I remember when I traveled from Vancouver (Canada, that country to the north of the US) to Seattle when I was kid we used to have to keep a watch our for speed planes … are they not common anymore?
We have those in Blighty, only helicopters! ROFL

We have them in Canada to all so minus the missiles. You know you “could” be monitored when you see white lines on the road thy use them to tell how fast you are going.
Safety becomes a revenue model.
We used to have these here in Gitmo Nation Down Under. There are lines marked in the road and a guy in a plane with a stop watch who calls ahead to a cop waiting ahead. They can pull in a lot of people in a short period.
Been replaced by camera’s now here.
We’ve had those out in the middle of no where New Mexico since I was a kid and I have never heard of anybody getting a ticket as a result of an aircraft, I was told that it was too expensive and that the signs were there just to scare you since there is only 1 cop per 50 miles.
had this in ohio years ago.. it became to expensive for the state to do, aircraft fuel, maintenance, plus the added lines needed on the freeways to do the timing of the speeders,and the need for good weather for the lighter planes made for a shortage of funds. (not to mention all the tax breaks givien to the companie operating in the state made for far few funds to use) plus Cincinnati Microwave (think radar detector maker) had a transponder detector for sale, all state gov planes were required by law to use transponders. made it easier.. 😛

I can see that using the choppers cost to much but with cheap drones with tiny fuel bills I can also seeing it making a comeback.

They still use air radar on the QE2 highway between Edmonton and Calgary in Alberta Canada. Just don’t speed between the big white lines.

It may not be a joke. That area is fairly rural, so speed could reasonably be determined by aircraft using VASCAR.

Happens fairly frequently here in Nebraska on the Interstates. Slow, low, State Patrol plane flies over the Interstate timing cars between white stripes space .25 mile apart on the road and radios the dozen or so hidden troopers parked at the next on-ramp.
Assuming a simple speeding ticket takes 10 minutes total, they can catch 60 people an hour and have a dramatic show of force that gets motorists in both directions to slow down.
That’s how they do it in Iraq.
Remember those speeding reporters who got shot up by the Apache?
