Raoul Moat

Cnet News

Raoul Moat used to be the doorman at a nightclub and became famous in the U.K. during the past two weeks because he shot and wounded his ex-girlfriend, shot and killed her new boyfriend, and shot and blinded a policeman.

He then went on the run before, apparently, shooting himself during a stand-off with the police.

His case has aroused many strong feelings in the U.K., many critical, some sympathetic. After his death, a Facebook group was created called “R.I.P. Raoul Moat You Legend!” This quickly attracted more than 36,000 fans, although not all can be said to be entirely sympathetic toward Moat.

Still, given that British Prime Minster, David Cameron declared: “I cannot understand any wave, however small, of public sympathy for this man. There should be sympathy for his victims and the havoc he wreaked in that community. There should be no sympathy for him,” some members of the British Parliament are suggesting that Facebook should remove the Moat fan page.

People are really weird.

I can’t believe there is still any freedom of speech in the UK anymore. They MUST take down the page, I DEMAND it!!

  2. Wedgy says:

Well this whole situation seems to have been made worse by the police, who may have made him shoot himself while holding a gun to his head by tazering him.

  3. Milo says:

Just put something nasty about Mohammed up, that’ll have it shut down in minutes!

  4. aslightlycrankygeek says:

I completely support their right to keep this page up, and I hope they don’t take it down under pressure. Still, it is a really sad state our culture is in where people have more appreciation for the murderer than the victim. I feel like I understand most facets of liberalism, but not that part.

  5. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

Facebook is a socially irresponsible company, as demonstrated here once again. There’s no defense of this page, IMO they should make the call to delete it.

    #3 Milo, I agree.

  6. sargasso_c says:

It was too hard to be the hard man.

  7. Dallas says:

I say leave it. People associated with this page is public information. Good luck getting that next job.

  8. interglacial says:

    The page has already gone.
News media here is gleefully reporting that the page owner took it down – no mention of if authorities directly got to him.

The way Moat died reminded me of a case where someone doused themselves with lighter fuel and was threatening to set themselves alight. Tazed by police – burst into flames.

  9. morramm says:

Glad I wasn’t Moat’s girl, what a sordid affair that must of been

    For all the Moats
don’t make threats you’ll regret keeping

  10. NelsonOH says:

They should outlaw guns in Great Britain! Oops, I forgot. They already Are illegal. See how well that works? Perhaps crime should be outlawed.

Perhaps, but how can we know what happened. I also read that “…Raoul Moat asked for psychiatric help months before his shooting spree, according to recorded conversations with social workers that were broadcast today…” (Guardian) and his family were turned away by negotiators. Regardless he is a f-ed up murderer and is probably better off dead.

P.S. He made a statement to the public that they need not fear him and then ‘officials’ said he had changed his mind. I think they were lying and had planned to kill him for murdering the cop. If that is true then it was a premeditated state assassination which is obviously concerning.

its been in my experience that stories are almost never clean cut black and white.
