Good Morning Viet Nam!!

It looks like the draft is back if the Democrats get their way. Funny that this is not getting any attention.

Bill: To require all persons in the United States between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform national service, either as a member of the uniformed services or in civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, to authorize the induction of persons in the uniformed services during wartime to meet end-strength requirements of the uniformed services, and for other purposes. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

Now what was the reason we elected Obama? Oh, yes, to stop global warming.

  1. Miss_X2 says:

This government doesn’t have enough money to draft everyone between the ages of 18 and 42. But this is a great way to collect DNA samples from the entire 18 to 42 population.

  2. Miss_X2 says:

P.S. This bill is introduced by RANGEL. The very same RANGEL that’s in trouble for corruption, etc.

  3. Hyph3n says:

Rangel has introduced this before to make the point that if we are involved in a war, it should be on the backs of everyone, not just the volunteer army. It’s a far cry from the draft is back.

  4. Cursor_ says:

It will not pass. It will get killed like all measure tendered before.

    Cursor_

  5. Floyd says:

So–this is just Rangel waving the flag so his corruption issues will be ignored.

As a Vietnam era veteran, I really don’t like the possibility of revival of the draft just to help Rangel get re-elected.

  6. Improbus says:

If you can’t get enough volunteers just enslave them under force of law. A big FU to mister Rangel.

  7. SparkyOne says:

    I am getting a fuck’n deferment this time 🙂

  8. Ah_Yea says:

Or maybe it’s fulfilling a campaign promise??

  9. bobbo, the evangelical anti-theist says:

Its actually rather funny. The whole point of a draft is so that America won’t go to WAR unless there is broad public support.

The Congress Creeps want this cover because unless the public is fearful of having their own precious kiddies drafted and sent overseas, then they think anyone voting against a WAR is unpatriotic!

Congress Creeps who could care less about other peoples kiddies and who know they can get their own kiddies a deferment or a gig in the National Guard ((proud chicken hawks know who I am talking about if they aren’t coked up)) want the draft so they can vote against the WAR for balanced budgeted purposes and not suffer the same unthinking Patriotic backlash.

American Politics. You gotta love the dishonesty from all quarters.

  10. swat45 says:

I did 23+ years…..they let me sky dive for free, shoot all kinds of neat weapons, sleep out with all the other kids etc, etc, etc.

But I’m 65 now and thanks to all you taxpayers for sending me a check each month.

Screw Rangel (for that matter screw all the elitest shitheads in the the congress and senate) Oh hell screw all polititions!!!!!!!!

Feels good to get that off my chest.

  11. swat45 says:

BTW I think it would be a good idea if all young people did some service (at least basic training) They might learn some manners and responsibilities. Responsibilies are the things (they never talk about) that balance all those “RIGHTS” that people claim.

Don’t need the draft back where your puffed up shithead neighbors on the draft board picked you because you were poor etc.

  12. Dave says:

    This is a good idea.

Surely, it’ll make any war (or continuation of an existing war) much more significant.

Maybe people won’t be so willing to send others to die (or kill) in their name.

  13. brm says:

    obviously a quid-pro-quo

“Hey Charlie, you can either go to trial or we’ll cut you a deal in exchange for introducing this bill with your name on it. We don’t want it traced back to us.”

This is also obviously a sign that we’re about to invade Iran. Or North Korea. Or both.

  14. swat45 says:

    Another thought:

If they are say, between 18 and 40, put them in the service and let them earn their handouts

  15. brm says:

I love how everyone swallows the “they’d never re-introduce the draft!” meme.

That line of bullshit is just to keep us from taking bills like this seriously. As far as I’m concerned, if someone is writing up a bill, they’re willing to make it law.

  16. ScotterOtter says:

If war is ever declared, two things should automatically happen. First, an automatic tax to pay for that war so every citizen feels the burden. Second, children (of military age) of those who voted to declare war should automatically be drafted. This would ensure that no person would vote for a war that they aren’t willing to sacrifice their own child for.

  17. swat45 says:

    Left out part….OLD AGE?

    Another thought:

If they are say, between 18 and 40, AND ON WELFARE, put them in the service and let them earn their handouts

  18. P89 says:

I have an eighteen year old kid. I have no problem with a draft. I love my kid, and he should serve his country.

