Sony unveiled the successor to the PSP at its PlayStation Meeting in Tokyo today. While Sony spokespeople continually referred to the device by its codename of Next Generation Portable (NGP), it’s not yet clear whether this will be the name of the device when it is brought to market.

Here’s what we know so far:

  • Quad-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU with an SGX543MP4+ GPU
  • 5″ OLED touchscreen (960 x 544)
  • 5″ touch pad on the rear of the device
  • Two “real” analog joysticks (unlike the “nubs” on the PSP)
  • Front and rear cameras
  • 3G, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and GPS
  • Six-axis motion sensing system (three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer), Three-axis electronic compass
  • A new physical media format to replace the aging UMD
  • It’s “as powerful as the PS3”

  1. cgp says:

what! comparing a mobile gpu with a current gen console gpu?
hell silicon tech moves fast, otherwise typical tech reporter
ignorance. ps it has quite a high res, so small screen pixel
count cuts only so much. ps3 cell so underused.

  2. Zybch says:

“It’s “as powerful as the PS3”

My sweaty dangly bits its as powerful as the PS3!
Why do these idiot marketing a-holes say this kind of crap?
    Some other sony gems:
It will take 10+ years for Bluray DRM to be cracked.
    RIIIIGGGEEE RRAAACCCEEEERRRRRR
“Sorry, its physically impossible to have rumble and accelerometers at the same time in the new controller.
And of course the Sony Stupid Piece Of Shit That Doesn’t Fucking Work – http://tinyurl.com/StupidPieceOfShit

  3. ECA says:

bETA will rule the market, its a better format and we can CHARGE TONS, for anyone trying to use it…
Then VHS was released FREE to the market, and KILLED BETA..

  4. What? says:

Big battery? User designed hardware-accelerated apps possible? More capable than Nexus S?

If not, it will be another Sony total failure!

  5. Publius says:

Is it really as powerful as a PS3? PS3 uses several IBM processors. The world’s fastest supercomputer was, for a while, built using PS3s hooked together into a cluster.

Without some sources to check, I’m not believing it.

But the specs look very nice despite the nonsense.

Here is a free MIT course I studied which explained a lot about programming the PS3 using concurrent techniques.

Can you spell iPod touch with buttons?

  7. FRAGaLOT says:

how can it be AS POWERFUL as the PS3, when it’s using an ARM processor? Regardless this looks sweeter than the PS3 it self. Wonder if it still plays old PSP1 titles?

  8. Floyd says:

Why should I care? I already have a compact cell phone, and don’t need the flashy “features” (which I don’t use) of fancier cell phones.
Instead, give me a cell phone whose battery lasts for many hours, not a cell phone that plays games.

  9. MRN says:

With a 4-5 hour battery life, Sony also crippled the PSP2 with non-user replaceable batteries due to fears of piracy.

7 FRAGaLOT Wonder if it still plays old PSP1 titles?

Uhmmm … “A new physical media format to replace the aging UMD” I’m guessing that, like the White album, you’ll be buying new formats every few years.

  11. Bastian says:

What a waste of electrons to read about something that may or not be released next holiday season. God – Sony has become such a waste. I think they need to work on their stupid-ass earbuds first among other ridiculous failures in the here and now.

  12. Hothr says:

5″ touch pad on the rear of the device

Anyone else excited about this point? I’ve been waiting for someone to do this for a while. It would let you interact with the screen behind it so you don’t obstruct it with your finger.

  13. jescott418 says:

I am not a handheld gammer. But this too me beats the Nintendo DS 3D hands down! I would much rather spend money on this then a lame gimmick 3D DS.

  14. Buzz Mega says:

Oh boy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy ohboy oh boy oh wait.

    So what?

  15. DUH says:

“next gen portable?” Are you serious? Sony just rev’d a product with parts and a new exterior design. There’s nothing next gen about it. It’s a wonder Sony still exists. Lame.

  16. anon says:

    But what does it do?

  17. GregA says:

The cell is what…. 5 years old, and the ps3 has a crap ancient video chip in it, of course a handheld is faster than the obsolete (never relevent really even) ps3.

And for the third year in a row all the big box retailers are eliminating their blu ray movie selections after christmas….
