1. TThor says:

    :-)) very useful!

  2. Benjamin says:

Pretty slow. Speed it up and make it capable of going up and down stairs and then the handicapped won’t need ramps anymore. It will be years before it is commercially able to replace wheelchairs though.

  3. Tippis says:

I still prefer the walking harvester:

(even though it never made it to the market)

  4. bobbo, int'l pastry chef and film critic says:

Yes, two likable stars, great tv credits===crap fest of a movie-unwatchable.

[You’ve finally gone over the edge Bobbo. – ed.]

  5. Improbus says:

This is a much cooler, albeit smaller, “spider” robot:

  6. SparkyOne says:

Me and my fucking walker move faster that that!

  7. joereiter says:

    jon peters will take two

  8. MikeN says:

    Better than the movie version.

  9. MikeN says:

The spider is a fixation of the producer Jon Peters. He was onboard with Superman with Kevin Spacey, and his version had the spider, as did The Sandman.

  10. Buzz says:

This kind of locomotion is MUCH easier with six or eight legs. Faster, too.

  11. Skeptic says:

    Spider Man,
    Spider Man,
    Does whatever a spider can….

  12. hhopper says:

I’d hate to be stuck in traffic riding this thing.

  13. deowll says:

The logger was cool. It can travel over very uneven terrain and it doesn’t mess up said terrain nearly as bad as wheels.

The ant was cool and looked like it could be used to do work but I suspect it would run out of power in minutes. I don’t think it was so much a robot as remote control.

The first machine was pretty crude with better electronics than legs. It might had done better with six legs and a bigger body.

  14. Skeptic says:

Cool… we just had a earthquake. Very rare here.

  15. chuck says:

You could go faster if you just sat on a table and just shifted your weight from side to side.

  16. Somebody says:

    Saw that in Star Wars.

  17. sargasso_c says:

#15. Canada? We just felt that in New Zealand.

  18. Faxon says:

The Army has a gas powered mechanical “mule” that is fantastic.
Oops. Gas powered. Bad bad bad.
Have to wait for a wind powered “mule”.

  19. Skeptic says:

Sargasso, yes Canada. it was a 5.5 and near Ottawa.
    My house was swaying!

  20. dadeo says:

Johnny Quest had one before http://WWW..

  21. sargasso_c says:

#20 Skeptic, Radio NZ National interrupted the 7am news to announce it.

  22. Skeptic says:

sargasso, …cool. It’s the first one I’ve actually experienced. Did you get actually one too, or was it just the NZ National News announcing ours?

  23. chuck says:

Re: earthquake in Ontario – just in time for the G20 summit. Who’s controlling the earthquake machine?

  24. Father says:

Crabs, spiders (same thing), and insects are all inefficient land walkers as their size increases.

If I was going to make a walker, I’d start with a dinosaur as a model. A machine that stands above its feet doesn’t spend as much energy holding itself up off the deck. That kind of machine can be lighter and more efficient.

I’d guess people like making creapy looking machines. The RC bug above is cool, but a slow walker.