  19. brm says:

    #18:

I hope they draft you first.

  20. Breetai says:

Just more Left Right Paradigm BS. The Dems throw the election so we can have another throw the bums out election cycle so the slaves get to feel like they’re in charge while the banks/corporations use the government as a legislative vending machine.

  21. Hyph3n says:

brm said “That line of bullshit is just to keep us from taking bills like this seriously. As far as I’m concerned, if someone is writing up a bill, they’re willing to make it law.”

Naivety like that keeps Washington humming. If I remember my High School civics, anyone can introduced a bill. And if you dig deep enough, lots of screwy bills that die in committee. There’s a thousand reasons Rangel may be introducing this- from altruistic to screwing the Dems for coming after him.

  22. brm says:

    #21

I understand that there are reasons to introduce a bill other than the face-value one of “to pass it.”

“And if you dig deep enough, lots of screwy bills that die in committee.”

And there are lots of screwy bills that pass.

That’s the problem – it’s hard to detect a pattern of what passes and what doesn’t.

“Naivety like that keeps Washington humming.”

I could just as easily call you naive for not considering the strategy of: introduce a bunch of wacky bills that don’t pass to desensitize the public to wacky bills, then slipping in the one wacky bill that WILL pass now that the public is ignoring all wacky bills.

  23. coolismo says:

good heads up jd, once again…funny conjunction this week of wikileaks and hyper militarisation via this and other stories. the MILITARY arm of the military/industrial complex has a complex agenda…maybe revealed on the next noagenda? great flag…coolismo

  24. bobbo, the evangelical anti-theist says:

brm==Rangle has been introducing this same bill since at least 2003 according to my quick google. His rational is self evident: to make military service more equitable and to make WAR less invisible to the American Public.

It doesn’t pass not because it is wacky, because it is very well founded for its stated purposes, but because in general the American Public only wants “somebody else” to fight their wars – not their very own kiddies. This hypocrisy is very much reflected in our Congresses duplicity and ineffectiveness.

We just can’t be honest with ourselves.

  25. Grandpa says:

Doesn’t matter if Obama institutes the draft. It will never happen because Obama is a lame duck president. In two years we will vote the idiots who did this to us back in office, the Republicans. We will vote them back in because Obama will legalize 18 million law breakers with executive order after the mid term elections.

Then the Republicans will kill Obamacare, Social Security and medicare like they have always wanted ( and give themselves a great big tax cut as a reward. )

  26. soundwash says:

hasnt rangal submitted variations on this bill like 3 times now? in which case, i dust off my well beaten horse: “psst..its a distraction.”

    -don’t tell anyone

sure..it’d be a great idea..then maybe 90% of the population might actually have a CLUE, -about anything. however in light of the perpetual (scripted) war machine, and a corrupt to the gills CONgress / Planet the past few decades/centuries..

    um NO.

besides, do you really want someone who is not there of their own free will watching your back??

    -s

  27. Grandpa says:

Oh, I was drafted to serve in Vietnam. Strange how prisoners can’t do labor because it’s cruel and unjust but draftees can do anything for two years. I never felt like I was serving my country while stationed in some other country. Still don’t.

Is Wiki leaks the new Pentagon Papers?

  28. Hyph3n says:

brm said “I could just as easily call you naive…”

And if it makes you feel better, go ahead. And if this bill comes anywhere close to passing, I will buy you a beer.

But really folks. This is one Senator introducing one bill. To say that “the draft is back if the Democrats get their way” is little Glenn Beckish. File this one next to Ron Paul’s annual “Kill the Fed” bill that will also never pass.

  29. chuck says:

I’d support a draft, if (and only if) it included a provision requiring that the draft will only be called if an actual declaration of war by Congress against a specific country (or group of countries) has been made.

“Global War on Terror” is not specific. Neither is “Al-Qaeda”, which, apparently, means anyone, anywhere.

And it’s not enough for Congress to just authorize “use of force” or something vague about supporting a UN resolution.

  30. brian t says:

The definition of civilian service in the bill seems to be quite loose. It includes “homeland security” i.e. they also serve who sit behind the X-ray scanner at Newark, New Jersey.
