobug I know is happy to show/tell how they did it. There is one about 10 part series on how to use PS about 5 min each where the narrator relates every effect to what a terrible person his ex-wife is. total crack-up. I found it on google years ago, can’t find it right away now.

The only photobugs who don’t tell how to achieve the effect are those who want to sell their photos==and even half of them will tell you if you ask.

So, I’m asking: Before/After? Steps along the way? Hints/clues?

  8. bobbo, google it, GDI! Just google IT!!! says:

A nice giggle even if you don’t care about photography/photoshop at all:

  9. Zybch is annoyingly pissed off says:

John, you can do exactly the same stuff in the free Windows Live Photo Gallery from microsoft.
Why does everyone believe they need an overpriced bloated piece of crap like photoshop/slop to do the simplest image adjustment tasks?
Its exactly the same as idiot artists (and blowhards) insisting they need a stupid mac computer in order to ‘be creative’.

  10. admfubar says:

want some real effects.. try G’MIC Grey’s Magic Image Converter
    http://gmic.sourceforge.net/

a stand alone command line version and a plugin for gimp

  11. Rick says:

Speaking for myself to a degree, but also people who do what I do (pixel monkeys). Photoshop is an amazing tool. It has also been tended very well over the years. That isn’t to say it does magic, but it does keep track of a VERY big number of things with an elegance that programmes that “can do that too” simply can’t match. They’ve been great at Adobe in seeing how their programme is used and incorporating “invented” methods into actual tools with some simplicity and control. There may be many programmes that can do all the same things, but you can do the same things with filters and film and light too…but we don’t anymore for a reason.

    That said…

Most people do NOT need Photoshop…because for their use it is in fact a bloated waste of functionality. Then again, most people don’t need Word for the same reasons.

Just had to defend Photoshop…for when it IS useful.

  12. AlanB says:

Very cool. Looks kinda like an HDR image such as those that can be found in the Flickr HDR pool. http://bit.ly/fl3a

  13. howard beale says:

this one is not to my taste but I look forward to your next post
    I use PS every day.

  14. deowll says:

Thank you for posting the picture John. I would be grateful if you posted more shots.

The colors are interesting. I suppose it would be more trouble than its worth to you but I’d like to see the uncompressed picture.

It is shocking what having a large screen high resolution monitor can do for a graphic even with nothing else being done.

  15. Semantics says:

If you set out to make a steaming pile of shit then you did a great job.

  16. Greg Allen says:

I don’t understand the push-back on “Photoshopped” pictures.

I like this picture John submitted. Sure, it’s different than a photograph but so what? It looks nice. That’s all that matters, IMHO.
