Above you can see the Super Bowl commercial for Chrysler, giving quite an inspiring look to the city, despite some of the communist/marxist art in the video, which might have been included to appease the unions.

This video provides a look at the stray dogs situation in the city. A warning to our readers, the video can be quite graphic and upsetting.

  1. Demos says:

It is sickening how the corrupt Repukes have just sold this country down the toilet with the utmost contempt for the citizens. Too bad if you’re colored or needy, the Returdicants want you to go die.

Repukes are responsible for Detroit. The disgusting squalor is, to a building, their fault.

  2. Lou Minatti says:

    “Repukes are responsible for Detroit.”

Last I heard, Detroit has been run by Democrats for generations.

  3. Demos says:

    “Democrats”

It has not escaped my attention that the Republi-filth took it upon themselves to ruin Detroit as punishment for thinking independently.

  4. Animby says:

#2 Lou – save your breath. Demos has his head so far to the left he can’t see straight. He’s spending more time thinking up pejoratives than thinking about what he’s saying.

Do you know what the Latin word for left is? Sinister.

  5. MikeN says:

    You guys can’t grasp sarcasm?

  6. moss says:

The Eminem commercial was the best of the lot. Too bad Gasparrini can’t get his head past 1929.

Oh, and trying to run a Democrat city in what often is a Republican-run state government ain’t the easiest job in the world. Ask anyone in NYC. It’s like trying to drive your hybrid car through a traffic jam of Model T’s.

  7. Olo Baggins of Bywater, Imported from Detroit says:

Lots of blame to go around about Detroit’s situation, saying it’s the Dems is pretty stupid though…Chicago seems to be doing ok with that machine, and other cities under Dem control are doing fine as well.

Detroit is going through another rust-belt phase in part because they are still largely a one-industry town. As goes the auto industry, there goes the economy of the city and the state.

I’ve driven the highways shown in that ad lots of times, and it’s better and worse than that….depending on where you look. Across the street from the theater is Comerica Park (Tigers) and Ford Field (Lions) but they won’t show them because of the names, I suppose. Nice part of town, lots of nightlife and daytime fun too.

I don’t know how that ad plays elsewhere, but all my SE Michigan friends loved it.

  8. Rob says:

I loved it. From Detroit suburbs. Still live here.

    It hurts every day…

    I will however….Stay.

  9. E@$+ C0@$+ Cr@ckP0+ says:

The Heaviest steel makes the lowest gas mileage.

Japanese are more innovative. Detroit screwed everyone with their lousy products.

  10. Derek says:

Anyone can run a city during good times. It’s when the bad times hit that you can see what areas were ran efficiently and what area were exploited. Detroit has been running on borrowed time for a long time.

  11. Detroit failed to evolve beyond industry. The fact that people blame Detroit for people all across America buying gas guzzlers is obscene, ignorant, and shows there true stupidity. If I make crap and you buy it…. How can you blame me for making more crap. Its both parties (not-political) fault.
We don’t beg for a thing, and work hard for everything we own. We believe that we can rebound. But not through politics, but through the people actually stepping up and working to repair the city instead of complaining that nothing ever gets done.

Don’t confuse Detroit with the Auto industry.

  12. jescott418 says:

Detroit is a perfect example of how Unions destroy a town. If Unions are so great, how come Detroit is a ghost town? The problem with Detroit is that this town never understood competition. They embraced the Democrat’s thinking they would somehow save them from themselves. Chrysler was not saved, but simply bought by another Union relic Fiat which has its own Union troubles. We keep delaying the fact that wages for these low skilled jobs in assembly are shrinking.

  13. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

jescott, that may wind up being the most ignorant post of the week, unless alfred gets motivated. Congrats, you’ve set the bar nice and high.

  14. the haunted sheep says:

I am not sure what the point of posting the two videos together is? To somehow prove detroit sucks? of course it does but why go out of your way to prove it? I can do that with most places. Kalifornia is a great example. Looks good enough on the surface but is really a communist hell with virtually no business left. Why bother?

  15. usa1 says:

The “communist/marxist” art is really depression era/WPA art. Get a clue.

  16. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

    Hey pedro:

Demagogue: one who seeks support by appealing to popular desires and prejudices rather than by using rational argument.

  17. Li says:

#17 Yeah, 20th century realism is an art style. It was, indeed, used by the communists in their propaganda, but it was also used by the US in it’s propaganda, and had a lot of popularity outside of the field of agitprop. Just because the art is of that style doesn’t mean that it’s communist.

