Do we actually pay for this expertise?
In a stunningly ignorant rant about Arizona’s Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act (SB1070), Peggy West, a county supervisor from Milwaukee WI, states in part ” If this were Texas a state that borders Mexico I would have to look twice at this, but it’s Arizona, a state that is a ways removed from the border…” What adds insult to the injury of her stupidity is that she had listed one of her interests as Mexican history on her FaceBook page. The interest has since been removed.
Geography has always been a reliable source for this sort of entertaining mistake. Remember when Miss South Carolina was asked why most Americans couldn’t locate the U.S. on a map? She said we needed more maps, before she started repeating “such as like such as like such as” and had to be rebooted. But maybe we do need more maps. The sad fact is that most Americans actually don’t know where most things are.
This woman is a Democrat? Her party must be so proud.
Supervisor West was named the 2004 Hispanic Woman of the Year by UMOS, Inc. A committed believer in community service, Supervisor West volunteers for UMOS, Inc. and Mexican Fiesta and serves as a mentor at Notre Dame Middle School.

The editor must be dense. I wrote “I was kind of hoping that the people that post these stories might actually go to the effort to actually post it themselves instead of posting a letter which doesn’t prove anything.” and in response he posts a link to that letter again.
A letter which starts with, “I understand you said…” which indicates that the all mighty senator isn’t himself 100% certain that it happened. So again, “where’s the evidence this actually happened?”
Just look it up on YouTube, you friggin’ douchebag….If someone dropped a 50-dollar bill in front of you, would you refuse to pick it up because they failed to place it directly into your hand?….Who gives a sh*t what some letter said?….Go see the video for yourself, or would you rather someone type the url in for you?

I’m finding fascinating that no one has picked up on another gem in her statement – namely, opinion that distance to Mexico measured in state lines somehow changes how this law should be viewed.
Not only MORE maps. But cheaper ones too. Some of these retail “Street” maps, cost more that dictionaries and romance novels. They get most of their data from government records. So it’s not like they go around confirming that all the streets connect (or don’t). Or creating it from scratch. So what’s with the hard cover prices for soft cover maps? And these things ought to really be on $1 computer CDs, by now. Some day there’ll be a Map App (iPhone & iPad) that’s way cheaper than the printed versions.
BTW. what’s that Peggy West is posing in front of? The City of Domes?! I always thought “Logan’s Run” took place a lot closer to Washington DC, than Milwaukee!
And also BTW. There is this line in National Lampoon’s “Deteriorata” that says, “…and reflect that whatever misfortune may be your lot

Strangely enough, a lot of that movie was shot in Ft. Worth, TX, especially the Water Gardens. The film crew sure made a mess of traffic.

So it is too much to ask that the people posting stories on this blog actually do the work and provide some evidence that the stories they are posting are true? As a reader I’m supposed to do the work for them? They are the ones claiming it is true so it is their job to prove it is true. Is that too much to ask? Is it too much to ask that we are shown the actual clip before talking about it? If wanting the editors to post the url to the video instead of making me take the time to search for it makes me a douchebag then I guess that’s what I am. At least I don’t go in and edit posts asking “did you read the letter?” over and over like the editor did.

#49 jccalhoun: If we DU editors were professional journalists, paid for our work, with nothing else to do but spend hours and days researching each and every item before posting, generating countless links to corroborating material, I would agree with you. But we are volunteers with real jobs (a few are retired) who prefer to allow our readers to do additional research as they wish. We find interesting things (to us) and post them in the hopes of stimulating the brain cells in our readers. Sorry you don’t wish to exercise yours.
I think there’s a difference between promoting thought about the issue itself and thought about whether or not the story is real.
It isn’t a big deal. I’m just responding to people calling me a douchebag for asking for proof and an editor asking “did you read the letter?” as if being a senator granted someone infallibility or something.
Americans are terrible at geography, I mean really really horrible.
But how bad is that compare to cherry picking so called “news” and “journalism”? Now that’s something worth thinking about!

Don’t come here to find facts. Come here to relieve some stress and laugh at the arrogance and ignorance of it’s members, myself included. This is a blog, cherry picked threads for members to argue about. I wouldn’t get too upset about it if you just make sure you don’t take it too seriously 🙂
Of course there are those that talk out of their arses without any experience whatsoever. I refer you to Bobbo; intelligent but humongous ego don’t go well together sometimes.
