Courtney Winkels blows bubbles, much to the consternation of Officer Adam Josephs, sunglasses, who threatens to arrest her for assault..

When he first saw a video of a Toronto constable threatening to arrest a G20 protester for blowing bubbles, one YouTube user was so livid, he couldn’t stop writing comments.

In fact, the man, who uses the alias “theforcebewithme,” can’t even remember writing the specific comment that now has him defending a $1.2 million defamation lawsuit launched by Toronto’s now notorious “Officer Bubbles.” Const. Adam Josephs seeks to compel the Google-owned YouTube to reveal the identity of the person who created and posted the videos as well as any information it has on the 24 other users who made allegedly defamatory remarks. Josephs’ lawsuit isn’t targeting the video that sparked his infamy, but a collection of eight cartoons posted to the popular video website that show a police officer resembling Josephs engaging in abusive acts of power.

The animations depict an officer named “A. Josephs” arresting a variety of people — from Santa Claus to U.S. President Barack Obama — as well as punching a news photographer. In his statement of claim, Josephs calls the cartoons and several comments “devastatingly defamatory,” alleging they have brought him “ridicule, scandal and contempt both personally and as a member of the (Toronto Police Service).” He claims the animations have also resulted in threats against him and his family.

No comment. Har!

  2. NobodySpecial says:

It’s all part of a dirty Canadian plot – they lull you into a false sense of security by pretending that their soldiers don’t have guns and their police are afraid of bubbles.

Then when you have relaxed your guard millions of BC bud crazed hockey-stick wielding 7foot tall lumberjacks will sweep down and eat your children.

That’s why you need a northern border fence now!

  3. Brian says:

The woman cop can cuff me anytime she wants!

  4. Mike in Fort Worth says:

That guy needs to lighten up. I’ve been a cop a long time and you can’t get so upset over basically nothing. I’m not familiar with the laws in Canada but I can’t imagine making that charge stick….and what would be the point anyway. You have a bunch of idealistic young people out there who aren’t hurting anyone. And then when you make a total ass of yourself in public, you want to sue people for making fun of you? What a d**k!

Did you notice the female cop’s reaction to her partner’s threat that he was going to arrest “bubbles?” She looked like she thought he was kidding.

  5. Counterweight says:

The comments made on You Tube are nothing compared to the ones that would have been made by the defense attorney in court.

“…carrying out his duties as a police officer to protect the public,” from soap bubbles.

The lady cop looks like she’s thinking: “Geez – how did I get partnered with this bozo?” When he first mentions arresting her for assault, she turns to him, mouth agape in (?) disbelief.

    Wait – is “bozo” defamatory?
One can only hope… It is claimed he had a Facebook page and claimed his job description was, “I collect human garbage” but when this case appeared on YouTube the description disappeared. (http://bit.ly/b0nhx1)

By the way, the girl was charged with “Conspiracy to commit mischief.” The charges were dropped, sadly. That would have been an interesting trial.

  6. Bob says:

#2, screw a border fence we need land mines and machine gun nests, 7 foot tall lumberjacks are nothing to mess around with! I mean have you seen espn lumber jack competitions? Just imagine 10,000 pissed off lumber jacks throwing axes at you as they flood across the border! Even if you try to climb a tree to avoid them they will just climb up after you using those spike things they put on their feet.

  7. IamKnuckles says:

I don’t see anything wrong with what the police officer did. He asked her nicely to stop and put the bubbles away.

  8. This guy is digging a deeper and deeper hole for himself. In fact what he did was ridiculous and public condemnation and ridicule is in order. We need more videos of police action to weed out these sorts of people. One can only imagine how he would react in a genuinely problematic situation. Poorly is my guess.

If all the snide remarks constitutes cyber-bullying, then expect every blog in the country to be shuttered. What did this idiot expect? I wonder how much money I can make from the cyber-bullying I have had to endure from Mac lovers. I’ll be rich! Rich!

    Well said, sir!

  10. NobodySpecial says:

“what he did was ridiculous and public condemnation and ridicule is in order”

And he did it in while in uniform – representing the people and government of Canada.
We used to have a charge of ‘bringing the uniform into disrepute’, eg if you got drunk while in uniform. It was regarded as a serious offence, it could certainly get you time in the guardhouse.

This bozo brought the uniform, the police service and Canada into disrepute. Not sure you can actually bring the Toronto police and Canadian government into disrepute – there is only so low you can sink after all. But other Canadians might object to being made to look like idiots infront of the world.

