USA TODAY

Talk about beefy: Three meat patties, three slices of cheese.

The fast-food world has proof positive that size matters: a foot-long cheeseburger.

A cheeseburger sold as a foot-long sandwich, with three burgers and three cheese slices, is being tested at 50 Carl’s Jr. restaurants in Southern California and 50 Hardee’s units in Indiana. That’s the same chain that introduced the world to the 1,400-calorie Monster Burger and the Monster Breakfast Sandwich, with 47 grams of fat.

The move comes at a time fast-food chains are focused on concocting more items intriguingly low in price but large in size. This summer, there’s serious foot-long-on-the-cheap mania.

The Carl’s foot-long fetches $4 without lettuce and tomatoes, $4.50 with.

Holy Moses!

So it costs more to have healthier ingredients? Gee you’d think the government would subsidized healthier foods. Rather than Corn for HFCS.

    Ummmm. I’ll take two more.

    Damn that looks good.

I do like my burgers and steaks, but am I the only one who finds that kind of…. well disgusting.

  5. me says:

    @ #1 Fragalot.

Yea isnt it funny, that food in its original unadulterated form, without pesticides or chemical et etc cost more than adulterated/processed foods.

Interesting yet funny times we are living in.

  6. hale-bopp says:

I enjoy a good burger every now and then…emphasis on “A” good burger, as in one, singular.

  7. Animby says:

“850 calories with 20 grams of saturated fat. It’s served on a white sub roll, sliced in half and wrapped in butcher paper.”

That’s not so bad. And active guy’s gonna need 2500-3000 cal per day. I went swimming this morning and played some football (okay – soccer) this afternoon. So I could afford the sandwich. Of course, if I added french fries and a fruit pie and an oil tanker of soda, then I’d better drop that lemon meringue pie I was gonna have for dessert tonight.

The main point is: food, even large food, is not inherently bad for you. Eat a couple of these every day and I’ll see you in the intensive care unit. But once in a while it can fit into a healthy lifestyle. One thing: cough up the extra half a buck for some salad on the durned thing!

  8. Awake says:

If corporations are so blatantly, openly and visibly disregarding the damage to the health that they are doing to their clients by selling anything that will increase earnings, do you even want to think about what they are doing that we can not see?

What are the ‘real’ ingredients of this mess? How ‘plastic’ is this food really?

People do not need protection from themselves, but they do need protection from companies that sell junk like this. At least it should be required to carry labels similar to cigarette packages.

  9. Benjamin says:

#7 Animby said, “The main point is: food, even large food, is not inherently bad for you. Eat a couple of these every day and I’ll see you in the intensive care unit.”

Good point If I eat something heavy like this in one meal, then the other meals that day are a lot lighter. I’m not going to worry about overeating these because the nearest Hardees/Carl’s Jr is 35 miles away and I only find a reason to go to that city is every month or so. I only eat there half the time I am in that city though.

Besides, according to Subway, sandwiches shaped like that are better for you than round sandwiches. Personally, I’d rather have the three pieces of meat stacked on a regular bun.

  10. Guyver says:

    8, Awake,

If corporations are so blatantly, openly and visibly disregarding the damage to the health that they are doing to their clients by selling anything that will increase earnings, do you even want to think about what they are doing that we can not see?

That’s Liberal speak for people are not responsible for their own decisions.

What is blatant, is those corporations are trying to see if there is a demand for such an item. If there is, they will continue to sell it so long as people WANT it. Soy burgers are not something most people crave.

People do not need protection from themselves, but they do need protection from companies that sell junk like this.

Ah, but you just implied it a moment ago. Regardless if you feel you need protection because you’re either misinformed or can’t make your own decision without government help, then follow what consumer advocacy groups say.

BTW, this may be a shocker for you, but some people do not want protection from what you deem to be bad. It’s a personal choice until Liberals decide to outlaw that as well. With “free” universal health care on the horizon, I wouldn’t be surprised that the Liberals may introduce legislation to abridge people’s right to choose for the “greater good” of “free” health care.

  11. Guyver says:

    7, Animby / 9, Benjamin,

There was a study done a while back on “family style” restaurants like Applebee’s versus places like McDonald’s.

Most people go into a family-style restaurant thinking they’re eating healthier. However it was found out you’ll consume more calories, fat, etc. eating at a family-style restaurant than eating a value meal from McDonald’s….. maybe even if you super-sized the value meal as well.

  12. spsffan says:

If you want three cheeseburgers, why not just buy three cheeseburgers. They would certainly be easier to eat than this monster!

