A new iPhone App with the misleading name ‘PatriotApp’ attempts to draw on the power of the patriot movement, turning smartphone users into a gigantic snitch network.

You might think an app with such a patriotic name might have useful functions like a pocket constitution or quotes from our forefathers. But contrary to the services one might expect, this app allows users to report any ‘suspicious’ behavior directly linking them with top government agencies.

Much like the new DHS program ‘If you see something, say something’ this app is meant to turn average citizens into a network of spies feeding information back to the federal government.

Citizen Concepts, a company formed by insiders from DHS, defines the use of such an app on their homepage:

The goals of Citizen Concepts are to:

* Provide instruction and increase consistency in actions while decreasing variance in human behavior to mitigate risk and error
* Increase the quality, procedure compliance, and efficacy of outcomes
* Provide closed network, high-value content information for collection and action purposes
* To serve civil, government and commercial communities entities
* Provide mechanisms whereby events, processes, and performance can be reviewed retrospectively

Citizen Concepts delivers a superior product.

We leverage your existing Blackberry, Android or iPhone platform and drive compliance directly to your staff’s mobile device. No manuals to find, nor forms to locate, no wasted time.

Oh goody!

Thank god, at last we’ll be able to report a pandemic to the Government. Can’t tell you how often I’ve wanted to do that. In fact, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to get this app now. Got two or three pandemics I don’t think they are aware of…

  2. Lou says:

This is an app to find out who is a rat.

  3. foobar says:

Skeptic is on to something. I think we need a Wikileak reporting app.

  4. dittmv says:

Perhaps a few thousand people should put 1600 PA Avenue and the addresses of a few other members of the administration in there for eight of the nine categories and make the thing useless.

Seriously though, in the end this will be nothing more than another black hole for information to enter and never be examined. Something will happen and then something will point back to this and someone will say if only we had the capability to analyze all of the threats.

Look for the government to propagate a new meme. We need more computer hardware to better streamline the volume of information ala healthcare reform.

Obama must believe that the only reason that the East German Police State failed was that there was not enough capability to process all the information generated by the overreaching bureaucracy. If we just had the deus ex machina!

  5. MikeN says:

Why doesn’t it have a section for reporting Nigerian scammers? I want those guys prosecuted!

  6. Buzz Mega says:

Now remember, kiddies; the factoid that conveys how few people have fallen to terrorists inside the USA in the last decade—including those lost in 9/11—compared to, say, the number of people who have died inside the USA in car accidents is no good reason not to spend a million times the effort to prevent terrorists rather than spend effort to reduce automotive deaths.

We need to get our priorities straight: Intimate pat downs are your government’s way of reaching out. Reality has nothing to do with it.

    Do your part.

If you see anything you don’t understand, call Homeland Security.

Remember, your government has your best interest at heart.

  7. ECA says:

Can I suggest something about this TYPE OF APP..

It will also TAKE your info. YOURS..
The odds are that upon using/buying this app, you are giving RIGHTS to the person/group you are sending the data to.. THIS IS NOT 911, who couldnt trace an incoming call, even if there was a 10 alarm fire being reported, or a NUKE in downtown. “Whats your name please?”…

Your phone number, NAME, ADDRESS, and GPS location will probably be sent ALSO..

Then consider these TYPES of app, trojans.. AND I HOPE you REALLY KNOW, who you are sending this data to.

Yes and Yes…. Welcome to the Deutsches Reich.

It’s tempting to download this app and report approximately 300+ past and present government, banking, and corporate ‘officials’. And then Homeland Security would just end up giving them all medals or something for being good little minions.

of course I think that #34 may be correct as well…

  9. dan says:

I thought this was a hoax, but lo! it’s right there in the app store. when do we get our armbands?

  10. Donald says:

    This is a joke, right?

  11. Improbus says:

    @pedro

Your kidding right? Steve Jobs is at the heart of a cult of personality. He should feel right at home in a police state considering how he runs Apple.

  12. jman says:

not sure where all these looney lefties get that this is a conservative or republican thing. There aren’t any conservatives in power right now. I’m conservative and work with nothing but and we’re ALL against this sort of thing. We want LESS govt, not more. The left is the proponent of big government and “regulation”

  13. Improbus says:

You must have been really disappointed in Bush the Lesser since he dramatically GREW the government. Now Obama is doubling down on a losing proposition. We all know this is going to end badly but watching a train wreck in slow motion can be entertaining.

  14. nobodyspecial says:

The panic level colors are of course going to have to change to fit in with Apple’s style sheet. We can’t have orange, red, very-very-red (or whatever they are now)

It will have to be something like, buttercup -> ripe aubergine -> sun-dried tomato. It might be tricky for TSA, outside SF at least, to announce we are going to threat level PIMENTO but they will have to learn.