  11. Gilgamesh says:

ANOTHER moron goes looking for trouble and FINDS IT! Sorry, I agree with the cop. It’s deliberate antagonism. It is *physical*. It’s assault. Spitting on someone with soap or spitting on someone with spittle, is an active aggression, no matter how wrapped in sardonic bullshit it is. That’s partly too what those kids are there to learn about, the boundary between free speech, ‘fighting words,’ and actual assault. Her punishment should be the blowing of bubbles on her by a frat boy at her next drum circle. My guess, she doesn’t handle herself half so well as the cop. My guess, the frat boy probably stops when asked.

    #2 and #6,

Hahaha im sitting in a law office and I literally started laughing out loud at Bob’s comment. I had such a great picture in my head. awesome

What a total waste of everybody’s time.

He needed to get a sense of humor back then. But now he’s going to have a serious attack of Streisand Syndrome.

EVERYBODY is going to recognize this guy.

When are people going to learn that sometimes, it’s just better to turn the other cheek and let it go away.

Incidentally, if he’s reading these comments and wants some sensible advice, I’m happy for him to contact me.

“Assault me with a bubble”. I ask you.

All he needed to say was, can you be careful not to get it in anybodies eye because it could sting. Then HE’D look sensible and smart and the protester would have looked silly.

  15. Proudtobecanadian says:

Like my name says, I am very proud to be a canadian. Next election, vote for Harper again and see your freedom go away a little bit more.

  16. Mikey Twit says:

Wait! This idiot made his own bed, and now he’s complaining about having to lie in it? I live just 25 minutes southwest of Toronto, and thankfully don’t have to deal with this bozo! Oh wait, I’m gonna get sued now!

  17. Skeptic says:

Read all the “Mr. Bubbles” books!

Another cowboy cop who shouldn’t be a cop.
    Period.

  21. bobbo, to the left and right of Obama says:

When you say “G20 Protester” I think swarms of students rushing a police line throwing stones and Malatof Cocktails. Maybe the chick should have been arrested for not doing her job as a rabble?

Technically correct though and no warning needed to have been given.

AND AS ALWAYS: the cop is just a symptom of the organization that pays him every day. Go up the chain to find the real bozo’s.

  22. NobodySpecial says:

Thank god she didn’t attempt to put a flower in the barrel of his gun. The only solution then would have been to take off and nuke them from orbit.

(Actually as a solution for Toronto that sounds like a good idea!)

  23. spsffan says:

The cop was an asshole, but he was right. If he were LAPD, he would have beaten her severely or shot her.

She on the other hand, will most likely get hit by a bus (or streetcar..it IS Toronto) since she is so out of it she doesn’t realize that they are dangerous. The chick needs drug (and bubble) rehab.

The cop needs to be out there looking for Osama Bin Laden or Steve Jobs or Angelo Mozilo.

  24. Publius says:

    Bubbles for Bullies Day

I smell a new Canadian Holiday.

  25. Steve says:

How can anybody defend this asshole’s behavior ? If he actually wanted her to stop with the bubbles he could have simply told her to do so without the macho I’m-gonna-cuff-you ‘tude. Defending this guy is not just a matter of opinion, it’s prima facie evidence that you support abuse of power by any little weenie with a badge.

  27. Polecat Parker says:

    saliva-bubbles… ewww

  28. Rodrigo says:

He proved insufficient preparation. She is just a child. He could resolved the situation by saying Do not throw soap bubbles. Even the woman officer was surprised with his abusive attitude. He unnecessarily intimated frighten the girl and the voice of prison exposed her to shame. And he still wants the respect of all world? He should be punishable and expelled from the corporation. And pay moral damages to the girl. He’s mental sick – he thinks that he is a Matrix officer – simply ridiculous.

  29. MrZippy says:

    Bubbles EH!

  30. The Lord says:

As some of you know, this happened during the G20, and this story is only one of many stories of police going way beyond what they should have in course of their duties.

In another story, they broke into the house of a married couple, (both veterinarians)with a new born, and woke them from their sleep at gun point… turned out they had the wrong residence.

In any event, the video shows us a pig being a pig, and it would seem we have a sensitive pig here who likes to be a pig, but doesn’t like being criticized on youtube. Poor little piggy, poor little piggy.

    Regards,
    The Lord
