Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot at a Tucson event Saturday morning; five others have been reportedly killed.
Arizona state Sen. Linda Lopez, who is at University Medical Center in Tucson, said she spoke to Giffords’ parents and that they said she is in the emergency room undergoing surgery and is in very serious condition…
At least four people are dead, University Medical Center spokesman Darci Slaten said. They were among five to seven people who were being treated.
The NBC affilliate in Tucson reports that the FBI has taken over the investigation…
Giffords, 40, a Democrat, serves the 8th Congressional District…
Giffords was re-elected to her third term last November. She was a member of the Arizona House and Senate before coming to Washington.
She first won election to Congress amid a wave of Democratic victories in 2006. In November, she edged a tea party favorite.
There never is a shortage of violent, ignorant thugs in this land who fervently believe they can enforce their political will by force of arms.
For goodness sakes – can’t we ever put rabid partisanship aside? The shooter appears to be mentally ill, what many here derisively call a “loon”, and his illness – not his politics – are what drove him to this senseless act.
Another Day, Another Anti-2nd Amendment PsyOp.
Unless its “No Agenda” there is an agenda.
Ah_yea: Jesse Kelly and takebackthe20.
OvenMaster, so what you’re saying is that she had it coming?
It’s going to be like this:
First they’re going to blame muslims and we’ll see small, muslim owned shops being vandalized and even the Sikhs are going to be affected ’cause them white folk only need for reference is brown skin and a beard.
Then they’re going to find out it’s a Right wing white guy who can’t stand the fact that someone in politics if having the guts to scold people like him for being racist pricks who still don’t know they need an education if they want to get a job.
And finally Right wing media is going to say it’s Obama’s fault just because he’s black and the murder of that congresswoman has nothing to do with them spewing bile, hate and xenophobia ’cause that’s the only news that won’t affect the sales of Johnson and Johnson’s family products, Miller lite beer and boner pills and thus won’t affect TV ad sales.
I’m glad he didn’t have time or enough ammo to shoot himself.
As usual the left goes crazy and tries to blame the Tea Party and Sarah Palin for the actions of some loon. If you can’t win with logical arguments, then demonize your enemy. Nice going children.
Sarah Palin and the Tea Party have never condoned violence and have been civil and rational with all of their arguments.
As for the gun argument, the event was being held out doors. If the nut job drove his car into the crowd and killed a bunch of people, would you be calling for the abolition of cars?
#36–Pedro==well done excellent post regardless of source. Given your are the source: kudos.
I suppose its “fun” to pick but one thing out of the many things that must come together to create such turmoil.
I’m thinking its mostly mental illness, with the complication of Sharon Engle “Second Amendment Remedies” type criminal nonsense of the Tea Party in Arizona, and as always, add a dash of religion in there somewhere-being a Holy Warrior to some cause or another==but mostly mental illness. Not politics. Not changing the world, just acting out.
Add this event to the “con” list of the availability of guns and to the list of not arresting people, including political candidates, for rank and obvious incitements to violence. Its not free speech. Its a crime and nutballs do respond to it. Still lots of room between incitement to violence and hard hitting outrageous unpopular speech.
The details never matter.
Federated…nice addition to the ignorant post collection.
Hey OLEO, typical comeback of the very sort I described that tend to regurgitate ignorance and stupidity here!
Keep up the good work of justifying my comments;-)
Thanks!
BTW OLEO! Baggins was a warrior you obviously are NOT!
After watching the shooters YouTube postings I can only conclude this guy was a member of the Crazy as Crap Party and a big fan of that guy who keeps talking to him even after the radio is turned off.
Anyone trying to use this tragedy to score political points needs to take a step back and think about what they are doing.
One other thing. . . does anyone recognize the “create your own currency” language this guy keeps using? It sounds like some sort of twisted self-help system gone horribly wrong.
#45–Hey Federated==lots of work on that website. Looks like some good stuff there to read, to one end or the other?
Lets Hypothesize that EVERY political assassin is a liberal demoncrap. Does it follow that gun policy is therefor correct? No.
It only takes imagination and intelligence to “argue” any connection that is desired.
Is the harm caused by gun availability “WORTH” the benefits? The harm is on display right now. Can you list for us the benefits of gun ownership?==Not in a theoretical vacuum but a few hard examples? eg: Taking guns to protect yourself against unreasonable search and seizures at the airport? eg: Taking guns to protect yourself against unreasonable stop and search sobriety check points. eg: using guns to shoot out observation cameras.
There is a heavy obvious down side to gun ownership in america. The upset is purely a debatable and flimsy on the surface argument.
Silly nonsense is what causes too much human misery. Connect the dots.
Fed, your comment is one of the more partisan comments here, complaining about partisan comments. You win the day’s hypocrisy award.
Congrats!
Another whacko with a gun.
1) Where do these insane people obtain these guns? from insane gun dealers?
2) Where do these insane gun dealers get their gun dealers licenses? …?
3) Is there no way to effectively deal with this problem without altering our Constitution and thereby only “allowing” criminals to obtain guns?
Oh, you like Glenn Beck. Sorry I even replied to you.
(nutbag)
Doesn’t matter what we say here.
All the lefties have made up their minds – it’s Palin/Beck/Tea Party/NRA/etc.’s fault.
Righties, too have decided – it’s just another crazy guy who is probably an Obama/big govt. lover.
The Right Media (Fox News) and the Left Media (everybody else) will probably come down along similar lines.
Nothing’s gonna change. Move along.
Bob who asks===sadly, while the Sup Ct “could” develop greater limitations on gun ownership by reading in the clear intent of the militia language, it has gone the other direction: interpreting the Const as if the militia language was not even there.
Legitimately, the only way the USA is going to have a rational gun policy is a Const. Amendment. Short of that, only a very activist Sup Ct could reverse the current development of the Second Amendment. If beloved Presidents being shot (Reagun and Kennedy) doesn’t turn this corner, I don’t think anything else will.
USA was born with the curse of slavery and the fear of Great Britain. Slavery was overturned but gun fetish has burrowed its way deep within our psyche. Probably already more people have died from illegal gun activity than in the Civil War? Culture and History, for good and ill.
#54–Lotsa==Its my impression the “lefties” haven’t placed blame. The ones doing it are the “righties” claiming the lefties are blaming the righties. Such hair triggers ready to go. We all know of the “get out the vote” efforts both partys make. I’m seeing now the “get out the blame the other side effort” in full bloom here.
Maybe “I” was the first one to make a charge against the right with my Sharon Engle comment but even that allowed merely for the setting of the environment, not an identification of the shooter.
as stated: details don’t matter. Details matter of course when discussing the details of this incident, but this incident and its detail is but one data point in the summing up of the relevant/contributing issues.
Silly Hoomans, too many with guns, even more with bad ideas.
#56–Federated==of course you stand with the Republican Party in its avid/unreasonable support of expanding individual gun ownership.
Or are you against individual gun ownership? Is your linked website meant to be merely a huge ironic slap in the face to the NRA?
Explain yourself. ((ha, ha–like that will every happen))
Fed…I give you credit for admitting being a partisan. But, you know that Beck is about two clicks away from flinging his own shit at his viewers, right?
Olo–I watched GB last night for about 15 minutes before surfing. I can’t remember what he was going on about “but” he IS THROWING HIS OWN SHIT at his listeners. I guess everyone at the zoo thinks it is funny until it lands on them directly as it has in Arizona this day?
Na, I can’t pull it up. I should be able to this very next day and assume it is because it made no sense that I can’t? I’m stuck on Olbermann’s review of GB using the 3/5th Person standard in the Constitution for Blacks was the South’s effort to get rid of Slavery argument that was also on last night. I can remember that because Olberman made sense of it.
Sense: the framework for memory, its a good thing. Now who was that guy posting about guns on his website? Ha, ha. and yet able to hold a job evidently.
Beck is very repetitive, and uses a lot of ‘inside’ jokes and references (i.e. Van Jones) only his dedicated fans will catch. 15 minutes is about the max for anyone with real knowledge of the subjects he’s clowning about.
This has nothing to do with Sarah Palin, or Republicans, or conservatives, or gun ownership.
This has everything to do with a lone nutjob who was either off his meds or escaped from his rubber room.
Lets not use this tragedy for political bashing of any kind.
#62–Mr Pain, the window to your soul shows an empty room.
Of course this incident has EVERYTHING to do with what you list out, to different degrees, all interactive with lots of other issues too.
Only a partisan tool/drudge/idiot want to simplify an issue down to one isolated factor.
Why didn’t you list: “This has nothing to do with the Vienna Boys Choir?”
I actually caught a very intelligent explanation on Fox News earlier this afternoon about why they were not talking about any other victims of this abomination. Their response to an IM or e-mail about focusing almost exclusively on the Congresswoman was that they had no other names to release or if, by some chance, they did have a name, they did not want to say it until law enforcement had informed the victim’s family.
Man the liberals on this site and elsewhere appear to be enjoying this news.
Things seem to be getting worse lately. Nearby to my locale, some screwball is sending exploding mail parcels to state officials. With the reason being some objection to seeing “Inform Your Government of Any Suspicious Activities” signs around town. I mean, I hardly ever notice them myself. And when I do, I get a bit of a chuckle from that. First, shouldn’t it be obvious that you’re supposed to do that? Or do citizens expect the police to have their eyes and ears everywhere? I think the signs are more to inform immigrates from lands where the criminals are in charge. So reporting their activities, back to them, only gets you killed. But in the USA, the police and feds are 99% honest.
But why a sign about doing one’s civic duty, should upset anyone to the point of mailing small bombs to public officials, is beyond any sane reasoning, I can think of. Fortunately, they’ve only been puny match-head bombs.
Of course, the last time we had a rash of mail bombings (far more deadly) like this. It was the work of a Harvard graduate mathematician, turned violent backwoods fruitcake. Who only objected to ALL modern day progress. Like we were going to unring that bell, just for him.
Where have you been. This happens all over the world, and throughout time. How do you think we got our independence from England.
I like the fact that, unless we have another Jack Ruby out there, we’re going to be able to find out exactly what this imbecile’s views are.
If he is a Palin drone (sorry about the word choice,) he’s going to show exactly what kind of people follow her and drink her vitriol.
If not, then that’ll shut some people up, won’t it?
Face it, nobody’s going to rally round this nut case’s flag.
Killing little girls is not popular in this country. This isn’t some xxx-stan somewhere full of angry mullahs.
I wonder what ideology he’s going to trot out to justify himself. (Of course, he’s bound to get offers of marriage [from both sexes now,] a book contract, supporters from the other nut jobs who support the cause but don’t have the balls, and so on.)
That it didn’t end in a ball of flame with body parts flying everywhere, with his suicide (or two to the back of the head) doesn’t mean that the politicians out there are not going to be a lot more nervous.
I hope that it turns out that the shooting was utterly the product of his deranged imagination.
Gun control advocates are going to get a little more ammo.
But this will change nothing.
We’re not Pakistan; where, when some working-class, religious nut case decides that he doesn’t agree with the liberal politics (he was against the application of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws in the case of a woman who it is alleged had spoken ill of Mohamed*,) of the person he’s guarding, he empties a Kalashnikov clip into the limo he was supposed to be guarding.
Quid cusodiet ipsos custodes indeed.
*) She was probably moaning about the death of a relative at the hands of the Taliban.
