Yeah, we realize not many people have CDs anymore (I know I don’t, so I can’t vouch for the effectiveness of this technique), what with iTunes, BitTorrent, etc. But in case you do, and they’re scratched, you’ll want to try this. Follow the steps exactly or you could ruin your disc. And your pickle.

True, not that many CDs any more. But I discovered this technique works equally well to restore the finish on an iPod. So, if you’re iPod is a couple of weeks old and starting to lose that new sheen, give it a try!
PS. I can’t vouch for the effectivenss of this technique on iPhones or iPad but I feel confident it will work just as well. Lets us know.

I’ll tell ya what…my preference is for CDs for a number of reasons. One, they sound good. Two, can’t lose them (or the right to listen) with a hard drive crash and setting up backup stashes all over the web is a pita. Three, they’re all legal (unlike torrents).
BTW, Best Buy is selling vinyl albums.
But remember you didn’t buy the original CD – you only licensed the content (for a single non-commercial listener).
Then surely if you have the proof of purchase from the cd case you can just go into Walmart and take another disc off the shelf?
I used to use a couple of seconds in the microwave as a secure delete for CDRs of confidential stuff brought in by PHBs for disposal.
Now I have a shredder that does CDs as well. I miss the pretty sparkles!
I buy all my music in the form of CDs. Then when I get it home, I rip it to iTunes and then never look at it again.
Therefore, my CDs never get scratched because I only use them once and then put them away with my other backups.
Itunes? What’s that? Some kind of music rental system from Crapple? Sorry, I can’t go there.
Anyone who cares about their rights and about good sound has CDs. Sure, I rip some to a portable player for listening while not at home, but I want my actual physical proper copy of something that I pay money for. Particularly when dealing with the shysters in the music industry.
Vinyl is actually even better in some aspects and instances. Sometimes not. But the new vinyl that is being sold at Best Buy is either something I already have or something I don’t want. Oh, and I much, much prefer not to buy anything at Best Buy. Heck, even Walmart is better!
Okay, now then, for repairing scratched CDs (and DVDs). I recommend Johnson Paste Wax, applied as directed on the can. Deeper scratches can sometimes be tames using tooth paste rubbed with a finger, but this can also be destructive. One of those nice things about vinyl is that it will play even when damaged.

The joke was over when I saw the “Repair CD” button on the microwave. I chuckled at that… the rest was a waste of time.
I never went to CD, but I tried it on an 8-track tape and it works just as well!
Music? Who buys music anymore! With nothing but Rap Crap, Country Western and Celine Dion, I listen to all the good stuff I bought as CD’s and ripped lossless years ago and backed up to three different hard drives. But then, I’m just old fashioned.
I had a hard drive die the other day. I was going to send it in to the manufacture since it’s under warranty, but I think I’ll give this a try first!
Can I still use the “Repair CD” button on my microwave, or do I need to buy a newer microwave with a “Repair HDD” button?

Here’s another tip for scratched — copy your CD.
In my experience, 90% of the time your computer can read audio CD when it skips on your player.

You are so mean about my ripping my music to itunes. I rip to the highest quality mp3 I can.
I have hearing problems, so really don’t notice that the quality is a bit less than CDs. And Apple doesn’t rip me off for music. I only buy CDs from people I hear live anyway.
Most of what I listen to is podcasts like TWiT, formerly Cranky Geeks, some science fiction podcasts and audible. Listen to Leo tell you about how great audible is.

The microwave has become my favorite way to terminate a CD/DVD. I prefer to wait till dark and turn out the lights.
OMG… this is a blatant violation of the MDCPA! Those scratches are secret copy protection. Viewing this video makes you a criminal since it teaches you how to bypass the RIAA’s technology.