  15. ZenPirate says:

War is peace, Freedom is slavery, Ignorance is strength…..

  16. RSweeney says:

You libs ready to scrape that Obama sticker off the Prius yet?

  17. pschyotoad says:

Sounds like something out of a SciFi horror movie and it will only get worse. Watch and see

  18. chris says:

I can do a much better comparison than East Germany!

In Venice they have letter boxes built into the palaces so people could turn each other in.

    They look like this: http://www.zormeir.com/italy/mouthy.htm

  19. momander says:

Forget about the app. The real atrocity is how they tortured the English language.

“Provide instruction and increase consistency in actions while decreasing variance in human behavior to mitigate risk and error”

    Ugh!

  20. User7 says:

I’m going to have to increase my data plan to make use of that government waste button.

  21. spsffan says:

    #53 for the win!

Fortunately, I don’t have any type of easily portable device that accepts “aps”, and neither does Mrs. Kravitz.

  22. msbpodcast says:

I ask this question after every election: “Did we elect anybody?

The answer is of course: “yes”.

The conclusion is inevitably: “Then we lost.”

ELECTIONS bring out people who see something to gain by getting elected.

You’ll never get anybody else from the election process.

That would be like expecting people to suddenly fart daisies.

What you get from the distant end of the digestive process is shit. Its always been shit. It will always be shit. It couldn’t be anything but shit. Doesn’t matter what you ate. You get shit.

If you want a fair and representative government, make it like a 4 year term jury duty with the name of ALL citizens picked out of a big hat.

Four years, you’re in and then you’re OUT.

    That gets rid of:
    • lobbying, after all they can’t have a cadre of cronies to payoff, while raping anyone who isn’t “part of the inner circle”,
    • putting in charge idiot lawyers and ex-lawyers who’s only reaction to anything is to pass another law,
    • having idiotic distractions dreamt up by some cadre of cronies to try to make the populace lose focus,
    • pork-barrel politicians,
    • corrupt politicians,
    • greedy politicians,
    • ideologue politicians
    • party-followers (like camp followers of old but slimier,)
    • YES men.

The system has a glaring flaw. Open your eyes.

  23. Ah_Yea says:

Has anyone else noticed the vastly reduced posts since Obama has become GWB?

  24. foobar says:

Check out Team Patriot, the yahoos behind this company. It speaks volumes that they toss out acronyms like DOD and DHS so casually.

  25. gquaglia says:

Does this remind anyone of “Night Watch” from Babylon 5. Who would of thought Obama was President Clark. Let’s hope “Scorched Earth” isn’t on his agenda.

  26. TooManyPuppies says:

Now that the DHS has become our Stasi, it’s time to take a page out of my grandfathers playbook on how he dealt with the previous Stasi in East Germany.

Take names and if you can, photos of the Stasi collaborators. Because there will come a time in the future for a reckoning. When that wall came down, several of those collaborators fell with it, never to be seen again.

  27. Ah_Yea says:

How insane do you have to be to still support this Obama guy??

Everything you Dems hated about Bush, Obama has done 10 fold.

Obama has gone balls to the walls to create a police state and his party, the party of oppression, has gone along with him in lockstep.

The mind boggling dept of corruption, the astonishing naivete, the repulsive arrogance.

Obama lies, and his party lies with him:
“Senate Democrats released a massive spending bill Tuesday that contains money for thousands of lawmakers’ pet projects, setting up a fierce debate over so-called earmarks in the waning days of the lame-duck congressional session. … Critics of earmarks said the bill released Tuesday represents a last hurrah for lawmakers steering money to their pet projects before the arrival in January of dozens of tea party-backed Republicans intent on ending the practice.”

So who has sold out to special interest??

  28. gquaglia says:

    Yes we can!

  29. noname says:

    # 41 pedro,

Maybe you should move to CUBA, as you seem very fond of it’s Health care and it’s rattling neighbors!!

What really sadly funny about you, if you could read English, you would have noticed I never mentioned or referenced CUBA in my post #21!!!

Posted by Pedro, Castro but buddy (# 41 pedro):: “#21 Why? cuba has this in real life, neighbors rattle on neighbors. And since cuba has such great healthcare, this should be a great app.

    Sheeple!”

  30. noname says:

    # 67 pedro,

You really need to work on your English reading comprehension.

Where in my comments do you read anything about Michael Moore?
Where in my comments do you read anything about Obama?

Now, even though you are not asking, yes I did vote for Obama.
Do I think he is spineless, yes.
Do I think him a War Criminal like G.W. Bush, NO.

The president you fond so much for G.W. Bush, is one strange person (as you are); from G.W. unusually imboyant and uncritically promotion of the death penalty and War as a means to solve non-existent problems (IRAQ had nothing to do with 9/11 and finally TEXAS is reviewing the death penalty as unconstitutional because of known cases of executing innocent people).