I’m starting to like these outrageous calorie jamborees though. The more people that eat them, the more people who will die young, having paid into Social Security, etc. but not living long enough to collect. If they are inclined to eat stuff like this to begin with, they are too stupid to care about, so let them do it.

So people like to fuck, some like to gamble, some like to play video games. Others do other things to relax.
So who is to judge what anyone enjoys as long as it does not hurt anyone else.
Michele Obama, We know you want this 12″ of pleasure. Ever notice her resemblance, pigmentation aside, to Ms. Piggie?

  14. Fat Bastard says:

Can I supersize that for another 50cents?

  15. deowll says:

  16. Guyver says:

    1860 Navy,

So who is to judge what anyone enjoys as long as it does not hurt anyone else.

When you have a society running off of government entitlements (i.e. “free” universal health care), Liberals will feel it is their business to know your business. You will have liberals whining about how you’re not an island and are costing all tax payers more money in “free” health care.

And if you choose poorly, it’s not really your fault anyways. You can’t be responsible for consuming goods / services you wanted anyways. Therefore the Liberals will argue the root cause of the problem are the corporations because as we all know in a free market, corporations make a profit off of selling consumers goods and services that they want.

That’s why liberals judge and want to be in your business (and wallet).

I don’t care. I eat out about once or twice a week because I am cheap. When I eat out I want a big meal like Applebees and Carl Jr’s. At Applebees, I bring home the other half of my meal to eat for lunch the next day at work. If restaurants are forced to serve only healthy food, then I will not eat out at all.

I eat pretty healthy at home, but I don’t want
government deciding that I am too dumb to order my own food.

You’re preaching to the choir. My only point is that the liberals here want to bash fast food restaurants over calories / fat for food only served at a fast food restaurant. If that was the true concern, the other restaurants would also be in the limelight… but they’re not.

As for me, you and I are on the same sheet of music.

  19. bobbo, student of the haiku says:

What a bunch of dumb shits congratulating themselves over how pround/manly they are to be stupid tubs of sh*t.

The OP is about a triple burger being offered to the public (hard to believe it is only 850 calories==not even “that bad” on its own for an entire meal).

Somehow, the discussion switches over to a tangential and tired rant of not having the government control what you do. Are you guys RETARDED OR WHAT???????

Analogy: a report on the wear pattern of radial tires vs bias ply. YOUR RESPONSE: The gubment ain’t gonna tell me how fast to drive==or take my guns away either!!!!

The government SHOULD REQUIRE the nutritional elements to be easily available and posted AND probably OUTLAW this crap being sold in school lunches. Individually, yes, you’all are singing off the same sheet of music, off tune, wrong song, and you’re full of it.

Surely there’s a better reason why Liberals want to be in everyone else’s business? If it’s not because of entitlement programs, then why do you feel it is your business to know what others eat?

The government SHOULD REQUIRE the nutritional elements to be easily available and posted AND probably OUTLAW this crap being sold in school lunches.

I have no problems with getting this out of school lunch programs. But a Liberal telling me what I can / cannot eat is none of their business.

Analogy: a report on the wear pattern of radial tires vs bias ply. YOUR RESPONSE: The gubment ain’t gonna tell me how fast to drive==or take my guns away either!!!!

Stupid analogy because the public roads are for the general welfare for all. Speeding on roads not designed for those speeds puts others at risk for your own stupidity.

Your analogy makes much more sense if you’re using “free” health care as an analogy of the road everyone drives on….. which only proves the prior point of why you liberals are in everyone else’s business.

  21. Spiffy Jim says:

The local pizza shop in my little town near Philly sold these things as “cheeseburger subs” 30 years ago… the memory is making me awfully hungry.

  22. Guyver says:

Only a Liberal idiot would need a nutritional label to tell him that eating this is probably not good for them: http://tinyurl.com/23nnx4b

Intelligent people eating unhealthy stuff for enjoyment know what they’re ingesting. They don’t need a label to tell them what they already know. For some insane reason, Liberals get upset that SOME people may care to enjoy eating a high calorie high fat meal from time to time and blame evil corporate America for pulling eyes over people.

I suppose in Bobbo’s world we’d all be forced to be vegans (so that “free” health care costs and “man-made” global warming can be minimized).

  23. Colorado says:

Carl’s Jr. is assuming their customers are idiots. Not food idiots, economic idiots. Where else can you get 3 hamburgers for $4 bucks? There was a sub shop near the high school here that had a similar loaded sandwich for $6.50 and when you bought it you got a large drink for free. The guys would buy one of those for lunch and split it. Coke and a sandwich for $3.25 – the shop is now out of business.