  18. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

Maybe these appeared here once before, but they’re worth seeing again.

  19. Buzz Mega says:

I favor the raised question “How could citizens of Detroit be the ones who decide for us what a well-designed car should be?”

Obviously, they’re capable of massive quantities of sheer ignorance.

What are the cities like that Audi, Benz, Lexus and Bimmer designers vote in?

  20. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

Pedro, sorry, you’re still in second place.

  21. bobbo, words have a meaning and a context says:

50,000 “wild” dogs? Seems like a lot, at least a breeding population. I like dogs but their impact on the city must be huge. I’d like to see a Nature or Nova study on these effects. Meanwhile, shouldn’t trained crews be catching or killing them to clear the streets? Cats too?

Saw some special report on urban land being returned to bare land. Seems like a real opportunity for some urban planning/park development there that I assume will be missed.

    The “future.” What a concept.

  22. 1873 Colt says:

    Detroit: Model US city.
    Hahahahahaha

  23. 1873 Colt says:

    Oakland: Safest city in America.
    Hahahahahaha

  24. Jeff says:

Anyone notice that the video about stray dogs in Detroit carries a warning about graphic and upsetting images but the video of an Egyptian teenager getting shot by the cops doesn’t .

  25. john Henry says:

They say they have “been to Hell and back”

I would agree with the to Hell part. How can anyone say they have recovered?

    John Henry

  26. aslightlycrankygeek says:

I stayed downtown Detroit for a week as part of a missions project. The hotel I was staying in was armed robbed while I was in the lobby. In the parts of town I was working in, every other building was abandoned. Some parts of town are so bad that even the gangs don’t hang out there – there is not enough happening there.

You can look at history and see why the town is like this. It is not really up for a political debate unless you are looking for another excuse to spew animosity. They were hurt by the race wars when all the money left town, then by the collapse of the US auto industry, and now by corrupt politicians that people keep voting for. Gary, Indiana is another example of this. This certainly has nothing to do with Republicans, and while Democrats are in charge, it has much more to do with corruption and people voting on the color of a politicians skin than the politician’s ideology.

  27. Yankinwaoz says:

The coach had put together the perfect team for the Detroit Lions. The only thing missing was a good quarterback. He had scouted all the colleges and even the Canadian and European Leagues, but he couldn’t find a ringer who could ensure a Super Bowl victory.

Then one night, while watching CNN, he saw a war-zone scene in Afghanistan. In one corner of the background, he spotted a young Afghan Muslim soldier with a truly incredible arm. He threw a hand-grenade straight into a window from 80 yards away. Then he threw another from 50 yards down a chimney, and then hit a passing car going 80 miles per hour.

“I’ve got to get this guy!” coach said to himself. “He has the perfect arm!”

So, he brings the young Afghan to the States and teaches him the great game of football …….. and sure enough the Lions go on to win the Super Bowl. The young Afghan is hailed as a hero of football and when the coach asks him what he wants, all the young man wants to do is call his mother.

“Mom,” he says into the phone, “I just won the SuperBowl!”

“I don’t want to talk to you,” the old Muslim woman says. “You deserted us. You are not my son!”

“Mother, I don’t think you understand,” pleads the son, “I’ve just won the greatest sporting event in the world!”

“No! let me tell you,” his mother retorts. “At this very moment there are gunshots all around us. The neighborhood is a pile of rubble. Your two brothers were beaten within an inch of their lives last week, and I have to keep your sister in the house so she doesn’t get raped!”

The old lady pauses then tearfully says, “I will never forgive you for making us move to Detroit!”

  28. Yankinwaoz says:

If you can invest an hour of your time, please listen to this episode of This American Life. The episode looks at the NUMMI plant, a joint venture between Toyota and GM, and how GM and the union refused to learn anything from it.

It really makes it clear why Detroit’s way of making cars was doomed. Trust me, the union guys carry plenty of blame too.

This American Life, Ep. 403 “NUMMI” from March 2010.

    >> despite some of the ‘communist/marxist art‘ in the video, which might have been included to appease the unions.

Wow. That’s a dumb thing to say!

The 40-hour work week. Weekends. Ending child labor. Overtime. Safety rule.

    So commie.

  30. Robocop says:

The best depiction of Detroit was from Robocop.

Watch it again and you’ll see. It’s on Netflix streaming.
