Lime Wire founder Mark Gorton during the past decade made millions of dollars helping people share billions of pirated songs. Now, the big record labels claim in legal filings that Gorton has maneuvered to prevent the court from seizing his gains.

In court papers last week, the Recording Industry Association of America once again asked the court to freeze Lime Wire’s and Gorton’s assets. The trade group for the four largest record companies alleged in a copyright complaint filed in 2006 that Gorton had for five years placed his assets in a trust that he, his wife, and two children control in an attempt to put the money out of reach of any court.

Um, I just assumed they had taken steps to avoid being left destitute using any means practical. I would also assume that more than one such account exists but then I don’t really care.

  2. ECA says:

    Im sorry..
I DONT WANT/USE/SUGGEST Lime wire to anyone.

But, I cant see the RIAA ascertain.
its a TORRENT BASED transfer program. There GENERALLY isnt any money given to anyone.
Even if the program Displayed ADVERTS while it was doing its sharing..There is no money being used.

    oK,
I think I get it..the program had PAY FOR FEATURES?? ok, is that like the volume knob on the radio? Without THAT 1 feature the radio would be to LOUD or to SOFT..

  3. FRAGaLOT says:

Limewire is based on the gnutila2 network, that damn all other P2P clients use ever since Naspter died off (bear share, Sharezilla, etc..) While Limewire does have Bit Torrent support, it’s NOT BASED ON BIT TORRENT. The point is that the files shared on Limewire aren’t exclusive to just people using LimeWire, there are tons of other apps that do the same thing limewire does, and under different OSes.

The reason Lime Wire makes money is people are stupid enough to PAY for a “Pro” version of the software with promise of faster speeds, and more search results, bla bla bla.

IF any applications shows adverts, means they are getting paid to have those adverts in it. Money IS INVOLVED when you talk about ads, even if it “free” to the end user.

ECA please stop talking out of your ass about subjects you know very little about.. thanks.

  4. KMFIX says:

Why hasn’t Google been dragged into court for helping people find/pirate music?

  5. deowll says:

#4 It most likely has however as long as it’s clear that such things just happen and are incidental to what the company is trying to do then they won’t win.

  6. FRAGaLOT says:

#4 Gnutila2 clients (Limewire) have their own search engines in the software. You don’t use goggle to search for stuff when you’re using something like limewire, UNLIKE Torrents where you do need to use a web search to find it.

  7. chris says:

These guys are complete scumbags. When a friend comes to me and asks for help with a computer that boots into the operating system but becomes completely unresponsive I immediately think limewire.

  8. Nobody says:

Heh, this reminds me of someone else with a trust fund, to shield their cash on hand from any lawsuits…

    BP?

    LOL

  9. bobbo, cam we spot the relevant issue says:

Seems to me it is: should a properly formed and operated trust that by law is immune from seizure for civil awards be pierced===even though the original and only purpose for such trusts is the avoidance/minimization of taxes and the avoidance of seizures for civil awards?

Yep, just another case of the super rich trying to get the assets of the merely rich.

Trusts are BS to begin with, RIAA is BS to begin with, its the battle of the BS.

    Choose your BS.

  10. ECA says:

    #3,
Ad’s are not considered in the Value of the Data being shared.
They can only contest the sharing of the RIAA controlled media.

    #4
Google does not transfer information, they ONLY locate the shared file. If you have torrent, you can get the Torrent file..

    #7..
DITTO.. I have warned many about the problems, and Warned PARENTS about them also.

    #9
    very true.
    want more news..
    RIAA
    MPAA
    ASCAP
    ACTA

There are some BIG debates coming out about Copyrights and INFRINGEMENT and how advancement gets hindered.
    Techdirt follows much of it..

  11. Milo says:

    Agreed ECA.

Plus, how much of a song is original work? Aside from sampling, and outright plagiarism, what about musical notes and notation, equal temperament, principles of harmonics etc.
Why should something so obviously unoriginal be treated as if it is?

  12. Oracle says:

Good idea. A trust. Like OJ has income that nobody can touch….smart.

  13. Chris Mac says:

You all look so cute 😉

  14. The0ne says:

I found lime wire one the best programs ever…for the unknowing to download viruses, spams, junk software, etc. Thumbs up for acing those particular area!

  15. ECA says:

    #14..
    DITTO.

And if we could PROVE it was the corps sedding the program…we would have a LAWSUIT.

  16. Freeto says:

The RIAA hates it when their target’s lawyers outsmart their own lawyers. If you have money you need to consult with lawyers to protect yourself from other lawyers who will try to take it.