  24. Awake says:

    #23 Guyver

“Intelligent people eating unhealthy stuff for enjoyment…”

Huh? That really makes no sense whatsoever.

Surely there’s a better reason why Liberals want to be in everyone else’s business? If it’s not because of entitlement programs, then why do you feel it is your business to know what others eat? ///// ONCE AGAIN–OR DO YOU EVER, ACTUALLY RESPOND TO WHAT IS CLEARLY SAID? I DON’T CARE, THE GOV DOESN’T CARE, LIBS DON’T CARE WHAT YOU CHOOSE TO EAT. BUT WHEN I BUY, WHEN ANY INTELLIGENT PERSON BUYS FOOD, WHAT THE OP IS ACTUALLY ABOUT IS, WE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT IT IS WE ARE EATING. ITS WHAT FOOD LABELS ARE ALL ABOUT. YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS TWICE NOW YET YOU CONTINUE TO SWITCH THE SUBJECT. IS THIS UNCONSCIOUS ON YOUR PART?????

2== The government SHOULD REQUIRE the nutritional elements to be easily available and posted AND probably OUTLAW this crap being sold in school lunches.

I have no problems with getting this out of school lunch programs. But a Liberal telling me what I can / cannot eat is none of their business. ///// I AGREE AND NO ONE ON THIS THREAD HAS TRIED TO MAKE IT THEIR BUSINESS.

3== Analogy: a report on the wear pattern of radial tires vs bias ply. YOUR RESPONSE: The gubment ain’t gonna tell me how fast to drive==or take my guns away either!!!!

Stupid analogy because the public roads are for the general welfare for all. ///// SO ARE FOOD LABELS. THE ANALOGY FITS VERY WELL, ESPECIALLY GIVEN THIS RESPONSE.

4==Speeding on roads not designed for those speeds puts others at risk for your own stupidity. /// WELL, I’M GLAD YOU DON’T THINK THE GOVERNMENT HAS NO RIGHT TO POST SPEED LIMITS. NOW, WHAT ABOUT THE “DANGER” TO YOURSELF? DO YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW MUCH FAT IS IN ONE MEAL VS ANOTHER? MERCURY??? PRESERVATIVES??? MODIFIED GENOMES??? RADIATION???? ITS ALL FOOD LABELING.

5==Your analogy makes much more sense if you’re using “free” health care as an analogy of the road everyone drives on….. which only proves the prior point of why you liberals are in everyone else’s business. /// YEA, EXCEPT WE LIBERALS AREN’T EXCEPT IN THE CHICKEN LITTLE FANTASIES OF MADE UP SHIT FROM FANTACISTS LIKE YOU==OR ATLEAST THIS AND A FEW OTHER RECENT POSTS.

YOU REALLY NEED TO LEARN TO READ. NOT TRYING TO BE INSULTING/TROLL AS I OFTEN DO. SERIOUSLY==YOU ARE TWISTING THINGS INTO WHAT THEY CLEARLY ARE NOT. NOT A HEALTHY OUTLOOK, AND IT MAKES YOU FUNCTIONALLY DISHONEST.

  26. Floyd says:

    Listen people.

Carl’s Jr sells truly high quality hamburgers; I’ve bought a few.

The three burger sub is a gimmick. Most people with an ounce of intelligence will divide the sub into two or three sandwiches, to be eaten by the purchaser and their family.

A person who wants to eat the burger sub all by himself has the right to do so, but it’s a dumb move.

I have no idea what the lunatic Republican fringe intends to do by somehow connecting Obama to the three burger sub.

  27. Animby says:

    Okay, okay, okay.
I’m convinced. I was wrong. That much meat on a long bun with cheese and no salad is obviously bad for me.

I think I’ll go get a nice healthy Philly Cheesesteak instead.

  28. bobbo, student of the haiku says:

Guyver===maintaining your “point of view” quite ardently. So am I.

I could pick thru to find the slim areas of agreement – or – pick the most egregious of your continuing word associations.

“Your lack of precision troubles me.” and already our little dispute has Animby switching over to Philly Cheesesteaks. Is more bad in smaller portions better or worse than less bad in bigger portions? I think the latter but there are other variables.

“You Know” as I look back on my life, I recall some of the “mistakes” I made. I’ve often wished those around me had voiced caution or a different point of view to consider. We learn by disagreeing with those around us just as well as when changing our minds and going in a new direction.

That opportunity, to evaluate our position, is before us both. Not right now, but maybe later, I will learn something from this exchange. For now, I’ll be happy with a cheeseburger.

  29. Gildersleeve says:
