  2. bobbo, on your death bed, what will you remember says:

I sense natural behavior in response to some scent in the candy, or maybe even the color of something that is small and that moves. Ladybudgs are famous for eating aphids–small little things that exude a sugar that ants enjoy eating.

    The circle of life.

  3. Faxon says:

Beetle is trying to eat something made of sugar, but the wax coating makes it impossible for the critter to get a grip on the globular object. Looks like a frustrated ladybug to me.

    Bobbo, we agree on something.

Almost as interesting as a soccer match.

Faxon–ha, ha. Your sense of humor and even good will is appreciated. Good to see your range. I look forward to moving up the Tree of Life with you, finding common ground where we can. Maybe even a few sprinkles would help?

  8. Paranoiac says:

Bobbo, You’re close about the scent! Look up “food grade shellac”. It’s made from a beetle (as is shellac in general). Used to coat certain candies. Ladybugs eat other bugs. I suspect it’s homing in on the shellac, not the sugar.

“beetlejuice” indeed. If we ever needed another reason not to eat candy?

    Its all chemistry isn’t it!

  10. Paranoiac says:

Ah. I looked it up as well – my amazing two-volt brain was remembering shellac being the beetle itself – and my reference seemed to indicate the same. I think your reference is more accurate. (Note to others: It’s actually a secretion of the beetle, not the beetle itself.)

Still, I have to think the ladybug is somehow attracted to the coating, rather than the sugar. That’s just my own guess, however.
