Apple’s iPad will be available in more than 2,000 Verizon Wireless stores starting October 28, the companies announced today.

Verizon will offer three bundles with an iPad Wi-Fi model, along with the company’s MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, a small device that provides access to Verizon’s 3G network. When away from Wi-Fi, iPad owners will need to connect to the MiFi 2200 from the iPad. Verizon said the MiFi’s “cloud” allows it to provide Web access through the company’s 3G network to up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices at the same time.

Those who plan to buy the iPad bundle featuring Verizon’s MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot will need to pay a monthly fee for access. Verizon said it will charge $20 per month for 1GB of data, with no contract required.

Excuse me? Did I understand that right? If you can’t get a decent wifi signal you have to have a MiFi with you to get a connection?

The Tab just looks better and better.

  2. TThor says:

    Gee… as if I care!
Come on guys. This is ‘real news’ belonging somewhere else than a serious place like this… OK?

  3. doughoist says:

Virgin mobile has unlimited 3G access via their mifi for $40 a month, with no contract. My advice is to buy a Virgin mifi and an iPad and not worry about Verizon or AT&T’s over priced service.

  4. madtruckman says:

yeah, the first place i think to go buy a WIFI ipad is the verizon store. Verizon is trying to jump on this bandwagon a little too late…

  5. Dallas says:

Bigger news would be a 7″ iPAD.., actually, smaller news. Sorry Pedro.

  6. chuck says:

    Not really news.

Verizon is simply selling the WiFi iPad bundled with their MiFi mobile hotspot.

  7. Muckdog says:

I think all of this per gig charging is leaving the door open for some carrier to offer an all you can consume option. That’s a market share winner.

    Maybe that’s virgin mobile.

I’m doing the $25 per month via T. For now.

  8. meanmeanie says:

Wow this sounds like a really shitty deal any way you shake it.

Lots of fools with money though.

  9. deowll says:

They want $20 for a gig?

I bought a kindle without a phone connection for a reason. I’m not made out of money. Wifi works fine.

My thought is that everyone who bought/is going to buy this year’s Ipad is going to want to upgrade when the next version comes out. Ditto for next year.

I’m not so happy that you can’t replace the battery or add a memory card. I couldn’t even begin to put my music collection or photos on a cheap Ipad. I think the more expensive ones cost as much as decent laptop and require me to have a $2000 contract.

The lame amount of memory in my kendle works because I’m using it for books only and if it gets full I can delete several books and still be able to download them later should I want to read them again.

    Each to their own.

  10. raddad says:

We looked at the iPad (at BestBuy) and it looked cool. We would have bought one if my wife could figure out what to do with it. We’re not anti Apple (she has a Macbook Pro), but she couldn’t think of a use for it and she refused to buy.

  11. Steve Jobs says:

    pedro does da shwing!

  12. Milo says:

I’m buying one but not with 3G. When your on a university campus: wifi everywhere, it makes sense.
I wouldn’t pay for 3G on a bet; it’s just like wifi, only slower and more expensive!

  13. cgp says:

How does 3G on multiple devices (for one person) work?
    Shared sim cards??
    MiFi is a necessity.

wrong viewpoint. My position on iPad purchase rationale is make an evaluation of the blossoming app market on this 9.7 inch mobile screen. Go check it out. The point is not I have xyz to do, rather is this a platform on which ‘something is going to happen’.

My reading of that something is a global domination and explosive evolution and participation due to the a unique market capture and its solution (platform and app distribution) to existing problems with Internet connect providers.

  15. cgp says:

Na just a purveyor of the bleeding obvious.

When and if a killer app shows up for the iPad we’ll reconsider. Not till then. But really, our needs are met by our laptops, smart phones, iPods and cameras.

  17. Dallas says:

The question is not whether you will by a tablet some day. The question is whether you will buy a 7″ or a 10″ one.
