Do we actually pay for this expertise?

In a stunningly ignorant rant about Arizona’s Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act (SB1070), Peggy West, a county supervisor from Milwaukee WI, states in part ” If this were Texas a state that borders Mexico I would have to look twice at this, but it’s Arizona, a state that is a ways removed from the border…” What adds insult to the injury of her stupidity is that she had listed one of her interests as Mexican history on her FaceBook page. The interest has since been removed.

Geography has always been a reliable source for this sort of entertaining mistake. Remember when Miss South Carolina was asked why most Americans couldn’t locate the U.S. on a map? She said we needed more maps, before she started repeating “such as like such as like such as” and had to be rebooted. But maybe we do need more maps. The sad fact is that most Americans actually don’t know where most things are.

This woman is a Democrat? Her party must be so proud.

Supervisor West was named the 2004 Hispanic Woman of the Year by UMOS, Inc. A committed believer in community service, Supervisor West volunteers for UMOS, Inc. and Mexican Fiesta and serves as a mentor at Notre Dame Middle School.

[Guess that doesn’t require she knows where Mexico is].

Here’s a fine letter from Jon Kyl, United States Senator — Dear Supervisor West,

  1. BubbaRay says:

2004 Hispanic Woman of the Year? That’s just great. I’m sure Wisconsin is proud.

  2. bobbo, context is often the message received says:

Your para 1 and 3 are the same.

I’ve heard it told that many students think Alaska is an island because it often appears in a circle right next to Hawaii.

[Ed. I hate cut and paste when it works like that! Thanks.]

  3. GRtak says:

I think she does need a map, and a history book or few.

  4. DavidtheDuke says:

What about 2010 white guy of the year? People who usually accept awards like that actually don’t deserve it simply based on the divisive idea of the award itself.

  5. McCullough says:

Incredible and scary….I think she is a ways removed from intelligence.

  6. AlienProbe says:

    Where Is Wisconsin??

I’m curious to know if even one Texas redneck knows where Wisconsin is located.

  7. McCullough says:

Maybe if Wisconsin bordered a furrin country she’d be more sympathetic……

    he he.

  8. KD Martin says:

#6, Yes, I know exactly where Wisconsin is, I’ve flown the Cessna 310 to Madison several times. I was the Corp. Secretary for a grocery store chain there. Even BubbaRay knows where Wisconsin is, he’s flown there too for a solar eclipse.

  9. tbeale says:

Pffft! Wisconsin…home of Fried Cheese Curd.

  10. Dirk Thundernuts says:

I think you misspelled Piggy’s name too.

  11. jbellies says:

In Mexico (but not in Spain), AS and AZ sound the same.

Of course, American Samoa is out there. AS is ace in Spanish. Quadrapedal ass is asno. Where’s my Miss America prize? Which planet was that?

Ever notice that on Millionaire, there were not many geography questions, particularly not world geography? Regis didn’t want too much embarrassment.

  12. Improbus says:

I should run for office. The standards are mighty low.

  13. jccalhoun says:

where’s the evidence this actually happened?

[Ed. Did you read the letter from the Senator?]

  14. Gazbo says:

As a democrat, I can tell you she knows exactly where Mexico is – she just doesn’t know where Arizona is.

  15. deowll says:

#14 Now that is a profound observation.

  16. Faxon says:

This dumbshit Mexican probably went to the same college as the South Carolina Congressman fool who was concerned Guam would “tip over” if too many supplies were unloaded there for the military.

  17. Animby says:

Why haven’t I heard of anyone suggesting a boycott against Nebraska?

  18. Scooter says:

jccalhoun “where’s the evidence this actually happened?”

    Look on youtube.

  19. Uncle Dave says:

I spent the first 29 years of my life in and around Milwaukee. My mother spent many years on her suburb’s school board and watched as the level of education deteriorated. And her district, where I got my education before the liberal education wackos took over, was better than in the city. So this woman’s lack of basic knowledge is not surprising.

And besides, if one things has become clear over the last few decades, intelligence is not a requirement for public office.

  20. jccalhoun says:

    Scooter said,

jccalhoun “where’s the evidence this actually happened?”

    Look on youtube.

I was kind of hoping that the people that post these stories might actually go to the effort to actually post it themselves instead of posting a letter which doesn’t prove anything.

[Ed. Click here, unless that’s too much trouble and you won’t take a Senator’s word for it.]

  21. chuck says:

    maps.google.com

  22. Awake says:

Quick… without looking… does Idaho border Canada?

  23. Animby says:

#22 Awake – what difference does it make. If I was going to damn Idaho for their geographic location, I’d go look at a map first.

  24. moshguy says:

    *FACEPALM!*

  25. sargasso_c says:

For confused foreigners, Americans are very interested in Mexico, especially how long it would take them to get there if they needed to in a hurry.

  26. angry says:

    Supervisor? More like Stupor-vior! HAR!

  27. angry says:

#26 Oops…too much tequila with Peggy West as she was working south of my border. Mucha calliente!

    I meant “Stupor-visor”.

  28. brm says:

    #22:

yes, it does. and I’m not even an elected official!

  29. Anonymous says:

    #16

    This dumbshit Mexican…

Hey, I didn’t know racism and casual racial slurs were encouraged on this blog. Great!

This place is just like /b/ on 4chan, except stupider.

  30. jccalhoun says:

[Ed. Click here, unless that’s too much trouble and you won’t take a Senator’s word for it.]
The editor must be dense. I wrote “I was kind of hoping that the people that post these stories might actually go to the effort to actually post it themselves instead of posting a letter which doesn’t prove anything.” and in response he posts a link to that letter again.

A letter which starts with, “I understand you said…” which indicates that the all mighty senator isn’t himself 100% certain that it happened. So again, “where’s the evidence this actually happened?”
